Now I'm not much of a gambling man at the best of times, but when it comes to stuff like Poker, I can appreciate the skill involved - not just the mental mathematics to work out your chances round to round, but being able to spot tells and that. Things like Roulette, where it's all down to sheer, blind luck? Absolute mugs game at the best of times.

But online? Surely your far more likely to lose? It's all based on algorithms, and who knows what little tweaks and stacks are coded in. And with Poker, you're missing most of the skill, on account you don't (so far as I'm aware) get to see your opponents, which is surely half the fun of the gamble there?

But what about you? What is it that regularly leaves you scratching your noggin in confusion?

Taking your example one step further: "for fun" slots video games. You don't win real money, you just tap your phone screen and the animation spins the wheels for you and you win or lose (usually lose) some pretend money. I really don't get it.

That is quite spectacularly pointless, yes.

Oh. And stupidly expensive coffee.....usually served in an overly convoluted manner by some smug bearded hipster.

I don't get it. At all. Sure, I'm not a coffee drinker (triggers migraines, or at least it did circa 2003, not bothered to find out if it was a phase type thing) but surely no beverage drunk for a quick boost and a buzz should cost more than a quid?

I just don't understand how people could be so easily swayed to buy a particular brand of crap.

Abstract ads, that don't tell me owt about the product, or try to make ridiculous claims about what it can do for me (car and scent adverts are notoriously full of such nonsense)

But those that tell me why I should buy their product without stupid jingles etc, those I'm largely ok with

If you're just drinking it for a quick boost and a buzz, sure. But you could make the same statement about wine... Some of us drink coffee because we like it, and good coffee is better than bad coffee.


Although, to be fair, some of us also drink coffee because of the headaches and the turning-into-a-trembling-ball-of-sick when we stop, which is probably some sort of hint that we should cut down a little...
