Whilst I dont think 8th is going to be an uber sea change in rules design and implementation, its certainly shaping up to be a bit different.
What will you miss from previous editions thats gone the way of the dodo in 8th?
For me it'll probably be the warlord charts. Whilst I hated the randomness of them and absolutely horrible rules for some (Nid carniverous forest option ), they did add a level of excitement and nuance if you got a decent one on your warlord.
I also really liked some of the maelstrom missions (assuming these go dodo).

I will miss (and sort of already do) getting to be the self-righteous newbie convinced every rules change is the end of the world, instead of the grizzled veteran sitting around explaining to everyone that yes, rules change, and after this next change 40k is going to be exactly as screwed up as it was before and for the exact same reasons.
I also miss having a sense of consistency, of having a visual/logical idea of how big things were and what they did, rather than the endless parade of arbitrary numbers that's ended up with GW deciding that Space Marines just aren't special enough anymore. I miss contrast, how once upon a time Space Marines were big/strong/tough/bada** because they were and we had a bunch of smaller/squishier bada**es around to prove it, instead of GW telling us "these guys are awesome, take our word for it!" and then moving on to describe an endless parade of bigger and bigger things.
I miss restrictions, back when 48" was long range, almost nothing could move and fire at full effectiveness, and you had to plan a turn or two ahead to figure out how to kill something instead of being able to shoot the entire table with your entire army every turn. I miss morale, back before everything became immune to it and Leadership tests were relevant instead of "well, technically you need to...". I miss the age when the developers assumed that players were capable of kitbashing instead of introducing arbitrary restrictions based on the models they made.
I miss non-random army selection, when you could take a psyker knowing you'd have useful powers, when you didn't have random tables with about a 30% chance of giving you anything useful stuck onto your leader just so you can grumble when your opponent gets Conqueror of Cities and you don't. I miss asymmetric missions, where the two sides had distinct objectives and handicaps to support it. I miss the days when White Dwarf had rules and conversions in it instead of the constant refrain of "everything we do is perfect, buy our stuff!" that pervades the latest incarnations. I miss reading about WHFB naval battle reports with a homemade expansion and cardstock ships.
So I guess on one hand I miss the days when 40k was the game I wanted to play, instead of requiring me to sit down and patch it up after the fact. But the world's moved on, most people aren't pining for 4e, and in the past few years I've discovered patching 40k up after the fact is kind of entertaining, so what the heck.

1. Templates. I know these slowed down tournament play, and I appreciate the change, but for casual these are a blast to use. Accidental pun. 2. Formations. Aside from a couple formations being bad for competitive play, it was neat having all this flexibility when creating an army. Lack of a low cost detachment with a Lord of War is concerning. Not all LoW are overpowered, like Kaldor Draigo. 3. Psychic Powers. I can't say for certain what will happen, but I really liked the flexibility when creating a list with psykers. Because i had so many powers to choose from, i could make a list, go to the store, and play 3-4 different armies, taking different powers for the scenario. They could have easily balanced this phase without completely replacing it. I would have preferred spells being easier and faster, you get to pick which ones you want, and they're very easy to manifest with incredibly low perils chance. Then, just fundamentally balance them out. (For example, Invisibility gives a +2 cover save mod. Not game breaking.)

I will slightly miss formations since some of them were enjoyable.
But honestly looking back one of the reasons I enjoyed them was because some of them fixed issues that could've been fixed by actually balancing the unit. Such as Forgefiends and Maulerfiends getting the Warp Smiths BS/WS because for some reason all Daemonic Vehicles were required by law to be stuck at 3.

Warlord charts? Don't recall having heard anything on these, but if they go away, it'll be one less random roll, won't miss it.

See formations are loathed because a troublesome few. But it's helpful if you want to run a thematic army in a fun way. Now you have to play unbound. Melissia wrote:What is there to miss? Gotten nothing new since third for Sisters, and Orks and Guard have gone downhill since at least fifth. This is an excellent point - 8th edition will bring up new stuff for everyone - but in terms of core mechanics, will you not miss anything?

I don't miss much since its been such a long time where so many armies are just useless (dark eldar, nids, imperial guard, orks, blood angels, harlequins) and frankly that's not fun for anyone.
I do miss waaaaaaay back. More specifically the 3rd edition ork codex. Best mob rule. Armor shredding choppas. Lootas with LOOTED weapons. Vehicles from any codex. Nazdreg! Stikkbombs did things. Orks on foot were good.
Just give me a fraction of that for 8th edition. Please.

I still miss my 4th edition daemon codex. Most people dismissed it as weak. Those who knew it's strengths feared it. It was very risk-reward, and not an auto win. That book took skill, and did major damage. It released at the end of 4th, but was designed for 5th. And it was gold. I lament its passing. I'd like to see the return of risk-reward armies, balanced armies, and high defense but low damage armies for attrition. Offering options of each style will be good in my book!!

Probably the change in morale rules. Running swarm-style units seems only to be a burden as the morale basically doubles the causalities you're taking from all sources. Seems extremely poorly thought out. Would have been happier to see the old morale rules, just with the loss of ATSKNF, which was, IMO, the main thing breaking morale in general.

But the very base mechanics of 5-7th werent that bad. Its the codices and suppliments and super rules that became bloat for me :(
