I've seen this cosplay before somewhere, and there's one thing I always wanted to know. Given how skilled the person who made the costume was, why didn't they just make a standard Howling Banshee outfit?

What do you mean? This one is based on the Banshees from the Dawn of War 3 trailer, which was clearly intentional.

For some reason, I always get annoyed at cosplay. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that many of them have no real concept of the source material.

That being said, great job on the Howling Banshee!

It makes me wonder why these people put so much energy into a subculture instead of putting it towards being special effects technicians and costumers for movies and TV.

They could turn their hobby into a paycheck.

Like how people spend hundreds of hours painting and assembling toy soldiers instead of using those same skills to be painters, colorists, engineers, or architects? Yeah, hobbyists are pretty hard to understand.

There's no standard outfit for Howling banshees. They can just be from a different shrine or something of the sort. Same reason I can paint my incubi however I want.

Which movie or television project could someone who's interested in 40k subculture and Eldar in particular work on in order to "turn their hobby into a paycheque". Hollywood aren't exactly churning out remakes of Ultramarines.

Well odds are if somebody can do 40k specific things to high standard he or she can do non-40k stuff as well. It's not like hollywood rents prop makers for new batman movie guys who can do only batman stuff...

And as to why he doesn't turn it into paycheques...Who says they don't? There are shock horror guys who not only do something for work AND similar stuff just for fun.

I began my career in FX for film and theme parks - these days, there's both more money and more creativity in cosplay. Unless you WANT to work 22hours a day for what (after union dues) ends up being slightly less than minimum wage. With no benefits ... lol

I'm not aware of many jobs that pay people to build and paint toy soldiers. And are you really comparing what we do as a hobby to what engineers or architects do?

LOL

Cosplay people could actually get jobs in the movie and TV industry, while there is no chance of a person who excels at the 40K hobby to get a job in engineering or architecture just because they can build and paint models well. Both occupations require a degree.

C'mon, man.

Well, no one says you have to be a one trick pony. People are allowed to branch out and spread their horizons. I love 40K, but I also enjoy other things from comics, movies, cartoons, and books that have nothing to do with 40K. Most FX people in movies and TV can do it all. They don't just do zombie or superhero movies.

Except for the part about turning the hobby into a paycheck, and the fact that most of us who spend time building, painting and playing with our toy soldiers actually have a pretty good grasp of the source material, as opposed to most cosplayers.

Other than those things, great job on fixing it for me.

LOL

You can't be serious.

Movies and TV is a multi-billion dollar industry. They actually pay people to make costumes. And you are full of crap when you say they are making less than minimum wage. Yes there are long hours, but please. People make a very good living doing FX for movies and TV.

Cosplay is a hobby that people do at comicbook conventions. Who exactly is paying them?

Maybe they're happy doing what they do purely for fun. Radical idea I know, using your time for something that generates no discernible source of income, but hey. Turning your hobby into a paycheque is great if you can do it under your own steam, but that's exceptionally difficult, and doing it to someone else's specifications would probably turn it into a chore fairly quickly. I'd hate to lose something I'm passionate about in pursuit of a lousy income stream.

I think you misunderstand me.

I get the doing it for fun part. That's what all hobbies are done for...fun and passion.

Many cosplay people could turn their hobby into a paycheck by doing it in movies and TV. I would imagine that cosplay people have a better chance of breaking into their industry than writers, artists, and musicians. There are tons of opportunities for good and creative FX people. Are you actually saying that would be a bad thing, to make a living doing what you love to do as a hobby?

I love writing fiction (horror, sci-fi, and fantasy), and if I could ever make a living selling short stories, comicbooks and novels, I would quit my day job in a heartbeat. You speak of a hobby becoming a chore if you had to do it to someone else's specifications. That's called work. Most of us have jobs that pay the bills. We get paid to perform work to other people's specifications. I write software, and as much as I love doing it, I would much rather write books, movies, and comics. And guess what, I would still have to work according to an editor/director/publisher's specifications, at least to a certain extent. That's the real world. But I cannot imagine how doing something I love as a hobby, and getting paid for it, would become any more of a chore than working a normal job. If anything, I would take less money to write fiction for a living, as opposed to coding for a living, and I really enjoy my job as a programmer.
