Re: sculpting vs. decals, personally, I like using decals for line troops and using sculpted icons for veterans/characters, painted like they're metal badges or w/e rather than decals as "painted" insignia.

Also, there are certainly those with preference towards only one or the other.

I don't think that the redundancy is an issue (since they can be for slightly different markets, so much as it's odd that they'd keep making redundant iterations while some armies still don't have a first.

I love that intercessors can now carry stalker pattern boltguns. I've always loved the concept of those and it's great that they're mainstream now.

I don't care either way since I hate molded badges and decals and prefer the freehand look. That said, I would rather they give others more variety rather then waste time and resources making redundant things so early on. ESPECIALLY when they already made perfectly serviceable upgrade packs a year ago. Literally the interchangeable things on the primaris marines are the pads and heads and sarges combat weapon. So what was the point? I actually like the old one more lol.

Cool but strange since their whole schtick is using next gen gear, which yet again puzzles me that sternguards special issue rounds make a bog standard bolter better then a bolt rifle lol.

Yeah, I'd paint my logos if I had a simpler one, but after painting one Astral Claws multicolor big cat head, man, I was out- learned how to convincingly apply decals before finishing another Marine.

I'm from the future. The future of space

As far as conversions go, I'm looking forward to a ton of plasma weapon bits showing up on eBay for super cheap. Same goes for some cool bolt weapons.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

I'm guessing (and that's all it is.. a guess) that the weapons will me modular like the Primaris Captain's bolt weapon where you have a single central core weapon and then the various tiny bits will add on to it. If that is the case, the bits that go to ebay will be pretty useless.

I'm pretty sure that the Hellblasters and the Intercessors boxes are gonna be the same (They are literally the same guy with a different weapon) so probably many, many people is gonna have extra plasma options. Or extra primaris bolter rifles.
Of course maybe isn't like this and they are actually two different boxes. 10 bodys with a ton of heads and 60 weapons? Maybe is a little overkill even for a double-kit.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

I really doubt that. I suspect hellblasters and intercessors will each get their own box and each fig will instead have three weapons options each to take up the space on the sprues even if those weapons are just small parts swaps. Having 20 core weapons (10 bolt and 10 plasma) and 60 add on bits in a 10 man box sounds impossible to me.

The Intercessors have a stalker bolt rifle, not the same stalker bolter that Deathwatch have access to. As for the Sternguard, it says that their special ammo takes extensive, painstaking craftsmanship (which is why it's only given to veteran marksmen) - so they have higher performing weapons, but not for reasons that can easily be mass-produced.

So I just wanted to point out that some of GW's new marketing is working...

I play Orks, Guard, and 3 different kinds of loyalist power armour... Space Wolves, Dark Angels and Deathwatch.

None of these are Vanilla marines, so therefore I'm not really interested in Codex: Vanilla Marines (although if an electronic gamer's edition comes out with just the rules in a month or three, at a reduced pricepoint, I'll consider getting that)

I do like the look of some of the new Primaris models, but was holding out on buying any of the new kit, because I don't want to have to buy a full C:SM just to use one or two units.

Then I realised that the new models come with rules in the box! With the box kits, and the downloadable pdf on the website, I can add units of Primaris to my SW, DA and DW even though I only have the Index at this point. Hooray!

So I just ordered a set of Reivers, a set of Aggressors and a Redemptor Dreadnought. That's 3 boxes they wouldn't have sold otherwise.

I am a slave to the machine, their tactics are working, moar plastic crack for the plastic crack god!!

You gotta give us a Black Templar Primaris upgrade set, just one upscaled tabard, that's all I ask, maybe just one chained chainsword, please I'm here a humble servant, our crusades cannot continue on stunty legs. Show us thine light.

It's also worth notin g that they're billing the codex as something space wolf etc players can use for primaris rules, points values etc "out of the box" noting what rules are vanilla marine specific etc in the codex. so GW is clearly trying to position the codex as something ALL space marine players can use "for the time being" they're really trying to market stuff well that way. it's great although it takes a definate adjustment in thinking from the old days of "this is my codex, I have to use my codex, even if it's 2 editions out of date and someone else is paying half the points for a better version of the same stuff as me"

I know, right? I was planning to buy a Repulsor for my Dark Angels, which is already like $80 (US), now I need to get a $50 codex for my Chaos boys as well if I want to keep them current. I've given the new vanilla SM codex a miss for now. Too many good releases, too close together. Good thing I'm not married...

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 21 | Current main painting project: Warhammer 40k Leviathan set

It's the little things. I was tremendously excited to discover that while the two gun arm options for the Redemptor share one, critical part...they put two of them in the kit, making it very easy to magnetize and have swappable gun arms for it.

It has occurred to me.. Between the index, the data cards, the data slates (that come with the boxed sets), and the free pointed play pdf.. you don't actually need to buy a codex..

And in case you play Astra Militarum or AdMech don't buy Index Imperium II anymore if you only need it for these, they should be next after Death Guard

Does anyone know if the Repulsor will use Land Raider or Rhino doors in any capacity? Will the Dreadnought Sarcophagus take the same lids as the old ones? Trying to figure out how much of the old vehicle upgrade options for chapters might possibly carry over.

Given the size of the Primaris Rhino doors would be way to small. LR doors could be a possibility though.

Same width, but primaris dread has a taller sarcophagus.
