Hey all, just a quick question about Deathwatch vets.

i just went over the codex and maybe i missed something or overlooked it but based on the wording i can equip a stormshield and a heavy, special weapon, ranged or melee weapon.

so for example i could have 5 vets, 4 with frag cannon and 1 with lets say a plasma gun and also give them all storm shields thus having a 3+/3++ vet squad?
this doesn't seem right but if so i can basically have a 3++ army?

again, maybe a stupid question but based on the wording it seems to work this way...

You can. It's not a particularly efficient thing to do, but you can. Despite the models Storm Shields don't actually prevent a model from using two-handed items as per the rules, they just prevent you from dual-wielding melee weapons.

Inefficient how? And I only ask because the codex by itself doesn't have a whole ton of options, so to me spamming vets would be the best bet and giving them all storm shields makes them extremely survivable marines. Plus you can have entire squads with plasma and melts with added heavy weapons...

I plan to ally them with grey knights (just to get NDK's) and/or imperial knights. Helps take away priority from my drop pod DW vets and with 3++ when they do get to them it will be somewhat of a struggle.

Is a grey knight term not about 33ppm base? And they 2+\5++...

And Grey Knights are not considered all that good. And come with Psychic powers.

True enough. I have yet to play either, although I have pretty much played/owned every other race so far.
I Have settled on orks but looking for a low model count second army.

I have a 5 man squad in drop pod with 4 Frag Cannons, 5 Storm Shields and a Necro phase sword.
It's like having a Sternguard Suicide Squad, that won't actually die.

Also a slight hindrance about the Storm Shields, you lose your extra CCA, even if the models have two melee weapons. However, if your using two-handed, you basically have no penalty as, you don't get it anyways.

But in my experience storm shields are almost always worth taking on any squad you expect to take a good amount of fire.

I like the versatility of being able to make a shooty 3++ or melee 3++ or mix and match.
ex: 5 vets 5 SS 4 frag cannons and 1 heavy hammer with a drop pod.

Legion of the Damned are all 3++ marines for far cheaper than 33ppm, yet they still die to lasguns just like every other marine.

You can totally have a 3++ army. If you're okay with paying 32pts for single-Wound T4 models. It's legal, it just isn't particularly effective.

(Space Marines spend a lot of time dying to things that aren't AP3. Storm Shields have no effect on the other guy killing them with lasguns, bolters, heavy bolters, scatter lasers, gauss flayers, flamers, shootas, pulse weapons, non-special CCWs, mortars, multi-lasers, deathspinners, heavy flamers, the fires of Tzeentch, or any other poor-AP weapon that happens to deal loads of hits.)

In other words, your opponent doesn't need a better gun to get through your armor. He just needs to shoot more bullets. 3++ on a 3+ model is a waste of points versus anything with AP4 or worse. In other words, a Storm Shield is situational. Maybe put one on the front guy to hopefully tank a couple of low AP shots, but not on all the guys.

Another important reason to have storm shields is if you're expecting to get into melee with a Monstrous Creature. Park a Storm Shield or two at the front of the squad and the guy at the back with the heavy thunderhammer may survive long enough to attack.
