Just flicking about the channels and an Ad for Time Commanders popped up.

Not been on a about a decade IIRC this series is hosted by the moon faced barrowboy Greg Wallace, better than Hammond I suppose. I like Mr Wallace but whether his excitable persona covers up for what I assume is a lack of historical knowledge remains to be seen.

It starts with a scrap in Rome circa 202 BCE with re-enactment segments to fill out the technical bits. I'm less interested in this that the latter episodes that the Ad showed Napoleonic Era redcoats doing their stuff.

Starts 12th December on BBC4 @ 9PM.

I saw this too. I always liked the old series. I think it was well done with a nice balance of the 'game' and the historical context. Pity it's only three episodes.

Wonder whether we'll get a 'historical' fight of Blackfire pass!

"Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. " - V

I forgot too

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

I quite enjoyed that episode.

Host was better than I'd thought, so fair play to the guy.

Crazy story :

In one of the earlier series GW was approached to send some guys, but it didn't work out, mainly due to the production company being somewhat awkward.

...alas....

anyway :

Just watched this, seems mostly okay, but still not sure if I like it or if I don't like it, maybe I should ask Greg...

Just watched the first episode on the iplayer.

I kinda liked it, the two experts were a bit jarring. I've seen that mike lows guy on other historical programs and never been a fan, but somehow he's less annoying than the women.

Greg Wallace as a presenter sorta works, which is a surprise as I thought he'd be terrible.

The format works, two quick skirmishes followed by the large battle. Having two teams play against each other is much better than the old show.

Of course I spent the whole time assuming I could do a much better job than those playing.

it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.

Yeah, he's like the Uk go-to guy for historical weapons it seems.

She was also the historian -- or one of them -- in earlier series.

I wasn't quite that worried but he's turned out to be pretty good

Well, sometimes you definitely can. One time I saw them have their archers fire into the backs of their poor spearmen standing in front.

Sort of.

Caught the 3rd one last night.

Whilst entertaining to watch I genuinely wonder why some people go in for/are up for this.

Outer Space, Apparently

I'd like to watch this, but the BBC's new licensing policy means I can't; there's no way in hell I'm paying £145 to watch one or two good shows on the BBC amongst all the gak they're making now.

The old Time Commanders play a lot on the TV at my LGS - maybe the guy who runs the store can put on the new ones for me...
