Well about time to get a painting blog rolling again I think, one to stick with rather than half start though.
Had these daemons sitting around a bit and seeing the new thousand sons stuff, and looking back at the Slaanesh daemons I did ages ago, I got the urge to finally get to working on them.

This is how they are at the moment.

Still have 10 horrors and 3 flamers to build. I want to get more of pretty much everything here, but really hoping that new magnus kit can be made into a nicer lord of change to lead these guys cause the current is a bit small. Not to mention the amount of times I somehow glued my fingers together building it only to have that back tabbard part fall off or not cooperate with the leg placement... which feels a bit off anyway but it's how it fit together.

Anyway at first I was building these solely for AoS, however I took them all off their 32mm bases and back to the 25mms they come with because I'm going to be building for both at the same time.

Going with something different for me so this entire thing will be a learning experience for me.

And that's that I'll be working from a white prime and letting it show through is intentional cause I'll be trying to use what I know of OSL a bit to try to make all the daemons kind of glow. They're Tzeentch daemons after all so why shouldn't they look more like they're formed of energy. Mortals like any Thousand Sons though, will be painted more normally of course. Have ideas to reuse from the daemons of Slaanesh of course like the whole daemonic rune thing. But with a lot more blue/purple.

Might even get around to making them a new "skyshield landing pad" since I don't know where it is anymore.

Glowing daemons will be pretty cool. Going to paint blues and purples over that pink I presume?

Thanks

Just finished the first horror and I'm not too sure of it so far.

Thinking it might look better in a group than individual, possibly more if I vary the mix of colours between them I guess.

A thought I've had is probably going with silver instead of gold. Silver is more neutral so I think it'd have a nicer contrast with the randomness of the colors since gold is feeling like it's a bit much.

I like it! The pink flesh has some great definition. I think the gold works well.

Well they're kind of quick to paint like this.
Not done yet, still need to clean them up a bit and fix up the bases so they're nice and dark to contrast it. I have considered giving the bases a little glow from the daemons, but at the same time not having it there kind of makes them feel a bit less natural as well.

I picked up the newish (well not webstore only new) Fulgrim Pink and the only one it was used on was the iridescent (well the middle leader one with the big horns since they're all a bit iridescent ) horror, it was on top of the vgc squid pink and it's a fair bit brighter than it and saves me time mixing it with white as I've always done when I need an even brighter pink. But, I actually can't see the difference to it from the others.
Also had a look at the curse of the wulfen daemon stuff which is nice and means instead of a few big horror blobs as I planned I may be better making them a lot smaller and possibly just skip the upgrades... though they only have them because this was originally an AoS only army at first. Maybe I'll learn to like them after some games, but I don't really intend to make much use of deep striking in a way I can see the banner helping and I don't really feel like it'd be great to have a bunch of summoning going in which is the only other reason I could see for having the banner. One thing to learn fast with these 25mm bases though is you really need to weigh them. I'm using 5c coins, probably the best use for the things and I think about half if not a little more have a coin under their base at this point; banner guy needs 2 to even stand on a flat surface.

Picked up another box of screamers as well so I can have a few of them to paint at once as a break from pinks with more blues, might wait until I have a full squad of 9 to paint up. Might get around to having 2 squads like that, they seem fun to kind of mass up. Thinking flamers, which I may not use much but like the models, I'll probably paint with more purples to balance out. As for the big things, sadly doesn't look like the vortex beast can be used in 40k so that puts him pretty low on the list of things to do at the moment but it'll be an interesting model to get to painting like this. Got a couple of ideas for stuff like the portalglyph as well if I feel like doing it; thing doesn't seem great in game but it'd pretty great from a modelling point of view.

Also out of curiosity I inverted the colours since it reminded me of negatives, and I think they look pretty cool.

First 10 are done now, I actually like this scheme a lot more en masse than individual. I think it looks like crap looking at a single horror by itself.

I think next I may build the rest of the daemons I have to get them all ready for painting. Going on a trip on wednesday however which means I won't be back to work on them until a few days before christmas so don't want to get into painting too much before then.

Also looking around at dice for these daemons too, because I kind of like having nice looking dice that suit the army itself. At the moment these are the dice I have to work with for both 40k and AoS.

Spoiler:
From left to right: chessex scarab royal blue 12mm, chessex easter pink 12mm, gw harlequin dice, D&G gem blitz blue 16mm

The little 12mms look alright and sadly the pink ones have been too hard to read for opponents in the past.
So was looking more at 16mms again, sorting them out so I have a bag for AoS with those nice scenery dice and d12s and a 40k one with the scatter die.
I also have just one of these I use for my dark magician deck.

chessex royal purple borealis 16mm; which is ultimately what I've decided to get more of.

There was a close second which were these.

Those are 12mm but couldn't find a good picture of the 16mm ones, D&G toxic blue and pink. They're a bit too eye grating compared to the borealis ones which are this nice deep purple that appears blue in a bunch of different lights.

Looking great! I especially like how the eyes turned out on the daemons, it's vivid and dramatic. As for dice, I recommend the borealis, it's just looking like it's gonna be easier to read.

Horrors are looking great. The inverted colour pic is cool too.

As for dice, go for the ones which are easier to read from a couple of feet away.

Funny how I say I don't want to get into painting half a squad before I leave, so I end up building the other 3 screamers and prime them. Then decide why not and before I know it all 6 are already done.

Haven't been this productive in hobby stuff for quite a while now, so I'm pretty happy with myself with the pace and progress I'm going at at the moment with these daemons. My money probably would like me to not keep up this pace after I've worked through what I have though.

Last time I was going like this I think was back with the slaanesh daemons which was the last time an army seemed to click with me. It's good, cause I'm less worried about list building and haven't even got a specific one in mind yet just a general idea, but instead I'm sort of flowing along with ideas and models I like the look of; which in my opinion is always a sign that you're going the right way with an army because in the long run that path goes a lot further than one focused on the power level. Like I even took one look at Magnus and first thought was "I'm going to make this into a lord of change" so I have that nice customised centerpiece and not the stock standard one either. A nice project to look forward to, and to stand out a bit more.

Gave the thread a better sounding name, less dry than it was.

Anyway up to basing these flamers, which the little flames that are basically right at the base are making me really cautious of this so i don't have to fix them up.

Think the pink flames suited them better as their bodies mostly use purples and cyans so theres enough blue mixed on them as it is.

Nice work on the seekers, you really got them done fast.

Flamers are looking good too so far.

Wow, you are really plugging away at these guys!

Have you thought about experimenting with additives and finishes? I think you can get a pearlizer, that will add an opalescent sheen to the paint. Seems very tzeench. I like that palette and scheme you are working with, but it just seems a little flat. While I’m not normally a fan of gloss coats on minis, I think the extra shine and vibrancy they can bring might make them seems more demonic/magical.

I know a total coat might be a little much, and make them stand apart from your other armies, so the idea of additives came to mind. Or play around with things like BftBG or the other new technical a/o soulstone paints.

Thanks
Slowing down now though because I finished painting everything I had built except a vortex beast and lord of change, also cause I'll be away from home for the next 3 weeks from tomorrow too. Hadn't given any thought at all into additives and finishes, mostly just been experimenting with mixing the pallet around to make it look interesting. Not really a fan of glossed models either, but it really would make them look even more different than they already do. Soulstone paints interest me a bit, but I already have a few tamiya inks to play with.

One gw thing that interested me though is the verdigris wash thing, have no idea how I'd use it just yet but the colour fits with the pallet I'm working from so might be useful if I ever get the idea. For the lord of change though I am kind of planning on using a blue ink to try to darken the upper layers more to give it a different look. Well at the moment at least.. Kind of like the molten look I did for an avatar years ago but with blues and stuff this time. Not sure how well it'll go but I figure I should do something different for the centerpiece at least. Speaking of which I have a cryo phoenix head coming in the mail for that.

Maybe I'll switch back down to squid pink as well, it's a bit darker and blends a bit less with the white.

Looking otherworldly and bizarre. What would you do with the green verdigris wash, though? Don't think it'd fit...

Really not sure what I'd do with it really.

Flamers are finished.

Also got a group shot of all the finished daemons so far.

I also gave it a bit of thought and I figure that with the horrors I guess I can make a couple of units with instrument and banner work. I don't really like them and think it'd probably be better leaving them as is to keep them cheaper, but if I want to deep strike stuff they do make that easier. AoS though there's really no question and I'd take them on every single unit I can cause they're so good that way. But, the way the instrument and banner are in 40k basically just has the unit as sort of an extra reserve roll token that removes scatter, which I'll admit is really useful but I was looking more forward to not having to deal with deep striking every single game after playing the last edition of them. Although it was Slaanesh daemons then, Tzeentch ones don't really care as much so it'll probably be more useful to this time around.

Yeah, remember the deep striking the guy did with summoned horrors in the after-battle-report? Could be useful tactically if you want to try it at least, and that'd make it easier maybe.

Also for fun stuff like dragging along a soulgrinder and stopping it from scattering with its huge body.

Not much of an update so not going to change the title and such, but just got back from a cross country trip, as a souvenir in South Australia I picked up the Wrath of Magnus (really liking the Tzeentch warp table and the fun with making spawns it's making me think of) and a box of horrors; so now I have 20 horrors to work through and will be getting started on soon. Also thanks to the new sisters stuff being leaked, I've actually figured out what to do with them finally; I'll be trading them off for stuff like Magnus for my daemons. Unfortunately for the sisters it's a case of too little too late for me, the best they can do now is help my daemons grow.

Sell off your Sisters? You’ve made a poor little orphan girl somewhere deeply upset. And I’m betting she’s loading her bolter and getting ready for vengeance. My general advice for people selling off armies is “Don’t” Unless you really need the money. At some point you are going to regret it. If the SoB get a new line and codex in the near future, you will regret selling them off.

But anyway, looking forward to seeing you get some demons painted.

You filthy heretic.

I'm trading them to my brother so they won't be gone forever just in case. We tend to trade now and then anyway, we've got this half built vindicator that keeps getting passed back and forth since it's mostly just good for making into a wreck for terrain now.

My problem is I usually have trouble focusing on one project lately and I'd rather trade them off to help stick to this one than run off to half do them later.

Next 10 horrors are built and ready to prime now, didn't give them banners and such since I'm planning to only really do that for squads to act as delivery systems for other units. So I'd start these on the table or pull them in with the first 10 I did already.

Thanks to the realm of battle tile I keep meaning to use for whenever it is I finally do armies on parade, I've tested the balance of every single horror I've built so far and balanced them out too.

Also my dice arrived and I finally got around to putting some new batteries into the LoS thing I've had for ages, been spending it's time in a drawer since about mid 2009.

Also trying to figure out or find some nice but consistent objective markers for these daemons.

Well just finished building the rest of the horrors I have at the moment. Went with no upgrades for either squad but the next I'll probably toss them in; can't have them all act as tow trucks.

The unpainted aren't even weighted yet which is always the fun part. Also after the second box I started building them in 2 sessions; the first I put their body together and onto the base and the second I fix up 10 pairs of arms and have a pile of left arms, right arms, and horror bodies. Then I just randomly pick up from these piles and toss them together.

Well was working on horrors after priming everything and ended up starting and finishing the finecast lord of change I have. Still plan on making a converted one to lead the army but doesn't mean I won't only have one, might end up playing big enough games where I'd need kind of like "minion" lord of changes to take on some bigger things.

Anyway keeping in theme with Tzeentch like stuff and being fun I've decided this one can be named Wotsit'toya.

Here are the horrors, up to picking out the metal parts on them which is the most tedious part of everything so far.

And here's my first herald, with the grimoire of true names of course.

He's missing his left foot, but I managed to bend him enough that his tail appears to be holding him up in place of it; decided he can be called M'yleg (actually came up with a name for this guy first which inspired the name for the loc).

I've also worked out a list for everything I have at the moment (just need to get 3 more horrors and they're on the way in the mail), at exactly 1000 points.
Daemons of Tzeentch -- 1000
lord of change
psyker lv3, greater reward, staff of change

herald of tzeentch
exalted locus of conjuration, grimoire of true names

6 flamers

6 screamers

11 pink horrors
instrument, blasted standard
11 pink horrors
11 pink horrors

Originally this list sat at an annoying 998 with 3 squads of 10 horrors and a ml 3 loc and ml 2 herald; which gave me 8wc at 1000 points. By tuning the herald down to 1, I managed to fit in an extra horror each to bring it up to 10wc at 1000. Which is not all that bad considering the main opponent I might be facing to start off with these daemons is playing grey knights.

Made in au
Lady of the Lake

Finally got the metal parts mostly finished, leaving the eyes and the bases and any touch ups left for this next 10.

Then there will only be 13 horrors left until I've finished painting the first 1000 points. Won't be the last of them though, I'll probably end up with a fair ammount of them before I even start looking at the blue horrors (not enough for all of them to split) and brimstones (not planning on bothering for splitting at all, though some usable squads might be good). Either way neither of those will really show up unless their box comes out or really I could just make my own brimstones anyway. At least I should try to have enough for a squad because of the warpstorm table.

Just need to clean the edges of the bases for the horrors now to finish them off.

Herald I painted up a bit while I was waiting for the mud to set on the horrors before.

Just waiting for the mud to set on it as well so I can finish him off.

Also took the time to paint up the RoB title I got for my sylvaneth before that I've decided to use for the daemons instead. I'd started on it before priming it black, then rhynox hide then a light dusting of whatever that lighter brown spray GW used to do is called.

So really all I was doing was the glowing.

I'm not sure if the board is done yet as I'd like to add some terrain to it as well, but this is what it looks like with what I've painted so far on it.

That's still short the herald and 23 more horrors that will make up 1000 points. Kind of want to go to 1500 on it, but given the amount of stuff on it so far I don't want it to get too busy. I was thinking of painting a large glowing Tzeentch emblem over in the corner opposite of the hill as it's a large open brown area at the moment. But I'm happy with the cracks as they are, and they look great with a lord of change placed in the middle of them too. Should look even better once I get to making my own to lead this army instead of the one I have now.

Nice. I’m really getting the “Magic made manifest” theme of your army with these guys. They are the stuff of aether, coalesced to come and eat your soul.

I think the mud bases help, and the tile really ties it in. There is a crack in reality, and from that they come.
