Very cool dreadnought conversion. Is that a game legal piece or just something for fun?

It’s a conversion/proxy of a Forgeworld special character, Bray’arth Ashmantle, so as legal as that entails. His issue there is he’s bigger and on a bigger base due to being built out of a Redemptor instead of the classic Dreadnought chassis. There’s a bunch of locals who’ve built various FW dreads out of Redemptors so that’s not much of an issue though.

Finished the other two Outriders, got the new heads on the Eradicators, and built an old Captain kit I’ve had laying around.

Didn’t get as much built, and one of them was that old Captain, because I spent a chunk of the time cleaning off old sprues and sorting the bits down into boxes. The sprue pile was getting too cumbersome.

Got all the Assault Intercessors built. First five are done as per instructions. Second five I cut the pegs off the shoulders and swapped their arms around for a bit of variety.

Got most of the iconography on everyone done. Just missing their squad numbers, which I need to go thru everyone I’ve done so far and see who’s assigned what and where and plot this out a bit.

Chaplain and Judiciar got new Reiver heads, and the Judiciar and Ancient got right side pauldrons.

I forgot about the Outriders on the bottom tray. Will get to get their iconography done tonight.

All of the Indomitus Marines are built. Now I just need to do their bases, which should be an easy enough project for tonight.

Keep up the great pace! Can't wait to see you paint these.

Also, your sprue cleaning has put me to shame. I need to do that as well.

Definitely looking forward to painting the Bladeguard. That’s my plan for next week.

Ssssssoooooo... I didn’t get the bases done on Friday. I slacked off and just watched shows, figuring I’d do it over the weekend at home. Then over the weekend at home I just played more Final Fantasy Online... I got them done today though! Man those lava bases are tedious to put together though, especially this many at one time. And oh the mess it makes. So much dust and plastic slag and crumbled cork everywhere. Probably better I don’t do it at home actually.

Anyways here’s some of the fancy bases. The Captain comes standing on such a perfectly shaped rock, I decided to just use that as a peninsula, and he’ll have more lava on his base than any model prior. It’s definite overkill but it amuses me.

The other notable one is the bike jumping over a lava pool. More overkill, but also amusing.

The fissure that's in the base is going to be filled with lava? Like in the other dreadnought few posts above? That's super cool, what is your process for the base?

EDIT: uh btw, congrats on clearing the sprue pile!!!!

To do the lava fissure bases, I first dremel out the top flat of the base so its just the rim left (black plastic slag everywhere). Then I trace the inside onto a sheet of cork, glue the rim to a sheet of plasticard, cut out the cork circle, and glue that to the plasticard inside the base. Cut that off the sheet, dremel the plasticard down flush to the rim (white plastic slag everywhere), dremel the cork which is a bit thicker than the bases are deep down level with the top of the rim of the base (cork dust everywhere), and finally scrap the flat of the knife blade around the edge of the base to smooth that off better (black and white plastic shavings everywhere). Depending on the model and my mood, sometimes I pin them to the base before the next step, sometimes after, but once I decide how I want the fissure to look I’ve got a right handle hook tool that was originally some sort of sewing tool that I used to rip out a good crevice. You don’t wanna cut it, you wanna rip it so you’ve got good rough jagged sides. You’ve also got bits of cork still glued to the base to give some texture.

Paint the base dark grey (Eshin iirc), cover the top with astrogranite/debris, then a good coat or two of Nuln oil shade. Paint the bottom of the fissure white, two coats, make it a strong solid white, then put a whole bunch of Cassandra yellow shade down there, like you want that stuff to pool, maybe two coats if it’s too thin and yellow.

And that’s how I do my lava. It’s super tedious but I like having the fissures cut into the base instead of being something that sits on top of it. The downside being the plasticard makes the bases slightly taller, and the flat underside is not great for some terrain.

It’s a very simple Moot Green with a Beil Tan Green shade. I don’t find it’s That bright in person, but the green really loves the lighting in the guard shack where I work and photographs super bright.

Oh wow, you are really plowing on through. I am still too busy painting oldmarines for upcoming Badab Campaign weekends to even desprue any of my 130 Numarines!

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Posting as Fifty_Painting on Instagram.

I abandoned my old marines. Had stopped playing for awhile (might have missed all of seventh?) and just got back into it at the start of eighth with the Primaris. Originally did Dark Angels, did a counts as for awhile, switched to Salamander rules when Armageddon came out because Two Flamers! Done counts as Salamanders since, and figured with the restart, just do actual Salamanders.

I like the fact you stuck with older skin tones. Not so sure about the bright blue cables/lights. Feels like it clashes a bit with the bright green. Then again, you say everything is less bright in person, so pinch of salt.

Blue cables are a weird quirk of mine. Traditionally, regardless of the model’s color, I would paint smooth cables blue, and ribbed cables green, then black wash em all. With the Salamanders, due to their armor being green, I’ve opted to paint all the cables blue. It’s just kind of a thing.

Been slacking off on my painting for the last month, but with the new Codex release imminent I’m trying to get back to finishing my Bladeguard. I’ve gotten the black basecoat done on all of them, and have done the base silver on the unit. Silver the characters tomorrow and get the black touched up and second coated where needed.

Finished the basecoats of the blacks and the silvers and got the black wash over all that. Tomorrow I start redoing the white and bone basecoats. Other assorted detail work as well, but these guys will need a lot of white and bone.

Base whites and bones done and second coated where needed. I need to get in there and do a few dark yellow ropes and the Mohawk, plus red purity seals, then hit a bunch of that with brown and sepia washes. Start working on the golden yellows and flames after that.

Alright, the Marines themselves are done I do believe. Managed to get thru all the details and washes and touch ups tonight. Got the first basecoat for the base down. I have very nearly gotten my desk at home all cleaned off and set up for use, so I’ll finish that up and then put down the texture on the bases so that can dry for some hours and be ready for washing tonight. Should have them totally finished this time tomorrow and ready to wreck Judy’s Sisters on Sunday.

“Finished” the Bladeguard. I think I’m going to try and go back and redo the eyes. These alternate heads don’t have as defined of lenses as the originals, and I did a poor job picking out where paint should go. My new desk lamp has a magnifying glass built into it though so I’m gonna give that a shot and see how bad I can stress cramp my hand with teeny detail work. Regardless, these chaps are all psyched up to put Judy’s Sisters to the blade tomorrow!

Great looking units mate. The rich green armour, the bases and the power swords are just lovely. Smart tertiary colour choices in the black/silver/bone too.

Nice to see the process of the painting and good luck in the game v sisters!

Thanks! Also, I crushed the Sisters. 72-58 iirc.

Back to building models this week, namely some Salamanders characters.

Bray’arth, the Dreadnought, got a couple small details on the top. Namely just a brazier to cover up where the rocket pods normally go, and imitate the official model’s flame. Small Iron Halo for similar reasons of evoking the original model. All he really needs left is for me to drill out and hang some genestealer skulls on his left shoulder.

Built Adrax (on the right). Swapped his right shoulder out for a more plain one so I could adorn it with the standard flame I put on my guys. Do more care for his little shield thing, Too baroque, so I took that off. Lastly slapped a couple of the knee pad icons I use on him.

The model on the left is going to be my Vulkan He’stan. Want a Primaris version of him to match everyone else in my army. Built the main body of the model, and rigged up a Gauntlet of the Forge out of a Hand Flamer. Need to sculp the back of that, and the scales of his salamander hide mantle next, but forgot my sculpting tools at home so I’ll have to do that tonight.

First layer down on Vulkan’s Kesare’s Mantle. Rough kind of diamond hex pattern for lizard scales. Next go back thru and raise up the central columns into more of a ridge. Will also go back later and widen it out on the right side once that arm and shoulder pauldron are in place.

My Primaris Vulkan He’stan is more or less finished. I do want to go back and tidy up a couple spots around the cloak, and make him a base, but otherwise this is what he’s gonna look like.
