Building lists for your games just got easier – Combat Roster is now live!

Combat Roster is an online list-builder that lets you construct lists using Power Level for free – basically, we liked Warscroll Builder so much that we commissioned Tom, a fan of ours and keen programmer, to make something like it for Warhammer 40,000. Whether you’re looking to build a killer army for your next game, wondering what else you can fit on your list, or just want to see how many Gretchin you can squeeze into a 100 Power army,* you’ll find Combat Roster an invaluable tool.

If you’re looking to build lists with points, worry not – the upcoming Warhammer 40,000 app will feature a points-based list tool. Stay tuned to Warhammer Community for further announcements.

Start building your lists today – check out Combat Roster with the link below:

This seems very incomplete and wholly limited in scope. The user can't even set wargear options, troops choices are missing (Ultramarines, for example) and so on, so forth.

Unimpressed.

Wargear is irrelevant with power level. I would imagine you'll be able to choose specific options when the app comes out, though.

Shoot! You're right, I never use PL.

So...

No points, no stat lines, no wargear options, missing datasheets.

This looks like it has no value at all for Matched Play. Am I wrong?

This is.. a minimal start. Nice that they are finally trying to get in the game, but this is not a complete product for most players. Hopefully it continues to be developed over time.

The missing troops are under the generic "Space Marines" entry.

It's.... not great... But I guess it's a starting point.

Stat lines were never gonna happen, and wargear doesn't matter for PL. There is a 40k app in the works that will have them though.

It also doesn't have any of the Forgeworld datasheets.

How much do you think we'll have to pay to unlock each Codex/Faction in this upcoming app?

No way to organize units into detachments either - its value for narrative play is minimal.

It might have some use for Open Play among players who just started and only own recent models from the core GW line of kits.

It does seem to perform basic addition accurately, for what that's worth.

Yikes. This is not them putting their best foot forward.

I appreciate that they weren't intending to roll out everything at once - starting out with just Power Levels, for example. But the lack of information provided on these sheets and the inability to organize into detachments is...yeesh. I would have expected that sort of stuff at the bare minimum.

But we'll see where it goes, at least... The UI itself works nicely.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

If we go by AoS 3$ a month.

Best comment yet.

I do agree that it looks like a great tool for brand new players... and by brand new, I mean new to tabletop gaming and not new to 40k... who are only interested in casual, semi-balanced games with friends. It seems to have no use once you get into a gaming community where you'll be meeting new people/playing with acquaintances. Anecdotally, it seems like if you walk into an FLGS anywhere in the world, there is a high likelihood that a "standard" game of 40k will be matched play, anywhere from 1000 to 2000 points. This tool isn't for that type of game.

The AoS tool charges a monthly subscription per faction? That's insane. Gotta get every last penny, I guess.

Additionally, there is really very little reason to pay for the Azyr app when compared to the free (GW-endorsed) Scrollbuilder.
Scrollbuilder have less (no?) errors in contrast to the paid app, and it works just fine off the community website rather than in a specfic app. Only real downside I know of, is that you cannot add your own pictures and such via the Scrollbuilder, but then, why you would do that in the first place, I don't know.

It does actually, if you hit the search button you can also choose FW datasheets.

It's pretty basic so far, but I guess you'll have to start somewhere.

Agreed. I imagine it's been a bit of an effort keeping up with the codex releases.

Probably work

Wow... I feel like that is kind of a low standard for success.

Guess they're trying at least.

- Adding heavy weapons to infantry squads doesn't reduce squad size
- Apparently zero validation (tempestus command squad added with no prime in list)

Looks like a good starting point. I might use it for Tournament lists, with some penned notes on special equipment and whatnot. BS is still my primary list builder, but this is definitely nice and readable.

That's a Matched-Play-only rule. It wouldn't be very relevant for the PL app anyway.

The builder also lets me take a Farseer, a Thunderhawk and a few squads of Ork Boyz as a list - so it's not enforcing any rules aside from providing a total PL.

I don't get it. Surely even with PL you need to record loadouts (unless you play strict WYSIWYG)? Adding up the PL isn't the difficult bit

I think I'll stick with BattleScribe...

Loads of people do. People tend to mistake the way they or their local scene plays as being universal.

I think if this tool had detachments and you selected them and then filled in slots and got command points it would do most of what I'd want it to do. Points and putting in all the upgrades would be nice, but I get that'll likely be a non-free app.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

I"m surprised by the negative feedback. It took a while to get used to, but I think it's a pretty good release.

You have to change your Faction or Index periodically to get access to different things to add to your army list (i.e. Ultramarines only gives named characters). NOTE: Changing the faction or index does not erase what you've added to the army list.

It would be nice to be able to create detachments, but I think this initial release is really meant for Open Play. After all GW still needs to sell rulebooks.

No. It charges per month for access to all armies matched play points values.

Everything else is either A. Free to look at rules wise for units. B. $$ value detachments that allow you to play specific builds if you don't want to pay for an entire codex.

That is to say, Open Play, the game mode that explicitly tells you to skip making an army list and just put the models you want on the table anyhow. You don't need this tool to play that mode, heck it's kind of defeating the purpose.

Who is this supposed to be for? Narrative players still use detachments and this app doesn't support those.

This isn't much of a first step, it's at best a stumble.

I don't use power level, but it should at least have standards. This is missing so much that I would say its almost useless for power level games. They literally just had to copy their AoS army builder and they screwed that up.
