Subject: Myth by Megacon Games being sold - Update
PsychoticStorm wrote: I am not sure, if they bundled or that no other property they did was considered worthy.
Personally, only their Myth IP is worthwhile and while they have damaged it, it is still worth something, especially since the sculpts are presentable.
The rest of the update states some thing that have been said from their backers including me a few times in the past, they cannot run a business, no focus, no PR, no coordination and too much inexperience.
I am not sure they can go back into been a development studio, our industry is not computer games industry were you can revert from publisher to developer, because there is not much demand for developer studios, Individual game designers, sure especially if they have good selling products under them.
I honestly do not think they have any and the reviews show it, they also have burned too much goodwill recklessly (I imagine one of the reasons why they do not want to keep on as publishers, their name is tainted).
Alpharius wrote: All indications are that it is 'just' MYTH - but really that's just speculation on our part as of now!
That email sounds like everything is on the block. Does CMoN have a sci-fi property? I mean getting MERCS could be more important than get MYTH to them.
Anything would be better than getting MERCs, too simplistic setting, illogical setting for games, unfit artwork and sculpts, the redesign alone to become worthy of a professional IP and wargames/ boardgames title would be enouph to spend on a new IPand if I was in their position, I would invest in a new IP.
They have dark age though and their Xenosyft IP that they recently tied to the Dark age IP, so they have a solid sci fi/ post apocalyptic IP in their portfolio anyway and they spoke of the possibility of a sci fi Zombiside in the future.
Glad I dumped it all when I did. This is surely the year many game companies die off.
I really don't see CMoN buying this. They really don't need it. They have tons of fantasy and Dark age/Xeno is in the Scifi space. Dark age is growing more and more (still garbage distribution) and I don't think they want to cut it down any with a different scifi game

Not here. I gave up on MegaCON after the fiasco of the first campaign. I didn't trust them enough to go "all-in" a second time with Journeyman so I only pledged for the revised rulebooks and some miniatures. I got the rulebooks but, I expect, I'll never see the miniatures.
I'm not usually very Zen but I'm okay with that. The aggravation of some missing minis isn't really worth the amount I invested the second time around. I feel for those like Alpharius and Psychotic Storm who did pledge a lot. My cynical, non-Zen pledging self served me well this time.

I still think Myth had the best tabletop/board game/whatever-qualifier-you-want quality miniatures of all the many kickstarters I've participated in, slightly cartoon-y aesthetic notwithstanding.
And equally, the deck-building/miniature combat game is a promising concept sadly hamstrung by poor implementation.
And the art is pretty great.
But yeah, it's a property with problems, to say the least.

I for one will not miss the clowns at MegaCon. I limit my bad feelings to the backers they've screwed over. An average houseplant has better business sense and communication skills than these guys. They tried to juggle the Kickstarter pyramid, robbing Peter to pay Paul, all the while being rude when they could be bothered to talk to their backers at all. Good riddance. The industry can do without companies like this.

There are successful publishers who are teams of 3 or less, they just understand the need to be publishers and not designers and hire external work.
Megacon simply ignored constructive criticism, warnings about repeating past mistakes and stick to do all the work with their core designers when clearly they were not fit, for example art and sculpt of myth was clearly unsuitable for mercs giving the sculpts we got.

I would say almost everything, beyond the really bad casting, shallow detail, or no detail at all (keizai waza guns look like cardboard cutouts) and the sculpting detail is phenomenally bad for a sci fi game, yes, their sculptor hit the nail with Myth since the fantasy cartoony approach Myth has is his style, but his style was unsuited for mercs, at least without doing them as cartoony as Myth was, something they did not do.
It was mentioned to them several times they need to hire an external sculptor and art designer if they want to modernise their sci fi line in something that can compete in the modern market, but they went for the two founders, either to be cheaper or because of ego.
In any case it was one of the factors Mercs was received as bad as it was, along with the promise that the sculpts would be better casting quality than what Myth character models were and ended up worse than minion level casting of Myth.

The plastic MERCS minis are great. What is your criticism of them?
They went from $10+ metals to ~$3 restics with the usual restic caveats. The designs themselves are still the same stylized, dynamic sculpts even if the detail isn't as crisp.
Edit: it sounds from your next post like you just dislike their style. That's fine, but please don't claim it's objectively bad. As for the material, we're on the wrong side of 2010 for that argument. Welcome to the era of plastic. You can keep your boutique metals...because you probably won't be able to sell them.

The restock copies of the old metal minis came out ok but the new minis designed for the KS were rather awful. The CCC squad looks fine but the EU squad is shameful, disturbingly spindly legs and berets on top of helmets with soft shallow detail throughout. That team was an objectively poor design that doubled down on the ugly by not being suitable for the material either. Some of my pledge will eventually get painted but some will never leave the closet of shame unless I can find somebody who wants them (if I can pass them on without feeling like I've swindled someone).

I do not like the sculpting, it fits a cartoony style aesthetic that Myth has, but Mercs do not, if they had done mercs cartoony as Myth is I would not complain, but since they persisted in going pseudo realistic, they should have gone for a sculptor that was competent to deliver that and not the sculptor who happened to be one of the three founders.
As for the minis?
This is a great mini? since when?

For PVC, Mercs miniatures were decent enough in terms of flash/warpage. And I'm comparing this to PP minis. Not a lot of detail, but then the sculptors style doesn't seem to lend itself to a lot of detail either judging by the original sculpts and myth.
For sculpts, it's pretty much the same style as they had for MERCs before they redid everything in PVC. I'm not really sure why you're complaining about the sculpts. Did you not have an idea of what MERCs looked like before that?

I have the beret guys and I like them. I think of them as Genoshans, basically comic book elite normals, which is the vibe they give me. If you have plastics for the other factions, I'd be interested in a trade.
Psychotic, they are a cartoony style. Specifically, Anerican comic book style with poses straight out of How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, with Kirbyish details to match.
Yeah, the gun is a bit shallow, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. I don't see anything in that mini that would keep me from buying the faction box at discount price (well, Black Friday prices).
quite a few factions did not exist and as it was pointed out to them, it was their opportunity to start new go to modern standards instead of keeping a decade old out of fashion and quality standard, but that old product was more detailed than this.
In any case they managed to deliver a far inferior product than the product they were supposedly upgrading from.
I am sorry Alpharius I typed that before your request.

MERCs is owned by the same company. Is that game not related? How is a discussion of MegaCon's failure to move their primary brand not related to MegaCon's failure as a company necessitating the sale of their secondary brand?

Except that they're pretty intrinsically linked together, you can't discuss the fate of MYTH without discussing MERCS, they're the 2 core properties of the (very small) company. If MYTH is being sold because Megacon Games doesn't want to be a producer then that has a heck of a lot to do with MERCS being produced by the same company. And since Megacon is just as mum about MERCS future as they are MYTH (moreso, even) then all we can do is speculate based on what we do know. The fate of MYTH is the fate of MERCS.
My personal feelings for the MERCS plastics was they were fine for what they were and I got my money's worth from the RECON board games, but that was NOT the common reaction to them from the people that pledged. MERCS 2.0 did not do well at all since the company was concentrating all their efforts into the second MYTH KS. No support, no buzz, no way to cross those new shiny RECON boardgame models into the tabletop game since you still needed to buy the (expensive) hardbound rulebook and card decks. It strikes me that Megacon just doesn't have the manpower necessary to create a game AND produce it AND promote it. Putting the rescources into making new updates to the games without having the power to follow through with either caused both MERCS and MYTH to flounder.
