So I've decided to play in my local Fate of Konor campaign, and I'm using it as a chance to finally get around to all those Chaos miniatures I've not painted yet. This weekend I've been doing the Khorne Khultists armed with Khutting Khimplements, and while I'm not hugely happy with the result and I really should go back and highlight the skin and neaten up a few bits here and there, I expect them to die so quickly (khwickly?) that it won't make any difference. They certainly look much better than they did as grey plastic!

(Don't question why Kharl has an autogun rather than a melee weapon; if anyone asks I'll just say that he plans to hit people with the heavy end. Chaos doesn't have to make sense!)

I enjoyed the very slight conversion work here - the big bloke with the chainsaw is just the regular autogunner with the end of the gun replaced with a chainsword, and the chap in the mask has one of the flamers from the CSM sprue - I needed another flamer and apparently he's got a really strong left arm!

Next up, Nurgle cultists - over the space of a weekend I managed all forty-five of these models, which is probably why I'm feeling a bit burned out at the moment!

The whole warband, which will eventually include elements from each Chaos God, will be lead by Salazar the Arch-Sorceror, who will be warptiming deepstriking Warp Talons into the soft, juicy bits of my enemy's lines...

And apart from him, I'm working on some nurgle tanks (I know, METAL BAWKSES and all that) which I'm doing in a sort of dirty bone colour, some Iron Warriors havocs, and a unit of Slaaneshi marines who will be using a lot of the old Dark Vengeance models I've always been too worried to paint.

Do let me know what you'd like to see, and I'm eager for any advice or tricks on getting the next set looking even better!

Progress on the Warp Talons is going slow (I hate these models, far too much tiny detail. I'll be glad when they're over!) so instead here is some Slaanesh goodness!

I don't think the cloak on the Champion works to be honest - if I were to re-do it, I'd try building up with the initial coat of Rakarth Flesh and Carroburg Crimson, then layer on a soft pink before highlighting with Pallid Wych Flesh, but from the back I think it looks a bit better.

Happier with this, but it's still not great. Hopefully I can improve this because I suspect a lot of the new Chaos miniatures over the next few years will have cloaks or robes.

Again, the highlighting didn't really work here - I think the lines are just too thick, which means my paint is probably too thick. What do you guys find works to help avoid that?

Any and all comments appreciated - I might include one of the models I have from my very early painting days to show just how little I've improved!

I think your painting is looking good! a little thick in some places for sure, but that's the same problem i have. The detailed parts came out well!

one thing i tell myself when painting a layer is that if i think my paint looks too thin, it's probably actually the right amount.

I do think the bases for the khorne cultists are bit lackluster... maybe just a little something like aquarium gravel might add a bit of variety and texture?

I might try that too-thin trick later on the Iron Warriors, I'll need to do plenty of layers since I'm painting yellow over black for the stripes anyway...

I'm not too sure about the bases - I'm probably going to use Armageddon Dust, since that's what's on the Nurgle cultists. Hopefully it'll help tie the whole army together. Naturally, for the Khorne Khultists there will have to be a touch of Blood for the Blood God.

My latest procrastination; autocannon Havocs!

I'd originally bought all the bits, including some guns from Forge World, about two years ago when I first realised autocannons were great. Of course now they're arguably even better, and most importantly they don't go onto those bloody Warp Talons (grumble, moan).

This is Squad Pointyfinger, lead by Accusing Champion Objection Pointyfinger the Third. I like to think in close combat he just uses that single pointy finger to electrocute his victims, Emperor Palpatine-style.

This is Squad Boyband, so named for their ability to strike a media-friendly pose while under fire. The rest of the warband has a different opinion about their singing.

Hazard stripes are hard - I'm not hugely happy with the final result, and next time I'll use masking tape, but from a tabletop view they don't look too bad - and Iron Warriors was a fun scheme to paint. When I get a chance to find someone who knows what they're doing I'll shuffle the transfers over. I've now got blue, bright pink, brown, green, red AND silver in the warband - Tzeentch would be proud!

C&C welcome! Next up, I feel like doing some Spawns, and eventually I have to make some progress on these $@%£~# Warp Talons...

Another small update - these are the Juan Diaz daemonettes I've been working on. This is after the base layer and the first wash.

Tomorrow morning I'll do the second layer of druchii violet on the claws and the hair, then it's another layer of warpfiend grey over the skin. I'm not sure what to do about highlighting the claws, though - I want them to stay nicely dark but if I don't highlight them I feel like they'll be out of sync with the rest of the model. Then it's one more layer of slaanesh grey (the layer, not the drybrush) and then pick out the gold and the pink gems.

Locally Chaos is doing very well in the campaign, helped in small part by all this painting malarkey, but overall we lost Astramis. We shall not lose on Konor as well!

Nice stuff, I've found that its easier to do a little every day than to do a horde in a weekend.

Well, after a day's work, here is the final result!

As always, there are bits I would like to go over and neaten up but I will be happy with the result - I don't think the camera quite does them justice, because they really are gorgeous models - and hopefully my painting has done them justice.

I'm still slogging through the Warp Talons - I think once I have the blue finally finished most of the work will be done and I can speed up doing the other details - but in the meantime I've also ordered an Iron Warriors Warsmith to use as a Lord and give my Havocs someone to look scary next to. No posts for a while though, as I'm off to Germany soon, and there won't be any painting going with me; I think after what must be near eighty models painted, I've earned a few weeks away from the brushes!

Another model I've had sitting around for ages now - the Nurgle Daemon Prince!

Really I just wanted to have him finished and done - tomorrow is the last day before I head off to Germany for a week and a half, and to celebrate I'm having a game tomorrow at a friend's - who, coincidentally, I have never beaten yet! Of course, I've never beaten him because I never had my Daemon Prince (who I shall call Squishy)! He's awful for not painting his models, so hopefully being presented with a fully-painted army will inspire him to get on with it and put pigment to brush. After all, painted models do better on the table, it's a well known fact, proven by Science!(TM)

And, of course, I can't have a Daemon Prince without some daemon chums to go with him...

A natural combination, of course. I grabbed these last time I was in GW and given that they've only had about eight hours attention, I don't think they're too bad at all. Hopefully my Sorceror can summon them to give Squishy a hand next time he's in combat. After I come back from my hols I will probably be cracking down on university work - it's my final year and I'm aiming to get into Sheffield to do a Master's degree, so I need some good results. I'm sure with a bit of luck, some hard work, and maybe a tiny bit of help from the Ruinous Powers, I can make it happen - but it will mean my painting rate might slow down a little bit.

C&C welcome as always - these models were all knocked up in the same day, so I'm sure there's loads I could improve on, but for going to war on the table with, I'm pretty happy as they are.

I don't like doing work-in-progress updates, but since it's been a while I thought I'd keep you all up to date on what's coming out of the daemon forges...

Firstly, Chaos have now officially drawn at my local GW! Thanks in part to all of this bloody painting, the Imperium now cannot win the campaign, and since this week is Fast Attack week, I think I might be able to make a big difference for the side if I can get all of this lot done before thursday...

First up; some Chaos Spawns. Mostly because they're very easy. The plan is to do one in Nurgle colours to fill out the trio, and then three in slaanesh colours since I already know how to do them pretty quickly.

Some classic metal characters I've been waiting on - the Warsmith in particular was tricky to work out with that pinchy claw, but I got there in the end. Looking forward to painting him, since the Iron Warriors were fun to paint.

Two squads of classic Raptors, after two coats of Kantor Blue - before long they'll be Night Lording it up in the skies.

I've no idea what these two could be...especially that strange thing on a bike with a sword and a flamey head...

And since you've all been so nice, my Black Legion terminator squad, lead by Aspiring Champion Buzz Flyface...

Warning From Magnus? Not Listening!

Holy Terra.

Are those Rubricae I spy there? Be warned, their trim in the most evilest this GW has evert created, although I did paint the armour before the trim. So spraying them gold might make it easier.

Subbed anyways.

They certainly are! I've had them for an age and never worked up the courage to paint them. I think these raptors, or the new raptors, might be in contention for taking that title of 'worst ever trim to paint' - I don't know what it is about really ornate, baroque models but they're a right pain in the paintbrush!

Thanks!

Another work-in-progress post...

The raptors are almost basecoated; I've got to go over the trim with balthasar gold on four more, then do the skulls, and then I can look to neaten up the messy bits before washing & highlighting - and then the fun bit, the lightning bolts!

At least I've guaranteed some points for the campaign this week - those four Chaos Spawn are done and ready for the field, and the warpsmith is 2/3rds basecoated. I've still got to put on a gold trim and pick out the cables in some bright colours, then it's onto the hazard stripes and washes.

The two sorcerors are both going to be alpha legion - I'm basing them on Sindri Myr from Dawn of War, and I'm having two because then my opponent will never know which is the REAL one! (Of course, neither of them are!)

I've really enjoyed this - it's been hard work to get them to this stage, and most of it was awful, but I'll explain in a minute...

(Blimey, he seems very tall.)

So, as you can see, they're Night Lords - including lightning!

It took an absolute age to put all the layers on and go back and neaten up the big patches and I honestly thought I'd skip the lightning because it would be even more work - boy, was I wrong! As soon as it went on I was having a blast, and for the first time in ages I'm genuinely really pleased with the end result; they're not perfect by any means, but that lightning is great to look at! They're going into battle tomorrow, which will probably be a disaster, but they're going to look brilliant doing it!

The big lesson to take away from this is, when painting, don't be afraid to try something new or difficult. If you screw up, you can neaten up later, and if it works you might even find you really enjoy it!

This only leaves a few Legions left to do - the World Eaters and the Word Bearers, and then my aim of having at least one model from every Legion will be complete!

Just a small update today - took some time away from the regular projects to paint up the Dark Apostle from Dark Vengeance.

Shouty Barry here will end up shepherding the meat shields faithful cultists and keep them around longer than one turn, hopefully to take some bullets while the rest of the force does actual killing.

I'm also going to include two squads of Word Bearers chosen in an old armour mark, not sure which yet. I might get them a party bus too - I can't really justify a Land Raider for them but a big red Rhino might be fun to paint.

I've also got on the go:

- World Eaters Possessed
- Some Flamers for my tzeentch sorcerors to summon.
- Those characters from a few posts above - the twin Alpha Legion Sorcerors who shall be named Sinrdi and Idrins, plus the Iron Warriors character model.
- I might try the Rubricae in the Black Legion colours from the Chaos codex - black and gold is a nice colour combination, after all, and the whole spirit of this army was that it's a disparate warband lead by a madman with big metal fingers - the Jump Pack sorceror from so many posts ago.
- And of course, the infamous [REDACTED]!

Once all those are done I'll be at a bit of a loose end!

I've been blessed by Grandfather Nurgle this weekend so I haven't been able to do as much as I would have liked - the twin sorcerors will have to wait until tomorrow, but I've not been completely idle...

I picked these guys up since I'm not a big fan of the Horrors miniatures and I wanted something for a tzeentch character to summon. To be honest, I'm not sure this is particularly good, but at least they are painted. In particular, the blue hasn't worked out; I underestimated just how bright the second blue would be. If I was to do it a second time, I'd see about getting another blue - something like the old ultramarines blue - and then use lothern blue as an edge highlight. Maybe lothern blue is too bright altogether - next time I'm in GW I shall have to ask about and see what the locals are using.

Here's some more progress shots of the biker; after this I'll just have to do a dot of carroburg crimson on the studs and the recesses on the rider, and then a fine edge highlight of emperor's children with my teeny-tiny brush.

Hope you enjoy!

Here he is, in all his chaotic glory...

"Out of the mists of chaos he rides,
bike in his crotch and sword at his side!
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOM Rider!"

I'll freely admit he isn't my best work - I actually think Typhus was better - but this model was so much fun that I just HAVE to share him. I wasn't prepared to risk making a poor job with traditional flames, and I wanted something suitably warp-y, so the same nihilakh oxide I did for the flamers, but god, he was such a laugh. Look at his tiny flaming head and tell me you don't think he's the most adorable widdle prince of slaanesh, yes he is, oh yes he is...

With that, I've got almost all my painting done - I'm only going to get one more character - the warpsmith - and that will be all the stuff I can realistically get done for the campaign. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to have a game next week, so I'll take a photo, but otherwise, I'm coming to the end. I'll try to get the whole warband in a big family photo soon!
