So the blurb about Belisarius Cawl: The Great Work begins 'On the Terran side of the Imperium...' - but Sotha is way in the Imperium Nihilus...

Valdor written by Wraight? Thats like an instant buy for me. IMHO pretty much one of the Top 3 BL writers

Picked up the limited editions for Kal Jericho and Plague War, apparently limited editions for older, popular books are a thing now (confirmed in the new books seminar). This annoys me as I tend to buy hard backs as soon as they come out, but I don't want to by a standard hardback when I could have bought a limited edition, so this me over.

Also picked up Hollow Mountain, got it signed to me, then found out it will be coming as a limited edition later, .

Somebody bought up the fiasco that was SoT 1 limited edition sales. As BL already stated book 2 will be out in a few weeks (less than a month) and only available on Gdub's site not BL. Apparently only one copy per purchase allowed but no protection against multiple purchases or accounts so scalping will still be a thing.

The Valdor book is particular interesting as it will be one of a series (think Primarch series, complete with limited editions for the entire range) but is set (at least for Valdor) after unification but before the Heresy. The whole series sounds essential to me.

2 more Primarch books due next year, those are already in development.

The Cawl book is potentially a turning point in the current lore ,
Spoiler:
Sotha is where the Pharos was during the Heresy, which broke during the final assault by traitor forces unleashing a psychic blast so big it broke the warp storms.
.

My guess is Cawl is the only one other than Robby G who knows about what is buried there. Find it, fix it, gigantic psychic blast and reunite the Imperium.

It was mentioned that this book is potentially part of a series.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
BTW the limited books for existing books in series was actually mentioned as being dependent on how well Plague War limited edition sells as they said community asked for it. If it sells through quickly then they will do other books. If it doesn't sell, then maybe not. Plague War was on sale today and didn't sell out by the time I left around 5:30. I'd estimate at the start around 100 copies were on the table and there was about 15 left. Even so that's 650 ish for the rest of the world.

Is there any word on when or if Josh is going to do another Eight Lamentations novel? Personally I kinda sorta want another one of his excellent "big dumb Summer action movie" novels again.

It didn't get asked and it wasn't covered with the preview seminar. Between the books that were on early sale at the event and the seminar which is summarised by the WHC article yesterday, there wasn't much more revealed though obviously talked in more detail about the titles than WHC has covered and showed artwork etc

They said Primarch series will be completed, 2 more in 2020 as slowing down to focus on other projects, no more this year. They are going to do more rerelease of Liber Chaotica type books and these are being worked on but couldn't say more, next one is the already announced Sabbat Worlds Crusades. Solar War Limited Edition maps are getting a print release but not for some time yet. More 20th anniversary books after Space Wolf - First and Only and Trollslayer. The Castle of Blood book mentioned on WHC I honestly don't remember being mentioned ! The House Horror book is about a colonel returning to his ancestral house , artwork for cover is very traditional style Victorian mansion with lot of little details, it looked v different from usual style GW have done.

I guess you missed out on the Dan Abnett voxcast episode then, where he's stated that he's been working on the sequel, it's probably coming some time next year.

Authors also don't (generally) get to decide what to write with properties like these, its all down to the ip holder

although they can say they want to do something if they're keen but the decision to green light a project is down to somebody else

(they can also say the don't want to do something in which case the ip holder can wait until they are ready or and the project and characters over to somebody else since they aren't the property of the author)

Yeah, Dan is something of an exception to the rule though and he delivers!

"Hey guys, can I write a book about Warhammer pirates?"

"Hey guys, can I write a book about air combat?"

"Hey guys, can I write a book about titans?"

Or the best one, when shown the upcoming Inquisitor game.

"This stuff is amazing! Who is writing about it?"

Importantly, more Warhammer Horror.

I’ve read the first two books, and listened to the audio drama.

For anyone still on the fence, I’d sum it up as ‘Black Library, but with the gloves off’. They of course play on Horror tropes, but all have felt part of their respective settings, and help get across just how thoroughly nasty they can be.

What isn't apparent with Warhammer Horror is how the fantasy books are actually all Old World whilst the short stories are Age of Sigmar. Confusing because BL lists the horror books all under AoS.

That won't last much longer, they've shown zero interest in producing new WHF content and while I enjoyed a lot of the WHF novels only the Genevieve series could really claim "horror" as a subgenre. Now that the launch period is over I'll wager AoS novels will be the norm.

Also, folk have to remember that regardless of how little sense it makes, GW view WHF and AoS as the same setting.

Oh I agree it should move with AoS, its just odd how the horror books for fantasy are listed under AoS when BL has been good in keeping all the other Old World stuff listed under the Old World.

The Genevieve series are, well, kinda weird.

They’re old, old Warhammer Stories. So old, Karl Franz was literally in Nappies at the time the books are set. And the world was somewhat different to what it became. Still recognisable, but very much a protoform.

Good reads though

Risky to judge the number sold as they keep the boxes of spare stock of the books under the table so if its selling well they may or may not have restocked it from underneath the table during the day. I guess if you really want to track it then keeping a record of the limited edition numbers would prove if they are or aren't selling.

It was interesting that they dropped the number of limiteds to 750 from the more usual 1250 (SoT and the like are 2500), which I feel is a far better number for most books as they are far more likely to sell out/nearly sell out than they have done. I could have picked up any of up to half a dozen prior limited editions that were pulled from BL before they had sold out (some had more than 500 copies left from when I last saw them according to the "fewer than" sticker on their image). I think they have been over estimating demand for a long time on them.

With a lower threshold we'll see more reprints of books that are already popular, including the ones they mentioned at the seminar such as Hollow Mountain and Incarnation, which like Plague war have a prior book in the series that is a limited edition and have sold well (obviously bit early to tell for Hollow Mountain). I feel its a done deal we'll see these as limited editions again with the lower threshold as them already being popular and the new lower total of limiteds will just push it rather than a few random people asking them. This new approach means I am not buying any standard edition hardbacks again on the off chance a limited edition turns up later, I'm not happy being punished for buying a book early when I'm a big collector of limited editions.

Numbers dropped may be due to them overestimating the demand for some titles. They're still trying to sell The Warmaster, Blood of Iax and Warhawk of Chogoris in limited edition format.

I have high hopes for Hollow Mountain and Incarnation, I'm just not fond of the six month wait in between special edition and regular hardback editions dropping.

Wonder if they'll do another numbered HH release to collate all the unpublished shorts and audios that are out or if it'll get a shorter unnumbered release like the two tie in ones for Betrayal at Calth and the Tallarn one.

There's the Blackshield ones and I'm sure there's a few others knocking about.

There's the Witch Hunter trilogy (if the first of those isn't horror, I don't know what is), and I recall another stand alone story about a Necromancer.

Anyhow, while it's hardly surprising that there is no new WHF content, the sheer amount of rereleased content is quite staggering. Not that I mind - a great way to finally get my hands on X or Y - but it does draw a lot of attention to a thing that, as far as they're concerned, doesn't really exist anymore.

Oh don't get me wrong the reprints are more than welcome, I got a few I missed first time around, and my Gotrek & Felix omnibuses were on the verge of falling apart. However I don't think they're so much about drawing attention to WHF as they are the lowest possible effort move GW could make to tap the people coming into things via the Total Warhammer games, and a way of squeezing that last little drop of blood from the AoS-refusnik element of the fandom stone. It's just a shame given the Horror imprint would be the perfect place to do some new WHF content - if they can do the Heresy or even if Abnett gets his wish Unification for 40K, there's no reason they can't go back and do "historical" material for WHF as well if they like, AoS is established now so they don't need to pretend WHF doesn't exist as they did initially. As I say though, I don't expect they will.

I'm also really glad that they appear to be doing all the series in their own collected editions - and also doing them on ebook formats as well. Heck they've also reprinted Libre Chaotica in hardback and they've been doing the old Inferno reprints as well (on made to order so more limited in supply).

GW has a huge legacy of stories so I'm glad that they are not abandoning them and leaving gamers to have to hunt for them if they want them - meaning that money goes into the pockets of secondhand sales and into ever more dogged and worn paperbacks.

I’m with you there. I buy pretty much all the limited editions so it won’t make much sense to buy hardbacks and I’m far enough behind in my reading not to be in any rush, I will await paperback and buy the limited eds when and if it comes. I think this would be a great policy if it applied to classic reprints like Eisenhorn or Ravenor rather than a book a few months old.

I was actually surprised the Liber Chaotica reprint was, for GW, so reasonably priced. And not even direct only - picked it up for 33 quid shipped from Dark Sphere.

Oh in fact, there you go, that's an idea for some "new" WHF content - trawl through the company's concept art archive and put together a "Gothic & Eldritch" style coffee table book focused on the WHFB factions, maybe with a chapter on Mordheim as well. If they're really going all-in on AoS and are convinced that WHF factions weren't "protectable" from an IP standpoint anyway, it's not like most of that back catalogue is going to get used or reused.

I'd love GW to do more art books and concept sketches - they must have a massive megaload! Sadly a lot of them they've done like the semi-recent Eldar one - are all short term one off printings. Which is a right pain because it means you have to buy within a very fast window to get hold of them.

That said if they did them they'd have to sign a paper to agree to not do a single double page spread artwork - I loath it when companies do that and you've got a great work of art - with the whole middle utterly impossible to see unless you crack the books spine to lay it flat - even then you've sitll got a line going right down the middle.
