Just got back from watching it. When the opening scene has the red ranger accidentally jerking off a steer instead of milking a cow, you know it's designed for an older crowd. The Zords were cool, Rita had some depth, Green Ranger was touched on, the racism joke of the 90s version was made fun of, and it had 5 seconds of the classic theme song. All in all, it was solid. It was better than Transformers, BvS, MoS, Iron Man 2&3; I'd say on par with the newest iteration of TMNT. If you liked that, you should be happy with it. Audiences seemed to love it, critics disliked it. I don't understand the critic hate though. It was solid.

The only thing I'm wondering is how I managed to never hear about this movie until today. I want to see it, now.

Most of the critics I saw seemed generally surprised by it. They thought the core cast was surprisingly good and had a good chemistry with each other. The criticism seemed to stem from the fact that the initial part of the film was a somewhat poignant and well done look at teens growing up (and gaining super powers) but after the first 2/3rds they put on suits and everything goes CGI and hammy; it seemed they felt it was an issue of different attitudes toward it and they didn't really mesh well. Still I saw two reviews that said it probably wouldn't be an issue generally, and that most audiences would still enjoy the film.

You and I must have different standards for "didn't suck."


EDIT: You may be right though. It may actually be excellent. But you'd have to get me drunk and then taze me repeatedly before you could get enough people to force me to attend...because Power Rangers...

I'm tempted by it.

I've got a soft spot for Power Rangers, despite it being after my time (I was an 80's Sprog, 90's Teen...)

When, I saw the preview I was totally surprised when it ended up being Power Rangers. It actually made me kind of want to see it.

Glad to hear it! I grew up on the original Power Rangers, so seeing this come out gets me revved up!

In what world is any Iron Man movie worse than the Michael Bay TMNT abominations?
When you said it was better than Transformers & Iron Man 2 & 3, I was like "Alright, gonna see in theatres"
Then you contradicted yourself by saying it was on par with the newest TMNT, which is a 'once was enough' Redbox affair...at best.

the 95 mighty morphing power rangers movie was actually pretty good - granted I was 9 years old when I saw it. This one though - I am sure that it is going to be terrible - as even the trailer looked terrible.

Personally, I thought the new TMNT got a bad rap. I liked it. I hated the Disnification of IM3. And IM2 just took three IM villains and smashed em into one. RDjr was awesome in all, but the movies were crap around him. IM1 is still one of the best Marvel movies. But fine...different tastes and all. It's better than Amazing Spidey 2 and the first hulk, DD, Electra, all FF movies X-men Apoc and Last Stand.

To be fair, a documentary about toothpicks could have held water against that line up.

I might have been willing to see this movie if it had been made by Michael Bay.

Elizabeth Banks is a strong motivator to see the movie, even though I doubt she gets to show of her humor chops much.

I don't know if anyone else had this problem, but I felt some of the scenes dragged on far too long. Many of the more emotional scenes could have been a minute or two shorter, especially considering how little of the movie actually had power rangers in it.

There is no doubt about it...this is an origins movie. Which...with characters like Spidey getting multiple origin movies...it's unnecessary. These characters got an origin once in 1991 ('92?). And it was cheesy beyond belief. Them getting a serious origins movie, but still seeing the familiar names from childhood...it was a good feeling. Felt like Power Rangers "grew up" with me; not like I was watching a children's movie. Although there were the couple potty jokes!

Also...Trini is Hispanic, right? They did away with a Native American ranger (original Red) and replaced with a Hispanic ranger (Trini).

In the original Power Rangers show, the Yellow Ranger Trini was cast as a Hispanic Actress, but she asked for more money or something and had to be let go. They then recast the Asian Trini we all know.
The original Red Ranger, Jason, is a white guy, not Native American.

The thing with the first Yellow Ranger being Asian and Black Ranger being African American was a coincidence, but it was made obvious when they swapped for new characters and the YR was African American and the BR was Asian. Like we wouldn't notice the switcheroo.

I think the whitewashing reference from earlier in the thread is refereeing to Rita, who was played by an Asian actress in the show, but now Elizabeth Banks. Although since the character of Rita is not Asian, I don't know if you can consider this white-washing.

Its a joke, based on the fact that the original Power Rangers show just took the scenes of the Power Rangers fighting from a Japanese Show and dubbed over them with the Western Cast.

Actually, it's really not. The Major is a mass-produced cyborg. She is indeterminate ethnicity. The rest of the cast is Asian which makes sense as Togusa isn't cyberorized, Bauto is partial, Aramaki isn't cyberorized... etc.

What has me more worried then is scarjo a good major is the fact the plot looks like the typical hollywood bs " you built me to be a bad ass killing machine and stole my past..im going to find it now" aka they will take all the cool action scene's from the movies and TV shows and fill it in with that generic bs recycled plot.

Yep living in Japan i have seen the originals and seeing all the asian (or most) being removed and being replaced by Americans and fighting monsters in Japanese landscapes.
I want to see it but i am not sure if it will be released here in the Japanese cinema, Bandai licensing and all that.

I loved it. Like others I was expecting it to be terrible, and the early trailers for it didn't look promising, but I was surprised. I'm still not fond of what they did to Goldar and the Megazord design is still iffy, but at the end I didn't really care.

Also, in regards to the spoiler'd bit: I lol'd. Did NOT see that coming.

Sadly it's not getting very good reviews, though. Only 47% on Rotten Tomatoes last I checked, total take so far seems to be a little over $60million. Feels like Pacific Rim all over again, I always like the ones that everyone else hates.

It's actually making me rewatch the original PR show from the 90s. I wish it got a non-cheesy update in TV format!! A PG13 version like the movie would be awesome.

Im hoping it does well enough to warrant a sequel atleast.
But, hearing how bad it did, and seeing it second weekend and what the theater was like, makes me unhopeful.
It is honestly for people that grew up with the original show, with them keeping EVERYTHING that was in it. They even had the ZEO CRYSTAL
Yeah it was updated, but it was a good update,

One for when it comes on TV for me i think. For I've thing, apparently they don't even get into their suits for the last third or so of the film.
