Small Update.
I have the marine for jhe90 built and primed.
It shouldnt take as long as the last one and there is not really as much detailed work to do.
Only thing i need to do to the model before i start painting is drill out the gun hole

So todays lesson kids is to How and to How not Undercoat your models...

Ran into a small problem last night when undercoating a marine. Gonna have to strip him back and start again.

Thinking back the problem was due to the Temperature of both my Garage and Can of spray.
Probably the humidity as well as it was raining outside.

Anyways into a Detol bath with him.

On the flip side the marine of the right was done with a bit more care now that i know the beast i have to deal with.
I warmed the can up in a sink of luke warm water (warm to touch but not hot) and gave it a good shake.
One light coat i've found it more than enough to give paint something to stick to so going mad with the undercoat isnt needed as if you're painting it properly then all the undercoat should be gone by the time you're finished

dettol? nah mate Isopropyl alcohol is your freind. pick some up off ebay, pop your dude in 10 mins, give him a scrub, back in for 10 mins scrub, and he's clean as hell.

And the biggest bonus by far is that its water soluble so you dont get that gungy gak that seems to appear when you rinse a dettol soaked mini in water.

Fun fact, dettol strips paint because it contains isopropyl alcohol.
no, no it doesnt melt the plastic.

I kind of like the colour of that dettol model as is. Kind of a stone tinted minotaur.

This looks like a great project, are you going to do the 'standard' painscheme for each chapter or try some more exotic methods?

Regarding Isopropyl alcohol, what concentration do you recommend @STG ?

What i've found with the Isopropyl is that it doesnt really do much to the primer.
Takes of the paints fine though.

Anyways here is a how the latest marine ended up turning out after i got him primed in white

Beyond starting with a fresh model i dont know how to fix this issue :(
But its a hell of a lot better than it was thats for sure

It's not great, but I think you'll be able to get away with this. What chapter is this guy by the way?

Were the issues you were having with priming to do with the weather? It's amazing to what degree the weather can affect it.

The weather affects spray can priming BIG TIME. I once sprayed something when it was like +27 outside. The paint ended up drying before it hit the model. And when it hit, it produced somewhat grainy/sandy texture.

Is that Vallejo primer?

When i lived in Malta i had the exact same problem.
I had to resort to spray in the bathroom in the shower stall

and no its GWS.
I've tried Vallejo and i dont like it

Well from what i've read you dont need a perfect cover. the primer is there to give the actual paint something to grab onto.
So a light covering like what i have above is all that is needed to keep details intact.

My only other alternative is to use an airbrush and a primer that way. but thats quite an expense just for priming models.

Yep, you're completely right. I mean all you'll be doing is painting over it, so the primer isn't too important as long as it's there.

Just be glad you didn't get dud primer. As in when I cracks and doesn't dry properly. I had a can of that, and even after stripping them in alcohol they were still covered in pigment (that I had to carfully brush off).

I can't wait to see all of these guys together, after you finish them all.
