first post on here so i hope this isn't to dumb of a question, but for the points which is better one land raider(250) or 2x dreadnoughts with TL lascannons and missile lanchers(250)

Well the land raider can get around faster and potentially transport another unit. But 2 dreads means 2 separate units for the enemy to shoot at and TL can make their shots more reliable.

I don't think one is better or worse, more what fulfills the best synergy with the rest of your list.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Thank you for your input, I was thinking similarly. I just want to justify not being a jackass for running X over Y

That's very, very dependent on what you're bringing and facing.

The dreadnoughts have more firepower, but are weaker to light shooting attacks - S7 bounces off a raider, but is deadly to dreads. However, they have more hull points than a Raider and are two separate squads, so against Meltaguns, Grav, Gauss, etc, they are going to survive longer, and an Explodes result won't ruin your day as badly.
They can fight in Close Combat, but this means they can also be tarpitted by cheap squads like Zombies or Gretchen.
Land Raiders can transport a unit, keeping that squad safe until they get where they're going - An AV14 box can be very helpful for keeping your units alive, at least against certain armies.
Do you have something you want to carry in the Raider? If not, I'd say the Dreads.

Raider has tl also. And with current s7 spam meta is tougher. Both are suboptimal though.

Another thing to consider is actually transporting the miniatures themselves. Two Dreadnoughts take up less room than one land raider and in my opinion they are harder to damage.

I can't believe anyone here is seriously suggesting the Land Raider.
1. Two Dreads means more targets to try and kill, creating threat saturation.
2. A suicide squad will earn less points back trying to target a Dread
3. What're you needing to transport that a simple Drop Pod can't get done?
4. If you need to transport and get to the front quickly, why are we using the standard pattern that is paying partly for the range on its weapons?
5. Plus those weapons aren't killy. Two TL Lascannons and a Heavy Bolter is far worse than two TL Lascannons and two Missile Launchers.
6. Dreads have Chapter Tactics. Mostly a minor benefit but it can come up at some point.

On the other hand a random guy with a powerfist can have a pretty good chance of messing up a Dreadnought. Pretty long shot on the Landraider. Also, if you go with the Crusader it means frag grenades for the terminators.

First, Welcome to Dakka.

Both are considered sub-par by the competitive scene. The LR has a worse rep, due mostly to the point cost and the abundance of things that ignore AV14. But both can be fun in a more casual meta. I would only take the LR if I had a unit for it to transport. You pay a lot for the cargo space and the assault ramp. If you just want firepower, there are better ways of getting it. Like the dreads. I’m less fond of the ML these days. With 4A base, I’m loath to remove the fist. If I just want to sit back and shoot, I’d rather have a pred/dev squad.

You would not be a jackass for taking either of them. For most cases anyway. You might be TFG if you take a LR in a 500 point list; most people don’t have the tools to deal with them at that level.

So? How often is that going to happen compared to being shot at? Land Raiders are less durable for the cost.

With how much s7 shots are out dreds die at a sniff. Dreads have zero durability

Yet Land Raiders have that in spades right?

Land Raiders are a bizzare mix of too tough and too squishy. If you've got the tools to deal with them they're not even remotely an obstacle, if you don't you might as well just ignore them for all the good it'll do. I've seen them get blown up first turn and I've seen them run around the table in a game where nothing could touch them.

(Personally I support two Dreadnaughts over one Land Raider if you've got the Elites slots, they can cover more of the field, take extra backup heavy weapons, and have to be targeted separately to be destroyed. The Phobos/Godhammer/whatever you feel like calling the standard Land Raider is a bit schizoid, usually specialized tools do the job better.)

I would go with the land raider in this scenario. Although I would make it a crusader, or a redeemer with a melta.

Yeah, someone could drop pod in and meltagun the land raider, or get a lucky lascannon shot.

But 2 dreadnoughts are so slow, I can safely ignore them for most of the game. If you bring them into melee threat range, any army I field would be able to handle them with minimal casualties.

The main reason i'd go with the raider is for the transport and the 18" move.

Both are pretty mediocre points investments. I'll say this about the dreads though: you don't have to glue the arms on. They fit snugly enough to stay on without glue. That let's you swap between the MLs and the power fist as you see fit.

I'd like to know what chapter you are playing, and what you already have. That'd let us advise you better.

The answer is really neither. The whole point to dreads now is 4 cc attacks at S10 AP 2. Their shooting is a joke because, for the most part, Imperial heavy weapons are a joke.

This is also true and worth talking about. Two Dreads stock with the Multi-Melta and drop pods is 270 points. That's not much more expensive than a Land Raider you gave a Multi-Melta and Extra Armor (because at that point you need to spend the points to make it not useless).

Clarification
Well i didn't think about the game points when posting this so lets look at 500, 750 1000 and 1500(please identify which you are looking at.
also i was looking at the godhammer LR, and the dreads as a unit.
if you have suggestions on other gear for these two units please throw it out there but please keep the points the same.
@Grand.Master.Raziel, regular space marines. i was thinking about iron hands for tactics
i picked equipment to justify distance.

@Nevelon, I don't get to play due to lack of availability, so i don't know what a Temple flame guard is.

i honestly didn't think i was going to get this much of a discussion so fast.
