I would love to see more along the lines of the Dark Vengeance Chaos Marines. I felt they had the level of mutation I'd love to see to make them more unique.
Would you want to see more like those or more along the lines of the newer, higher quality space marine kits + more detailed horns?

I'd like to see a kit(s) that takes cues from the AoS Blood Warriors, DV Chosen to make something a bit more ornate. I have bought many chaos space marine kits, but I always think they're just a little on the plain side.

I like the dark vengeance Chosen, but that level of mutation/iconography would IMO be best suited for Chosen, not standard CSM. I’d be happy if they kept the current design aesthetic for them (spikes here and there, trim, skulls, some daemonic ornamentation) but with crisp details, proper proportions, and non-squatty poses.

I'll go wildly against the grain here...make them far less ornate. To be fair I run a CSM army which features only...a dozen actual Chaos models because I find the range is so overdone and silly. I was warming up to do a Death Guard army until they released the new models, and I simply can't cope with them. So they killed that idea stone cold dead, and I moved to my own CSM who simply worship <Nurgle>, etc.
I won't say any more as there is not a chance in hell GW will dial back the silliness/overstyling in future releases. If AoS/Death Guard are any indication the GW styling and I have parted ways. Luckily I have HH plastics.

Personally, I'd rather see them way less blinged out. The Dark Vengeance chosen were cool models, but had way too many small intricacies, filigree and details on them. I'd rather something closer to like 30k MkV armor; bits and pieces of various armor marks, possibly with spiked helmets (to show they are evil) similar to the 30k sons of horus range from forgeworld. Look barbaric and corrupt without lots of ridiculous detail.

I'd like them to move away from the "Space Marines with Horns and topknots" look and more towards something a bit more unique. My favourite depiction is actually in the Codex artwork, but not the unit entry art in the "bestiary" section or colour pallets.
The Alpha Legionnaire on pg28, Iron Warrior on pg31, the Slaanesh marine on pg117. All these show Chaos Marines as something other than "spikey marine".
My all time favourite though is the one holding the axe on pg164. Similar aesthetic to the Dark Vengenace marines but a little less extreme. It's also pretty close to the appearance of the CSM corpse on Guilliman's base

Oh gods no.
My problem with the current CSM aesthetic is that it is lazy. It is literally horns and trims sculpted on existing Imperial Marines.
What I'd prefer is closer to what the Raptors are at the moment - where they have the 'Marine' Silhouette but are distinctly different - you can recognise elements of the Mk IV armour and wargear but it's twisted just enough, just 'organic' enough to be different.
The Dark Vengeance Chosen are a bit too far along the organic route - the Raptors are just about right - you have twisted weaponry, twisted helms, twisted shoulder pads and all. There's the right mix of archaic and corrupted.
I feel that the Thousand Sons also got that right - they're distinctly Chaotic in appearance but you can recognise the Heresy-era armour and weapon patterns. I would include the Death Guard but I feel the sculptor there went way to OTT with horns and tentacles to the extent where they need to be dumped into a pit of octopus and boar tusks to get over their fetish.
Essentialy what I want to see is the Raptor-style aesthetic. Where the armour has a distinct nod to Heresy marks but is just corrupted enough with semi-organic ridges or growths to be be something 'else'. As Fhanados said - it's a dialing down of the DV Chosen.
Picture the current CSM at a scale of 0, the DV Chosen at 10 and we're aiming for Raptor Standard - so between 4 and 6.
I hope the Heresy armour mark designs continue - I'd love to see World Eaters end up with Mk V kits with studs, spikes, piping and hybrid marks of armour...and I'd love to see the EC be another Mk IV based force with their kits.
And if they ever get round to generic CSM? Design our vehicles closer to the Deimos aesthetic - give us rounder sponsons and turrents, corrupted of course with semi-organic growths and rends in the hull. Make the generic CSM kit a hybrid one that combines elements of Mk III, Mk IV and Mk V. Maybe even spoil us and throw in some Mk VI and Mk VII bits (just as the Tactical squad as the odd bit and piece from older marks - give us the odd bit and piece from newer marks).

Dark Vengeance is a good starting point for CSM, it was a shame they didn't continue with it and released a new CSM box set following that same design (for now)
What I'd really like to see is a units with salvaged armour from different marks etc to represent the Long War and that they are scrounging together different armour joints just to stay operational (like in the Night Lords series by ADB)

@DarkStar: I like the raptors aesthetic, too. Combining that with the things I like (horns, skulls, spikes) would be perfection for me.

Maybe I just think a IoM player complaining about chaos getting some subfactions is a bit silly.
even assuming a best case scenerio of 1 emp's children and world eaters codex, and a renegades and ehretics codex, that would take chaos up to
7 or so codices. versues how many IoM 'dexes?

Yes! I forgot about the raptors. I keep thinking about using them for future chaos marines.

Amen. I like cleaner, simpler models. That's why I've put off painting the nurgle half of dark vengeance, I don't want to be rooting around for all the weird little details, but the 30k aesthetic of the regularised armour just resonates so much better for me.

I actually like the current CSM design. it suits them rather well as being a ragtag group of corrupted marines. and that's what most of them currently ARE.
The original legions should be using mostly heresy era style, who is easily available now with BaT and BoP, and TS/DG have their own distinct styles now.
DV style works well for chosen, not for rank-and-file.

Despite the fact I quite like the current Chaos space marine squad, here's what I'd like a new set to have...
Old marks of marine armour, mixed with each other, looking far more gothic, ie studded pauldrons, chainmail, raised gorgets etc. If someone wants a daemon forming out of the armour this would be an option that could be glued on, likewise spikes, eight pointed stars, grizzly trophy racks etc etc.
What I don't want is armour absolutely festooned with detail, or even worse, monopose marines.

I’d like to see extremely ornate, brutal looking models with better scale and more options.
Truthfully though, we will probably be seeing Chaos primaris. Unless they re-do the entire range in that scale and keep the standard units that have been in the lore for decades i.e. tactical, havocs, raptors, I will not be buying them. I don’t want to see this intercessor, aggressor, hellblasted janky gak. Just give me the classics.

Dark vengeance style. Indeed, I feel the miss with normal chaos Marines is that they are weaker loyalist versions. They need a differentiation in terms of style and rules.
These are supposed to be 10000 year old veterans of the long war not cannon fodder. I always thought rules wise they should just take the chosen entry and make that the base chaos marine entry. Give them dark vengeance style models and we would be all set.

I dont get why people say every legion model needs to be in mk 4 armor. Sure most (unless we go by GW space marine fluff where CSM die in the thousands to one marine  ) of them are from the heresy. But over time they have had to make or recruit new marines. If recruited those very marines would be in modern gear. Sure the old marks should be very much standard but id say a good amount should also be recent gear,

Chaos Marines need to follow two different schemes, one for those who have fought the Long War, and one for those who are relatively new. The Red Corsairs should fit the latter, while the Black Legion and Iron Warriors followed the former.
