I'm getting back into 40k in a small way due to money limits and I cant decide on what to play

I used to play space marines, i was tempted to do a raptors chapter build by repainting my assault on black reach and assorted space marines i have but i am thinking about selling them.

Orks, i have some orks from black reach lying around, any reason not to build a small army?

tau, i like the mechs and the technology.

guard because it has more of the "your guys" feel to it and i would run it veteran heavy

eldar eldar were the first army i played till i sold the models, i was tempted by nostalgia

CSM, very tempted to run an iron warriors army with cultists

Ideally while i would like to win i prefer to build n army on a theme rather than cheese

If you woud like to win a few games and still have fun with your army, Guard and not so cheesy eldar lists myself i mainly play orks but it's far from a cheap army.

Waagh like a bawz

Kaptin Goldteef's waagh! 16250 points 45/18/3 (W/L/D) 7th Ed

6250 points 9/3/1 (W/L/D) sixth-ed
Dark elves: 2350points 3/0/0 (W/L/D)
3400 points 19/6/0 (W/L/D) 8' armybook
Wood Elves 2600 points, 6/4/0 (W/L/D)

I love guard to death but they are by no means an inexpensive force to run.

The sheer amount of equipment you need to simply reach 1850 points is staggering. But, as armies go, Guard gives you nearly anything you could want, Armored, Mechanized, Motorized, Infantry...

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!

*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs.

Build a Few Kill teams ..play them and then figure which way you want to jump..(the kill team box has both Tau and Space marines in it ) ..Orks are always fun and great at kill team ..and because your only going to 200 points it makes it Cheaper..(it also has a copy of 7th)

If you're looking at it in a small way and not wanting to break the bank, I'd go with something involving high points and ideally high convertability, like Grey Knights or Deathwatch.

LOL, I know the feeling with airsoft. Just when you think you are all set, something breaks down! Onwards, for more replacement parts!

As for Guard, more elite forces is possible. Mechanized troops or Armored groups will reduce model count, of course you'll still be buying a lot of APCs to supplement your forces (rather than infantry.) One good thing though, the Start Collecting kits will get you a fair amount of resources for far less money which is good. Also Ebay.

Personally I've recently become a fan of the large infantry forces though.

The Start Collecting kits, yes. They'll save you $10 to $30 depending on the army.

(The other bulk kits do not offer a discount however, only the Start Collecting kits do)

Welcome to Dakkadakka! CSM are awesome. They are not op cheese that will see people avoid playing you. They are an elite force (ie: less models means less money). They are freaking as cool as it gets in 40k IMO. Their kits are cheaper than Space Marines too, because they are older. They don't have nearly as many options though. Obviously I'm not counting the new Thousand Sons when I say this.

Ya, they are about as far from OP as you can get as only Dar kEldar are under them. At lower points (1k and down) they work ok, but once you go over that they get really bad, really fast. Mostly because they have like, 4 good units, so there is a ton of traps in there.

Frankly Imp Guard and Space Marines are the safest bets as they have the least trap units. I would avoid Eldar as, while you can build a functional list randomly (no seriously, its been done) if you actually sit down and make an intelligent list you will probably obliterate the opposition. Orks on the other hand have a bunch of trap options too and its really annoying because most of the bad stuff used to be good, but thats just the grumblings of an Ork player. Chaos Marines are as i stated above. They are the oldest Dex and they are in a very bad way right now, being held up by Lords on Juggernaughts, Heldrakes, Psychic Shriek Sorcs and maybe Nurgle Marines.

However all is not lost if you want to run CSM, just make sure you use the stuff in Traitors Hate as it will help patch a bunch of stuff in your army. It stil isnt great, but it puts you in a better position.

Welcome back.
If I were new (or getting back into the game) I would focus on Kill Team. Almost everyone at my store is bringing 200-point Kill Team lists as well as their normal 1500+ lists. Plus, you get a full marine squad and Tau and that 7th edition rulebook.
Plus, you seem to be a dabbler... perfect for building a bunch of kill teams rather than focusing on one army.

You being experienced with Space Marines, building a Deathwatch wouldn't be bad. You can buy a box of the Death Watch terminators and get 30 regular deathwatch shoulder pads for free.

Orks... it's hard to win with a theme right now.
Tau... almost everything in their codex is good.
Space Marines... Gladius is flexible, but getting boring.
Eldar... three of the $85 Start Collecting gives you a Jet Bike army. Few models, but great models. Kinda cheesy though.
Chaos... can't talk about.
IG... Can't talk about.

If you have $1000 total budget in mind, go with Guard

Otherwise the other armies will tend to be half the cost - and half the models to paint!

Stay away from Orks or guard to many models and too expensive.

Space marine are cheap especially In the resell market. However I'd recommend either the death watch Christmas box with 25% online retailer right now or get the ad mech one and ad mech get started one and you will have a full competitve war convacation list minis a knight.
