Cool Mini or Not is upping its investment in quality miniatures for its catalogue of board games, taking on industry veteran and model-making pro Mike McVey.

McVey has been working with miniatures for three decades, joining Warhammer outlet Games Workshop in 1987 as a painter before becoming a minis designer for the firm a decade later.

In the late 1990s he helped establish Wizards of the Coast’s new miniatures team, later moving to Privateer Press, where he co-designed Warmachine and many of the wargame’s expansions and standalone spin-offs, such as Hordes.

McVey is no stranger to CMON’s work with minis, having helped create the models for games including Eric Lang’s Blood Rage and The Others over the last four years. His work can also been seen in Lang’s Rising Sun, due to launch on Kickstarter later this year.

CMON creative director David Preti hinted at the publisher’s ongoing commitment to miniatures-focused releases, teasing: “We are already planning new projects for the years to come.”

CMON is excited to announce Mike McVey has joined the family as a key figure in our Production and Development team. Mike and CMON have a fantastic relationship and track record, and this is the next great step.

With three decades of experience in the industry, Mike is well known for his ability to produce some of the best miniatures around. His past experience includes Games Workshop, Wizards of the Coast, and Privateer Press.

“I’m delighted to be joining the CMON team. It’s been a joy collaborating with them the last few years, with Blood Rage and The Others both being great successes. I look forward to working even more closely with them, and delivering fantastic board game projects in the future,” expressed Mike.

David Preti, CMON’s Creative Director, added, “I have been working side-by-side with Mike for the last four years, and I share with him the same vision in respect to art and ethic. Having him as an official part of the CMON family is a great honor because of Mike’s history and personality. I welcome not only one of the best professionals in the field, but a true friend. We are already planning new projects for the years to come."

Mike’s vision and talent can be seen in the upcoming Rising Sun game that arrives on Kickstarter soon, and he’ll continue working with his team on many exciting CMON projects to come.

...is a bit of a spin on the whole Sedition Wars KS, isn't it?

Still, best of luck to all!

After sedition wars issues its like studio Mcvey went on silent mode. I remember the time there was a steady release of miniatures but that all ended.
I kind of miss those special miniatures and always looked forward for any news.

The KS'ers the others and watever may have been big hits… I just dont follow KS anymore so its like Mcvey studios vanished from the map for a couple years now.

Agreed, it's a shame that Studio Mcvey stopped producing their minis.

I really hope they revist SW as it had great potential. Now they have KS exp under their belt I'm sure they will hit it out of the park!

I suspect that, just like Sedition Wars wasn't mentioned in the Press Release, it won't really get a lot of air time going forward either.

Probably for the best for all concerned, too.

It's pretty much what Studio McVey has been doing (as independent contractors for CMON) since Sedition Wars died,

and I guess making it formal guarantees a decent pay check on Mikes side, and means from CMONs side that he can't run off and work for somebody else at short notice

and maybe CMON will get access to the existing Studio McVey art & sculpt assets which could mean a chance to get some of the non-sedition wars stuff agajn even if it is in CMON plastic (I agree with Alpharius that I doubt sedition wars itself will ever be mentioned again)

CMoN bought out the rights to Sedition Wars from Mike some time ago so it belongs to them now. No great surprise here all Mikes work has been for CMoN for some time and they have unannounced projects into the future. I wonder if Remy went with Mike as he was working full time for SMV.

1 project that didn't deliver as expected in the early days of KS and PVC but more successes since they have worked on Blood Rage, The Others and Zombicide Black Plague together which were all well received plus Rising Sun is coming up.

The models for Blood Rage are really fantastic. Honestly, the only problem with the game is its rather lackluster name, I think as the gameplay is great, too. Looking forward to more from him!

I for one am excited about this. This means more awesome minis and better quality minis. For the naysayers:

Limited edition resins (sold for years)? Perfect

Sedition wars resins? Perfect

Sedition wars KS/game? Rules, Scale, quality issues but still decent

Blood Rage? Perfect

Black Plague? Perfect

The others? Perfect

Looks like this will be a great partnership with awesome results... except for its future on my wallet!

Sedition Wars got a lot of people disillusioned from McVey, CMON, and PVC miniatures in general. Unless you're on the Zombicide bandwagon. having them all lumped up together makes it easier for people to shrug off.

Yeah, Sedition Wars was one of the first "big box of PVC" games, so I cant hold that against him. They've made great strides, so his concepts and CMON's manufacturing and game design should produce good results.

You just need to always pronounce Blood Rage as if it's the name of a Norwegian black metal band.

Think growling, and umlauts, and the kind of Satanic-Viking berserk fury that means one is always one hair trigger away from a mead-fuelled kill-crazy axe rampage.

If you look up some of the games he has been involved with the design of, think that is pretty huge news actually Vermis! To put it mildly there have been some absolute crackers.

They're putting together some serious design talent, makes me pretty excited especially considering the other news about that Game of Thrones game incoming..

Wow, that is an awesome panel of in-house talent. With how big their campaigns are, it's actually got to be more cost effective to just bring them fully on board. Really good news for the quality of their games, I think!
