Can I buy a drop pod, then allocated it to a 10-man squad, without buying the drop pod strictly as a dedicated transport?

Example army list:
Praetor, no ROW
10 Tacticals
(other stuff)
Drop pod (allocated to the tacticals)

Holy Terra.

As far as I know, Drop pods can be separate FA choices, so i guess you could do this. Alternatively, you could run Orbital Assault RoW, or make them Raven Guard (yay!) and run Decapitation Strike.

You can buy an Anvillus Dreadclaw as a seperate fast attack option.

Sadly, drop pods are listed in the questionable 'Dedicated Transport' section that has a troops icon. I shall be taking Anvilus Dreadclaws instead. Its just annoying that they are significantly costlier for almost no major benifit.

No major benefit? You do realize you can get back into it, fly it across the table, and jump out on an objective, or something of the sort.

Anvilus Dreadclaws are great options.

My planned army list was:
Imperial Fists
Spoiler:

HQ:
Sigismund

Troops:
10 Tacticals

20 Tacticals
Vexilla
Artificer armour

9 Templar Bretheren

Elites:
Apothecary
Combi-flamer

Quad-Mortar Battery
Shatter Shells

Fast Attack:
Anvillus Drop Pod
(Allocated to the 10 tacticals)
Anvillus Drop Pod
(Allocated to the templar bretheren)

Heavy Support:
Leviathan Dreadnought
Siege Drill
Armoured Ceramite
Phosphex Discharger
Dreadnought drop pod

Deredeo Dreadnought
Aiolos Missile Launcher

2000 points

Being able to exchange the anvillus DPs for 'regular' drop pods (and some other cuts) would allow me enough points for a small deep-striking terminator squad.
The 10 tacticals in a pod guarantee the leviathan and the templar bretheren arriving on turn 1.

The main problem I have with the anvillus is its cost, I dont really want to be able to reembark upon it to fly around.

My meta plays that only units with a dedicated transport option can take a Drop Pod or Rhino. It avoids the uncomfortable idea of Jump Pack troops in a Drop Pod (though they could theoretically use an Anvillus Drop Pod...). It also keeps a Primarch out of a Rhino or Drop Pod.

It works for the most part so far, because the Anvillus was close to US$100 at one point, and when you need multiples of it... and let's be honest: No one takes a Kharybdis. It's not worth the price, points, or what it does on the battlefield. Also, it's HUGE.

I'm leaning toward getting a Kharybdis as it is the only way I can bring my Deredo with my Orbital Assault army, as far as I know.

Dreadnought Drop Pod doesn't work?

Depends on how you look at the rules. The Deredo entry has no dedicated transports listed, therefore I at least would feel skeevy buying a unit out of the dedicated transports section and putting a unit into it which is not listed as being able to buy that transport. Since the Anvillus pod entry specifically mentions units that do not have a dedicated transport listing - the mortis variants - I feel like the mortis and deredo variants are not intended to be used with normal dreadnought drop pods.

I'd have to disagree. I use it as a delivery system for Lorgar, Zardu, Primus Medicae and 8 Gal Vorbak and it's durability is what makes it! Armour 12 all round with 5HP's and it can jink! It's amazing!

Add in 10 str6, twin linked, pinning shots which can fire at 5 separate attacks and it's assault vehicle USR and it's such a pain in the ass to play against its great!

If I am not terribly mistaken, it's clearly stated in BRB that jump infantry cannot enter transports unless the transport rules specifically allow this.

You are mistaken. The BRB does not say this. Individual unit entries state what can, and cannot ride in a transport. If it doesn't restrict what can get into the transport, then anything can as long as it fits. In 40K, the only units that can take a Rhino, Razorback or Drop Pod (Dedicated Transports) are Space Marine Tactical Squads, Assault Squads without jump packs, heavy support squad, command squads, and the occasional elites choice (Like Stormguard). The Rhino entry under Transport Capacity, says "Ten models. It cannot carry models with the bulky, very bulky, or extremely bulky special rules", and then the Drop Pod specifically states what models can ride in it.

Contrast that with 30K, where there is a "sub-section" of Dedicated Transports in the Troops section, and Rhinos again restrict by model size, but the drop pod states "...10 models or 1 Legion Dreadnought or 1 Rapier Carrier and Crew". In the BRB, it states a bulky model is 2 models, very bulky is 3 models, and extremely bulky is 4 models. The other vehicles with transport capacity state the number of models, and sometimes restrict what models can use the transport.

RAW, you could take a Anvilius Pattern Drop Pod as a Fast Attack choice, put a 3 model Command Squad and your Primarch in it. Not sure that would be a wise move, but you could do it.

"Only Infantry models can embark upon Transports (this does not include Jump or Jet Pack Infantry), unless specifically stated otherwise."

Under Transport Capacity.

"RAW, you could take a Anvilius Pattern Drop Pod as a Fast Attack choice, put a 3 model Command Squad and your Primarch in it. Not sure that would be a wise move, but you could do it."

That's the point of being able to buy non-Dedicated Transports? There's no conflicting RAW here-putting Primarchs in Dreadclaws has always been a thing.

My $0.02, which since 1992 has rounded to nothing. Take with salt.
