Just wondering if most people aim for a battalion or prefer to use the other detachments more?
I've found that the more fun lists are built without a battalion, necrons being so cost prohibitive a battalion limits the options. I've been running vanguard and spearhead detachments a lot, and adding warriors into them if I feel they are needed. What are all the other armies like?

Personally ive fielded Spearhead and Outrider detachments as thats where my army shines. Usually might add in a Battalion just for the extra CP but only running minimum squads. Yhis is mostly due to models being so expensive to obtain financially because Sisters.
If i had the models id consider running more battalion and maybe even brigade.

Spearhead, Vanguard and Outrider are seeing a lot of use with me and my Aledari armies. Ironically I think Harlequins are the ones that get best use out of the standard Battalion there.

Looks to me like it depends on the army. With my Orks I'll be fielding a Battalion or even a Brigade for the CP, Sewer Rats is a good down in Case of Death and allows me re-rolls for Lootas, Mek Gunz and such. Whereas my Address mech will probably be using Patrol and Spearhead most of the time.

In three games of 8th I have used:
Vanguard/Outrider (Ultra) 2k points
Battalion (Ultra) 2k points
Brigade (AdMech) 2600 points

Personally I think the Battalion will be the go-to for many armies simply because it is relatively easy to fill the requirements and get 3 CP. Vanguard/Outrider/Spearhead will be the next most used because some armies like to build to specialties, plus they combo ok with a Battalion. The Brigade might see some action mainly with armies that have cheap units (like Orks or Tau or Astra Militarum), but I actually managed to make a Dark Angels Brigade list, even though it was laughably bad. For those players who want to splash a LOW into their force, the Superheavy Auxiliary will probably be their best friend. Plenty of players might want to play just one Imperial Knight or Roboute Guilliman or whatever, so GW did us a solid and made a way to do just that with no penalty, unlike the auxiliary that lets you take another force org choice for -1 CP. The Patrol looks okay for smaller games, but not getting CP really sucks.
TL; DR: I think it's going to depend on the army. For me, I usually try to run a Battalion and one other detachment, as I want as many CP as I can get without gimping my army to do it.

So far, the Battalion is definitely my go-to detachment (outside of really low point games).
My Necrons usually want at least 2 HQs (typically an Overlord and a Destroyer Lord) and I've no issue with running 3+ units of Warriors or Immortals.
With my IG, my army fits perfectly into Battalions. See, I generally adopt a sort of pseudo-platoon design - with each battalion having 2 Company Commanders, 1 Commissar, 3 Infantry Squads (2 with heavy weapons and plasmaguns, 1 screening unit with a flamer) and a single HWS. I'll usually have about one of these per 500pts. Whilst obviously able to support each other, these 'platoons' can act as independent units on the first - with each encompassing all the support elements it needs. And of course, this is just the core of my army - there are still plenty of open slots should I wish to add an extra HQ (like St. Celestine), more support units, more special weapons (like MT Command Squads with plasma), more infantry squads or anything else that takes my fancy. [For those wondering, no, my IG army does not go first. ]
The Brigade is also a consideration but the mandatory FA units are what is stumping me at the moment. I could use Sentinels, but I don't think they belong in this sort of army. Then again, since we can now include stuff from other armies, I might see if SoB or such have some more useful units to offer.
The exception would probably be with my DE - because I despise every single one of their HQs, and the idea of taking more than one is about as appealing to me as jabbing rusty nails into my flesh.

Battalion and spearhead, so far with my Chaos.
Brigade feels like you're giving the other guy first turn, making some unit sacrifices, and having superfluous command points. I think its best reserved for very specific builds.

With the new Errata allowing Orks to heartily abuse the understrength unit rule to take 4 point HQ's (0 point with forgeworld stuff) among other single model units, looks like full on Brigades will be possible.

Patrol for small games, which the local store is configured for right now.
Battalion for more normal sized games with my Imperial Guard, multiple Outrider detachments for my Sisters of Battle.

I can second all of this. Spearhead with a combo of Exorcists and Pen Engines are where we shine. Though in saying that i'm considering trying the Outrider one on Thursday and packing it out with Seraphim and popping the AoF to get them into Turn one combat along side St Celstine.

Understrength Unit Rule. Allows you to take a Big Mek w/Grot Oiler (Taking only the Oiler), A Big Mek in Mega Armour w/Grot Oiler (Taking only the Oiler) and Kaptin Badruk with an Ammo Runt (Taking only the Ammo Runt). Forge World Apparently have some 0 point Grot companion options too.
This will be changed, either totally reversing it or making understrength unable to take mandatory slots, just pointing out a massive flaw in the rules.

Local scene is about quick Patrol games ATM, 35pow a side. When it goes up to 50pow and more (there's an emerging campaign structure), I will probably take a Spearhead of Havocs with a Cultist meat shield, or a mobile Vanguard of mechanised Chosen & teleporting Terminators & a Hellforged Predator, and Summon in stuff that's needed. Automatically Appended Next Post: Edit: actually, I think I can field a pretty deadly Vanguard at 35pow. 5 Havocs, 5 Havocs, 10 Havocs, 20 Cultists, Lord. That's a lot of dakka & bodies... okay, time to switch out figure case contents

Lots of Battalion detachment lists for me. I've grown to love the Supreme Command Detachment though, nice to get a command point out of my LOW selection and Malefic Lords are great for fulfilling the requirements.

Vanguard and Supreme Command for Blood Angels considering our numerous strong Elites and HQs with bubble auras. Same for Space Wolves really.

Battalion is the only thing I can make a list for with my DE, other than patrol. It's mostly because I'm playing more of a fluffy list, but I just don't have the hq options to make anything else.

Battalion, Spearhead and Air Wing primarily, sometimes Outrider and very occasionally Patrol or Vanguard. Never Supreme Command, LoWA/LoW or Fortification, but that's mainly because playing Drukhari our HQs are pretty crappy, we have no LoW and I haven't looked closely enough at the unaligned fortifications to tell if I'd actually ever want to use one of them.

No, but you can spam smite. And your weirdboyz will peril a lot with 40+ boyz around, which you will need to reliably do d6 mortal wounds per WB.
