Let's have some fun threads, there's too many downer ones
So pretty simple, what part of your army do you love the best? It could be the first thing you thought about them, could be something you learned after years, could be both. Love is good like that. Was it the colour scheme or the models? Did they play well on the table? Maybe there's some fluff that you connect with.
I started with eldar when I was younger. I was serious and moody so they fit. I liked to win and they kicked butt on the table. I actually liked Rangers the best. I thought snipers were cool and I connected to the "caught between two worlds" thing they had going. Their cloaks were cool looking too.
Now I play orks. I ended being not serious at all when I grew up so they fit me better. I like that they're the underdog and that they enjoy what they do without ever really thinking too much about it. They just wing it ya know? They're dumb and poor and short lived so they can just give something their all and really live in the moment. I still like winning sometimes and it feels way more fulfilling when I'm playing orks, like I have a lower golf handicap or something. I kinda really like going fast too so they fit there. I'm happy MANz and bikers are a decent unit, they're probably my favorite models. I had converted some of the old bikers to chopper style bikes back when they were ugly. It's a lot of fun to customize my vehicles and painting each unit to be part of a different clan gives the army a lot of character.
Gonna go marines I think finally for my next army. Might do chaos. Iron warriors are cool. I think the black and yellow hazard signs are pretty neat and a long range army could change up my play style some. Maybe some loyalists, think ultramarines, raven gaurd or salamanders. I think the blue would pop on the table, Ravens are my favourite bird/sports team/poem and I like black and white, and the salamanders dragon slayers with flamethrowers is pretty neat and I do like green too, of course!
So how about you, what brings you back to your favourite army, or any army you've gotten into or see yourself getting into? Maybe you can help someone find what they want to!

You can do a ton of kitbashing with Space Marines and still have them look good. You can take a tactical marine's body, put on a Sternguard head, a Vanguard power weapon, an Assault Marine bolt pistol and FW shoulderpads and make an awesome looking sergeant. My Captain must have parts from like 5 different kits and two different lines I swear.

Death-Dealing Ultramarine Devastator
|
The main draw to the Ultramarines is also the thing I least like about them. The lore. The thirteenth were by far the most interesting of all the legions, in my opinion, and in 40k their lore in places has some hidden gems that I play on with my own head cannon, for example the internal power struggle between the first and second company Captains to succeed Calgar. The problem is how writers have gone too far and Mary Sue'd a number of our characters, individuals who had the potential for a lot of development, where they're now nearly a meme.
Another huge influence was as pointed out above the variety on models and the almost endless possibilities for kitbashing and conversion.

I always had a soft spot for the plucky guardsman. Gaunts ghosts was great, always kinda wanted to do AM but I just can't do another horde army atm. Catachans would be cool, fits well with the orks, do some jungle terrain. What did you go with?

Boosting Black Templar Biker
|
My main army are Black Templars. They look awesome and they are just about the badassestest of marines from their fluff. Kitting out characters as CC monsters never gets old plus i really enjoy the medieval-knightly flair which also gives plenty of ideas for conversions and painting extravaganza.
For second i got me some guard. I got an urge to pick things several times over (read: spam), so i don't lose certain capabilities of the army with a single loss or two. For guard that seems kind of fluffy, and as i don't enjoy hordes too much i went with a nicely uniform mechanized army with a single decked out platoon of infantry for back up. And thatvshadowsword is a beauty to behold!
And then there's some Eldar on my table, i love Dire Avengers and the Wraithlord for their models so i got some. Then my girl once wanted to paint Hawks so i got some. Thus i got a little collection of models i like with a fluff i like and they are slow growing with a lot of attention i put on every little guardian. Might add an Avatar next, we'll see.
One thing i learned from my time in the hobby is to love my models for what they are and not their rules plus i really, really got into narrative games and campaigns compared to my earlier self, when i was oriented to waac... gw might be jerks but they still give me my favorite toys. Speak of a love hate relation

Being perfectly honest, Sisters were my first and still main army. What got me into them? What do I love about them? Is it the fact that they give the ecclesiarchy, one of the driving forces and all encompassing facets of imperial life a presence? Definitely. Was it that freaking sweet Exorcist pipe organ tank? Ohhh yesssss. Is it the army of boobs?.........yeah; okay, I came for the girl pecs and stayed for the Exorcist and fluff.

Been Around the Block
|
The consistently humorous writing, the perfect combination of blast weapon spam and horrendous accuracy, the simplistic playstyle, the tied-first position with Daemons as far as sheer randomness that can affect the army on any given turn.
Everything about the Orks seems straight out of a 10 year old Brit's dream: weird machines made out of chewing gum and frying pans; the casual reference to Anglo-Saxon mythology; the armour made of frying pans and overpriced concert T-shirts; the dead metal biker gang bad boy look and the concept of freedom to do whatever; guns chosen more for their size, sound, and flashiness than efficiency.
One would be hard pressed to find a player who deeply hates playing against Orks. To me they are a perfect teacher's army: they have a few tricks you can pull to catch people unaware (see the above statement about blasting your own troops , as well as Planes, Trukks, and Automobiles- focused armies), but in every force there is at least one unit that a savvy player can catch onto and try to turn around a losing game.
If you get a game against an ork player, and the first thing you see is how few units of Boyz they unpack from their case, you know it's going to be a fun time .

To be different and not say 'converting' like you would expect I gotta say the humor.
There's a lot of people that whine about grimdark and are literally crying tears over Dawn of War 3. I, on the other hand, enjoy a bit of brevity in my wargaming.
for example, the great story of ork warlord Grizgutz. A noted kleptomaniac, Grizgutz launches his fleet into a warp jump, only to jump through time back seconds before they originally jumped. He then kills his doppelganger so he can have two of his favorite gun. The resultant confusion then stops the waaaaagh in its tracks. Absolutely hilarious.

That's what did it for me. I started with an Ork Army and wanted something else with more of a focus on Elite Units and less of a horde style. I've never been a fan of "superheros" that seem to have an answer for everything ( SM), so the idea of running an army of highly trained humans seemed interesting.

My first army was Dark Eldar.
I love them because they are violent, I've always had a thing for the idea of a force so brutal and terrifying you'd rather die than face them, I also really like the way Raiders look.
Space wolves, I like them because of a similar reason to Deldar, terrifying to face in the fluff, savage and brutal. I don't find myself playing them much however because they just don't fit the way I like to play.
Deathwatch, started as allies, ended up as a small 1500 point fighting force. I love the conflict between kill teams and the personality that each model has. They play how I like to, very adaptable, and tricksy, throwing most opponents for a look and exploiting mad synergies.
(soon to come) Raven Guard I love because of their compassion and humanitarianism on the fluff, and their tactical flexibility in the lore. I love the tactical flexibility and synergies in game

Blood-Drenched Death Company Marine
|
My army, if it isn't painfully obvious, is Blood Angels. Often not the most competitive Marine army available, it is still a lot of fun to play them. I have several things I really like about the army. They are some of the best looking Imperial models out there for starters, as well as being awesome in the fluff, with a lot of cool history and some of the most interesting characters in the lore. Sanguinius of course, Dante, Mephiston, Lemartes, not to mention other successor characters like Seth, of the Flesh Tearers. They make a great protagonist, and Blood Angels are noble and fight hard for the Imperium. My favorite thing about them, though, is their duality. Their nobility paired with their rage; the shining gold and briliant red, stalwart defenders, moments later transformed into rage fueled madmen clad in funeral black, hell bent on bringing justice to a foe that died ten millennia past and selling their lives as dearly as they can before falling to the madness completely. Fighting that battle every day, striving to keep the darkness inside in check and be the best they can be despite the flaw inside all of them. That nobility is what I love about them. Just my view on that. Take it easy. -Red__Thirst-
