Interesting to see the meeting between Trump and Merkel. Merkel looked rather confident, while Trump looked rather childish, not like an elderly statesman.
Sounds like Merkel is the last defender of the free world incl. free trade. The rest of the world (especially US, UK) is running into the woods for getting cover.

I'll put up my hand and admit I got it wrong over some aspects of Trump's vision for the USA.
For months, I argued that there was merit in some of Trump's foreign policy ideas, like a working relationship with Russia and more of a sense of America adopting a realpolitik approach to foreign affairs.
I still believe that this foreign policy approach has merit, but not with Trump. He is incapable of executing a coherent foreign policy.
The man is a buffoon, his crackpot schemes and tweets are making a mockery of the Presidency, he's annoying close allies with bizarre accusations, and the whole thing has been a shambles from day 1

It's quite funny to watch the video. He really looks like he's annoyed and acts like a child who refuses to greet Granny when she comes to visit.
I wonder how much time the Republicans will support him. Maybe some are secretly hoping for an "unfortunate accident" happening to Supreme Leader, so that Pence can step forward and save the day. Or not.

There is a simple reason for that. Trump isn't an elder statesman (though he's rlderly) and he is actually very childish in his psychology.
I think the more meaningful takeaway is that they shook hands when they first met and gave their pre-meeting little speeches.
It was after they spoke during their meeting, and (I believe) after Trump had questions from the German press (which I guess was mean to him), that this happened:

What really needs to happen is that the Democrats win both houses of congress in the mid terms then impeach both Trump and Pence (for not standing up against the dumpster-fire).
Wasn't the (unsupported) assertion that Hillary would send ground troops into Syria proof that she was a warhawk that would start WW3, and that she was therefore implicitly unfit to be President?

Admitting he was wrong also puts him well above the GOP (as well as several of the posters here...), and light years above the POTUS. Its funny how many will go to such lengths to avoid admitting they made a mistake when the act of admitting that one made a mistake is a sure-fire way to generate people's respect.

So another weekender on the taxpayer dime for Liar-in-Chief to Mar-a-Lago. That brings the running total for "I just don't feel like hanging around the WH on weekends." to around $20M and he's been in office for, what, 2 months?
Just to put that in context, " 'Meals on Wheels People', a Portland, Ore.-based service and one of the largest in the country, says it costs $2,500. annually to provide daily meals to a homebound senior, while cost of institutional care for a year in Oregon is around $60,000." Meals on Wheels, which POTUS and his administration believe should have their funding eliminated as it provides no tangible benefits, contrary to comment above, but blowing $20M on weekenders to Trump properties in just two months...which would provide approximately 8,000 homebound elderly citizens with a year's worth of MOW sustenance...is okay. Karma will have it's day with this donkey-cave.

At the federal level, Article II of the United States Constitution states in Section 4 that "The President, Vice President, and all civil Officers of the United States shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors." The House of Representatives has the sole power of impeaching, while the United States Senate has the sole power to try all impeachments. The removal of impeached officials is automatic upon conviction in the Senate. In Nixon v. United States (1993), the Supreme Court determined that the federal judiciary cannot review such proceedings.
Once again, what has been done that counts as a "high crime or misdemeanor"? So far, we have the potential for slander against Obama, and that's it. As far as Pence? Yeah, nothing.
I realize that 98.2% of people on dakka don't want him in office, but there are still proceedures. I strongly disliked a TON of stuff that Obama did, I wasn't ignorant of the processes and laws enough to call for is impeachment every damn day. It seriously makes you look like you're flipping the dugout over after losing a little league game.
And here's a thought: Bill Clinton committed perjury, which is indeed a felony. And he didn't make it all the way to impeachment. He did make it all the way to impeachment. Impeachment is the Indictment, and the Senate Proceedings are the Trial. Bill Clinton was the 2nd President to have been Impeached, and the 2nd President to have been Acquitted.

So basically you don't have to actually break laws, just piss over 50% of them off? No, I'm fairly certain it takes more than that. And a statute or law has to be on the books to violate it. Now, there may be some vague laws in there not unlike "conduct unbecoming..." that they could use, but I don't think they'd make a move like that unless it was a dead lock cert that they were going to crush him in the impeachment hearing.

And as much as he's an outsider to his own party, and the Dems have a MASSIVE axe to grind for the upset, if it was vague enough to be THAT easy, he'd be up there already. God knows how Trump will react. I can only hope that Pence gently leads him into a locked room, with soothing music, steak, and access to his twitter account, whilst the more 'competent' people handle the situation.
