Not in the Grey Knight book, no. They've been separated since 6th Edition I think though.

All HQ's should have regular smite. I really don't understand why that would be so bad, but it's apparently not a luxury we're allowed right now.

Well - the good news is our smite can be even better now.
Take an ancient and everything within 6" gets d6 smite but I think the range goes down to 6". So a brotherhood champion makes that 12" - every unit have 12" d6 smite? This is top tier kind of stuff.

So gent's after watching the review - I am pleasantly surpised.
I imagine doing some quick math that a competitive GK army is going to look something like this.
Batalllion
Grand master Dreadknight - Psicannon/Psilencer - sword - teleporter -( you will give him your free relic curious of sacrifice for a 5+ fnp - Probably warlord as well so he can hand out reroll charge to everyone within 6" with his warlord trait - it's fairly easy to get hit to a 2++ save)
Voldis
Strike Squad 5x Rhino
Strike Squad 5x
Strike Squad 5x Razor TLLC
Batalllion
Grand master Dreadknight - Psicannon/Psilencer - sword - teleporter
Brother Captain
Strike Squad 5x Rhino
Strike Squad 5x
Strike Squad 5x Razor TLLC
Paladin Ancient (you will spend 1 CP to give him the special banner)
The rest of your points will go into something like a paladin unit - or more grand master dreadknight or more strike squads.
Personally I see this as being a very competitive army.

Unfortunately, your optimism and build are based on two major misconceptions.
1. The D6 smite from the banner is only for the banner-holder. It doesn't spread to other Grey Knights. So you get 1 guy with D6 smite. That's it.
2. The Dreadknight Grandmaster cannot take the 5+ FnP relic because it is restricted to Infantry only. The only relic the DK GM can take is the -1 leadership to Daemons Liber.

Gk librarians currently have normal smite. That's why they're good.
New codex is good.
Smite is critically important. Take a brother captain.
I'll be taking 2 Librarians and a Brother Captain. Double range normal smite? Great. Get that ancient near the captain. 12" d6 smite? Great.
4 drops can push d3 + d3 + d6 +1 MORTAL WOUNDS from Smite at 12"... on 4+..
at 170 points you can take a lib with a staff and stormshield (in the index). That's a 2++ in melee, 3++ ranged. That's a lot to get through to stop those smites.
Libs also get d6 MW on 10+, due to the +1 for being a GK.
Vortex of Doom is the most fun ability I've seen in 8th.
Lots of tepid reactions here but I see no issues in the codex.
What challenges do you anticipate?
You all might be right! But I'm excited to try it.

I'm pretty sure most people will require you to use the Codex, not the Index. Tournaments almost certainly will. Codex Librarians have babysmite, not full smite and they cannot take Storm Shields, so most of this falls apart.

Can you point me to a reference for Librarians having Rites of Banishment?
If that's the case, it's a bit of a shame :( will take Crowe instead for the other d6.

It's in the new Codex. You can find people flipping through copies on YouTube. Just freeze the clip when they flip over the Librarian entry and check the special rules.

Terminators going up two points makes Paladins that little bit more enticing. Being able claim objectives with one troop model does seem good, Strike Squads might be a better choice then?
Been trying to build some lists and running into the classic Grey Knights issue of everything costing so many points haha.
I think the GMDK is almost a no-brainer though, its a huge upgrade for 30 points and fills out an HQ slot. Fitting a SR in also seems like one of the best options for reliable anti tank weapons, however where do the small Gunships fit into a list? The more I think about it the less I want to include troops as they take up valuable points and really only contribute to making objectives easier and +3 CP.
Of all the armies I am keen to build an army for Grey Knights seems the hardest to settle on a list that includes everything I want on the table.

I am hitting the same issues. Some Strike squads to strategically drop on objectives for ObSec (rather than alpha strike with) and get the +3 CP (cause our Stratagems actually are pretty decent) seems like a good start. It's just fitting the rest in though.

Was there something that made your bolters +1 S? What was it, a permanent upgrade or one turn only?

It's a Stratagem. Adds +1S and -1AP, but only for 1 unit and for 1 turn only. 2 CP. It's not bad on a big 10-man squad but we'll need plenty of troops to have enough CP to make use of it and our other ones.

That is unfortunate - you are correct though - it is just the banner holder. That's not what the reviewer said in the video posted in this thread - kind of disappointing. I guess that just means were taking a lot of Dreadknight Grand masters. Plus spamming heavy bolter fire from your strike squads and psybolt ammo. It's still good - Just not the insane mortal wounds that I thought it could do originally. It's just a shame - greyknight armies aren't going to look much different than 7th edition - I do think they will have a higher place in the order of things though. If you are building a deep strike oriented list in 8th ed - cheap flyers are actually an excellent source of drops that are capable of being set up (hence allowing another unit to deep strike) but able to be deployed far back in your deployment zone (allowing you to survive the first turn).
I kind of like the idea of 3 storm hawks starting safe in the corner and 3 GK Grand Masters in DK's - giving you some really devastating alpha. Rest of the points likely going into strike squads - some in las razors - some deep striking. Fitting Voldis in there seems like a good idea as well.
