Subject: wargames factory greatcoat troopers... what to use for command?
I'd say either Veterans or Scions (though they work fine as standard guardsmen, too). I'd probably lean towards Scions due to their masks.
I have an alternative possibility though - special weapon troops. Have these guys be the ones carrying the plasmaguns, flamers or whatever in each squad.

You're not. If you're worried about your opponent using 'fake' rules, you're having fun the wrong way. This hobby isn't about rules. It's about buying Citadel miniatures.

I bought a bunch and used them interchangeably as Guardsman and Veterans. Just make sure to paint the line on the shoulder pads a distinct colour for special weapon holders - most of my opponents couldn't tell the difference between the guns without them being as overblown as in 40k.

Another "these are my standard line infantry" guard player here. With the new rules I'm probably going to be fielding a lot as conscripts, but prior to this I'd been running the guys with the pictured helmets as guardsmen and the more armored-front-looking helmets as vets. I used the special weapons as stand-ins for Guard special weapons (flamer and grenade launcher are obvious, the long barrel with the cooling vanes as plasma, and the stubby one as melta) and upgraded the rifles with scopes and extended barrels for snipers. I recommend getting the heavy weapons boxes as well because they have good equivalents as well as officers.

Couldn't you just paint the special weapons in more vivid colours?

If you want a genestealer cult, shouldn't you stick genestealer heads on them?

You're probably right, but I was short of special weapons and this one looked the most plasmagun-y to me.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I'm replacing the standard arms with laspistol and chainsword arms from ig but i thought command would need more.
I don't know if it helps, but the greatcoat troopers heavy weapons box comes with 2 command models.

Thanks vipoid, i didn't know that. Someone told me not long ago that for some reason the scale is off oin the heavy weapons box. Do you know if that id's true at all?
Selym, those mt may be a good idea. I do like them a lot.

I've taken some pictures for you so that you can judge for yourself.
Spoiler:
Normal Greatcoat Trooper, Heavy Weapon Greatcoat Trooper and Captain:
Normal Greatcoat Trooper and Captain:
Normal Greatcoat Trooper and Captain (different angle):
Normal Greatcoat Trooper and Heavy Weapon Greatcoat Trooper:
(I know the quality isn't amazing, but hopefully it's good enough for a size-comparison.)
The normal greatcoat trooper looks about the same size as the one sitting at the heavy weapon. The captain model does look a bit smaller but I can't tell if that's more to do with his pose, lack of armour and the fact that the greatcoat trooper has his own base (which I glued to the proper base, instead of removing).

wow, thats great vipoid, thanks for the extra work.
they are an odd bunch... the commander is a little off for some reason and youre right, its a little hard to put my finger on why.
im not removing my molded base either. i didnt think it was worth the effort.

For what it's worth, I quite like the commander sculpts and if nothing else they do stand out quite well from the rank and file guys.
Yeah, it seemed like a lot of hassle for not a lot of gain. I think once the model is based (or even just has both bases painted black) it won't really be noticeable.
