~25 weekly episodes also means you get to actually USE your deep bench of actors. Minor characters like Barclay and O'Brien shined in TNG because at some point you had to use someone other than Piccard and Data.

In Disco there was the cyborg chick, don't make me look up her name, she was the cyborg chick. And she was just there. Until they killed her. Then her funeral gave her a name, a background, a personality. It was one of the most memorable episodes of Disco.

(Apparently the actress was just sick of the makeup but they really liked her so they killed off the cyborg and brought back the same actress in a human role)

Shows need room to breath.

It could just be a sign of the times.

Streaming as it is now, with original content rather than “here’s some old shows you love, at the touch of a button” is still pretty new.

Which means you’ve writer’s rooms previously used to farting out 22-26 episodes now doing a relative handful.

Sometimes (Andor for instance) that much tighter focus works out really well, with barely an ounce of fat on the plot and pacing.

Sometimes it works out well, but leaves the audience wanting more (SNW).

Sometimes you just get a dreary show (last season of Reacher)

Mind you, there were old shows with the greater episode count which were predominantly guff (latter day X-Files and the increasingly dull ongoing conspiracy stuff).

Overall? Andor, Skellington Crew, Ahsoka*, SNW and Alien Earth are all encouraging signs that the write righters** are getting their time to shine, and producing solid shows under the tighter constraints.

*Hey, you don’t have to agree with everything I say

**entirely deliberate.

I think streaming networks also have to realize there's EVENT! shows where we show up and watch them on release on the 52" HD screen. That has to look at good as a movie.

And then there's stuff I watch in the corner of PC, or on my phone while doing dishes.

And both are fine.

I'd be happy with a weekly Trek show I can watch on my phone and be happy with. Star Trek Continues and the other Star Trek S4 were both fan shows and both fine. Just fine. Make something like that. Heck hire some fans and tell them here's your $20 go make an official fanfic.

Got to "Four and a half Vulcans" last night and it was quite entertaining. The highlight was how embarrassed my 12-year-old daughter was for most of the episode. She was losing it at the end when Spock was explaining Human culture to Doug.

And a perfectly cromulent season finale for SNW.

Gonna have to make time for a multiple season binge, I think.

Indeed. I'm already actively avoiding anything LEGO because I'm a completionist and one whiff would bankrupt my entire bloodline. One Piece almost broke me, Star Trek might.

I liked it enough, even though it was a forgone conclusion.
Spoiler:
Definitely digging into the whole Pike doesn't get a happy ending, and every day he edges closer to it, the more he loses, which is pretty sad. But hey, we got the start of Kirk and Spock's beautiful bromance.

I did enjoy the third season as a whole, in fact it might actually be better than S2. They still got some of the whimsical fun in there, but it wasn't as over the top as the musical episode (which, having rewatched it, was less enjoyable than the first time I saw it). Not sure how I feel about them continuing to ship Spock and La'an, although it's hard for me not to root for him as Christina Chong is fine as hell. The finale was a bit of a tear-jerker but was still excellent, and I'm grateful for the lack of a cliffhanger this time around. I'll echo the sentiments of others here and say that SNW continues to be the best of the new Star Treks.

Now bring on season 4!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Who knew that a mostly episode of the week, occasionally action oriented, occasionally thoughtful sci-fi series with good cast chemistry and a smattering of humour was the route to success. Oh, wait, Star Trek did, 6 decades ago…

I’ve really enjoyed SNW so far and it’s reminded me why I fell in love with Star Trek in the first place*. Looking back over the past few years it’s so disappointing to see how much mediocre stuff the franchise produced because they forgot what made TOS and the subsequent franchise so successful in the first place.

* although The Orville and Lower Decks had also been doing that quite a bit too, and I enjoyed both, they weren’t as “pure” as SNW.

Didn't care for the Vulcan episode, it would have fit Lower Decks but it was too unhinged for SNW, and with no in-universe justification - no psychic anomaly, no gods playing with reality, just 40 minutes of directed, malicious gakking on Vulcans for no reason.

I thought the SNW finale was mediocre. So because they had to meld the Gorn DNA into her she got all the ancestral knowledge of fighting evil from both species and gained super powers? Why doesn’t Spock get super powers since he’s a hybrid of two species as well? I mean the whole ancestral knowledge of fighting evil is stupid to begin with. The long range mind meld was also kind of dumb.

Just finished and oh boy Marie's story is dumber and more rushed than the average Dr. Who deus ex machina. The Inner Light bit pulls it back from the brink of unwatchability, however.

Really liked the the second to last episode, Enemy Mine is like a formative memory for me for some reason.

Ya, the finale was to "chosen one" for me. I'm tired of that trope. The stranded on a planet with a Gorn one was very good though. I kept thinking this episode should have been featuring Noonien-Sing becasue she's actually the one who has the most backstory with the Gorn. But it wasn't here because they needed her to blow that Gorn away with a hair-trigger response. They needed her hate.

But to be fair, up to that point Gorn were Green Xenomorphs, vaporizing them on sight is the sane response for any sentient being.

I have to assume they’d scanned the moon before beaming down and knew the Gorn was there in close proximity, otherwise the fact their rescue team was a fully armed security unit doesn’t make sense otherwise. Our strandee should have been prepared for that reaction and been putting themself in the way of the shot.

Wrapped up the season. I didn't have the same issues with the long distance mind meld as others did. I had more of an issue with an article I read that said this series negated the logic behind the end of "The Menagerie". They say that having Marie so deeply intwined with Chris made it make no sense that Chris would want to go back to Talos 4. I argue that it was Spock who came up with this solution for Pike, and that Pike agreed when he realized what the rest of his life would be like.

Finally, the young adult romance CW channel like romance series we've always dreamed of in Star Trek. Who amongst us wasn't watching something like Dawson's Creek or The OC and said "this should take place in Starfleet"? And it is in the good hands of the Discovery team so I've got all the confidence in it as a quality ST product.

Hell yeah. This is gonna be great! I haven't been this excited for a new Star Trek program since Star Trek Scouts was announced!

On the bright side, it can't be any worse than Section 31.
