Herzlos wrote:Yeah it definitely sounds like a commission based sales job, with terms so poor they fear you wont' even attend the interview if you knew them.
That said, if you've got nothing better to do, and there's some base salary, it's maybe worth doing it until you can get something better.
I will just give a warning about my youngest brother. When he left university he took a telesales job in financial services. A lot of the pay was commission based on contacts made and contracts provisionally agreed. However he quickly realised that if people he had successfully signed up to services quit them later on, his commission would be retroactively withdrawn. This gave him the prospect of having to pay money back to the company even after having left the job.
Needless to say he resigned ASAP.

I assume he'd be taking public transport to their office building anyway. This doesn't bode well

Agreed!
Given his degree and experience to date, I agree with the earlier poster who said to just go on the interview unless in was in place of a different/better opportunity.
HSM1 needs all the experience he can get at this point, including interviewing, especially as it looks as if that FBI opportunity fell through?

Even if you know you don't want the job, put your ass in a chair and ask questions. Get used to the interviewing process. Practice makes perfect, other cliches.

Correct, feth driving around there. Living near your job would be horrific with apartment prices anyway. I have a few friends in LA that spend an hour to commute to their job barely ten miles away. Transit in the Bay is a lot better than the other CA cities.
Was this job through a temp agency? Waive your degree at an agency and you should get a dozen interviews within a few weeks for similar marketing jobs if this is your field. Even if they don't offer the exact field, you can pad your resume and move laterally within or jump to another company. Most temp agency jobs are going to start out with unlivable wages in CA unfortunately (14-20/ hr for professionals). Not having car insurance/upkeep/bills might make it worthwhile in the short term to get into a job while you apply for your primary career (I work at a bank/FCU after having an EDU degree and started at some low 30s)
In my state, unless you're in the cities you need a car (I can't afford one) and I'm fine with biking or great transit. I was late to work often starting out though

He's right!
I've finally figured out how to interview correctly at 24. Retail jobs have completely different interviews than food jobs - and both are unrelated to how an office job works. I can machine gun out multiple responses to "greatest weakness" "tell an experience" "use XYZ jargon example" now that I've had enough of them. I spoke to my HR coordinator and manager a few times about resume/cover letter tips which helped me out. I've even had some big wig half devil VP woman tell me exactly what I did wrong in an interview harshly.

It sounds a lot like the direct sales job my daughter had for a few months. She drove all over Utah, setting up events at supermarkets, giving spiels on kitchen appliances, heating pads, and other whatnots.
She put a lot of wear and tear on her vehicle, got crappy sleep, and had to stay in divey hotels.
She looked at it as discipline training, reasoning that if she was able to slog through a few months of that, then any job after would be a piece of cake.
I was impressed with the level of maturity she developed in that work.
