Thanks LTMW ,

Well early yesterday I decided to do a bit of catch up on the Warhammer Underworlds Warbands.

Ordered them early this week, and if I waited till Tuesday to pick them up it would have earned me another $10 in store credit from double point tuesday, but I have 5 days off I need a row. Unfortunately they didn’t get the power unbound decks in so I had to also go to Miniaturemarket to get that, and also grabbed the card sleeves (I think I still need more ) also not pictured is a card box 660 count. I was going to buy a Hate forged Titan at MM too, but they were out temporarily , oh well I’ve got enough to do for a while

Now to unbox, assemble, sleeve, paint

Edit: assembled all 6 warbands,

Went to sleeve the cards and got the wrong size sleeves .

Not me man , I’ve mellowed even more and know my skill level, so mold lines really can’t bring my models much lower .

youwashock wrote:Wow. Quite the influx. Sorry about the sleeves.

Yeah, it was a significant chunk of what I was missing, but season three is right around the corner, so had to get going.

Made another trip to MM and exchanged the sleeves, all sets are now sleeved and ready for action. It’s a hidden cost of this game, season 1 had 400+ cards, season two has 500+ cards, that’s not counting the leader expansion or the Unbound power expansions. Also picked up a box of Zombicide zombie dogs, they have a sale going on, so 20 figs for $10 was a no brainer.

Anyway, really lazy day today, chilled with my wife and finished the newest season of Madame Secretary on Netflix . This week we are having a major heat wave here, so any outdoor work will be early mornings or late a time night. Great time to have a few days off .

Theophony,

What about a brown wash, will let the model stay red, while adding definition and making it look less clean and more Orkish?

Thanks CB, you are right on the money with the brown wash, see below.

They are very characterful, and why’s I chose them to do first out of the six I had picked up.

Well as CB had suggested I added an Agrax wash, but very spot washed instead of all over.

More to do, but need to get on with a second figure to make sure I can pull this band and scheme off.

Wash definitely helped! I would pick out the little armor "patches" and make them a different color to break up the main armor color as you move forward. Just my two cents.

That's... certainly vibrant! Yeah, the subtle washing has worked well. Maybe a couple of spots of blue, so they end up like Dutch football hooligans (or cans of that most notorious of Scottish, drinks, Irn Bru...)

Precision and control are two things that I have not bothered in learning, so bucketfuls is my usual attempt.

Definitely will try that out, I have a hard time doing ramshackle work, which I think is cornerstone to Orcs, or whatever they are called now.

JoshInJapan wrote:The red/orange armor on that orc really pops. I assume you're planning to go back over and add some battle-damage/exposed metal?

They ain’t Orcs until they’ve got good dents and scrapes, just want to get the squad to the same level before the true dirt gets tossed.

I did the blue and orange on my chaos Bloodbowl team, so I’m a bit Leary to repeat it here, not exactly sure which direction to go though just yet.

Well got a couple hours in this morning after getting the first layer of orange done last night.

The other members of the squad are almost up to Basha’s Level of completeness now. Still kicking around the other color to be used. Basha did get a purple tongue as a spot color, that might make the cut and get used more, though one of the other thoughts I had was a dark green on some armor panels along with white which is use different on the bosses cape. Still unsure, so I might grab some of my Mantic Orcs and do some tests there before going too much further.

Theophony,

Yes, a little touch of metallic is spots and around the edges on the orange armour like JoshInJapan was suggesting will finish them nicely.

Definitely in the plans, thanks, just trying to sort the secondary/patch armor color.

Initially I was thinking purple for the accent color for the boyz, but looking through my options I didn’t like the purples I have, and not really looking at buying more colors . Then I figured the axe head decorations should be green to symbolize Gorkamorka the AOS version of the Orc god. The dark green is looking promising, and I think I’ll do white checks(yes I’m about to get stupid ) and dags on parts of the armor.

Once that is done then I’ll damage them all up with some metals and rusty bits. Not sure about blood though .

On another line I tried something new with the animal pelt on the bosses shoulder. Primed white, agrax wash over 2/3 of the center and then Nuln oil over the middle 1/3 again. Once that was relatively dry I painted on apothecary white over all of it. I kind of like the effect of an Arctic Wolf sort of hide.

What do you all Think?

Also trying to come up with a cloak color. Don’t really want to do red. Should I continue my insanity and make it the torn flag of some human kingdom they have wrecked? Maybe a pale blue/turquoise sort of color? Or go oldschool and try and do an old Empire flag from before the end of the old world.

It is different from the regular Ork brown hides.

I would avoid red for the cloak as your orange is already the bulk of the model. I would go for a contrast to the orange armour...but I think blue or turquoise would be too bright and cheerful for an Ork.

My two cents,

CB

Having a trophy banner for a cape is a pretty cool idea. Also like the idea of checks and such on the armor.

Yeah, Red was definitely out, and for a leader I didn’t want to do standard brown, so that’s why I started to think of the turquoise color. Maybe I’ll do a little empire research as I’m not even sure if Sigmar uses banners.

youwashock wrote:Having a trophy banner for a cape is a pretty cool idea. Also like the idea of checks and such on the armor.

Checks are like obligatory for Orcs, just need to get my hand steady for it.

Well as what usually happens I get sidetracked by my own desires to buy more . I’ve been eyeballing the Wrath of Kings line for some models for a long time, and Miniaturemarket’s retail store has them all at a time least 50% off (except maybe the newest releases like the Gotha Knights). I swung by there this morning and they had a “Boardgames by the pound sale” tons of their regular clearance games being sold at $4 per pound of weight. I saw a few things, but luckily I resigned myself in from buying stuff for another Kings of War army . But I did buy one Wrath of Kings model, which is still too expensive for my usual buy, but he fits with the Orcs in my mind.

Enter the Hate Forged Titan.

Oh he’s a big one all right. 70+mm tall without a base (roughly 3” for us using an antiquated measuring system)

He’s sprueless plastic, which while good left some gaps, first time gap filling a model here , so ignore the poor workmanship as primer will hide the sins.

Zombicide Minotaur for scale reference.

Figure if I ever paint up my Kings of War horde of Orcs then he can fill in a small a giant and will fit well with all my boar riding Orcs.
I tempted to paint him up nice, but then add on the white cut lines and tattoos saying ribs, bacon, fat back, loin, and other terms you see on those butcher shop sign saying showing you what part of the pig the meat comes from.

I think pale turquoise or yellow for the cape would look really good with the orange/green you've got (with the fur a nice rich brown)... If it's supposed to represent a flag, are you thinking you'd freehand some emblem on it? Because that would be pretty badass.

Also, I love that titan model (I've considered using him as a proxy for the Arena Rex Wendigo model) but I thought he came in resin, not HIPS. How sharp are the details?

I really like that pig giant. Great find.

For the banner/cape, it might be easiest to use a large transfer of some sort over your chosen base color. Microsol (or some equivalent) would get it to hug all those curves and folds, and using the tranfer would save you a lot of the heartache of trying to freehand the cape.

Some major progress since I was last here. Nice work on the minotaur, spurring me on to get my entry done. Jealous of your underworld haul, been tempted to do the same myself, particularly with season one as who knows how long they will last with the next one coming. Orcs look great with the orange armour. With regards to the cloak, I think I would just go with a black/grey - you already have a bright orange armour and green skin, another strong colour could be too much. Black would contrast well without competing with the other colours. Could highlight with bluegrey for cold contrast with warm orange

I’d say it would definitely work for an alternate wendigo, I’m not a fan of the Wendigo model by Arena Rex, it rates as high as the tiger in my book. I just got home to check the box, it is plastic according to the contents blurb. Very much like the Sedition Wars plastic with the pegs for assembly, but much nicer details.

I do have MicroSol and MicroSet, but I think I’m going to try my hand at some freehand work, just to keep pushing myself.

Glad to have you back , I see what you mean with the colors, but since he is not a fashionista. The cape would be a conquered banner more than a fashion accessory, so I think drawing attention to it would be alright.

On the cloak I would definitely do an old-school empire flag. There was such variety and it would be a nice nod to the old world. You could go as flamboyant and clashing as you want with something like Averland or Middenheim
