So I’m outting together a IG army, and I’m looking for something different to use instead of the basic leman russ, something that can be used to represent one on the table, but is visually distinct, and I could pass off as a “locally produced main battle tank pattern”, like the Krieg regiments made up the Ragnorak Pattern to suit their needs during the civil war. Thoughts?

If it looks like a duck, smells like a duck, quacks like a duck.....

For casual or pickup play,so long as it looks cool, is roughly similar size, and I can easily distinguish your not Leman Russ from your not Hydra, field whatever you like. As for which one, I would suggest look at the original army your IG is based on, and see what tanks they use, and model something similar.

Happy modelling!

There's a thread somewhere here on Dakka that deals with toys that can be used a vehicles for 40K. Unfortunately, my search foo has failed me so I can't find it for you. IIRC it discusses using models like Tamiya and Revell WWI and WWII tanks and vehicles and gives the correct scales for what you need.

Those look so much better than standard LR!

There are a lot of other company options - but they generally weigh in as more expensive than 2nd hand gear.

The holy grail is for a Chinese company to make a cheap line of toys scaled to 40k!

Thanks for your help so far guys! I’m definetly interested more in kits like that gothic kv2 rather than repurposing historic model kits or toys.

If you want to get a little weirder, consider Dust's walkers. (Due to an Admech error, Sentinel and LR STC's were merged, resulting in walking tank designs...).

How did you make that Cuda? Was it a kit from somewhere or something you made and cast yourself?

Looks like a mixture of a KV-2 kit from someone like tamiya and some gw bits for the tracks, guns and hatch.

This is a conversion kit made by Anarchy Miniatures. Separate parts available here:
https://www.anarchymodels.co.uk/vehicle-conversion-parts-5-c.asp

Other than the hull and turret from Anarchy, the treads are double-wide Chimera tracks, which is a pretty strait forward conversion. The top hatch is indeed from a Rhino.

Tehnolog do some frighteningly cheap and actually quite fun models that you can get via eBay, the fabled “$6 Russ”. Hard plastic that glues just fine with regular plastic glue. Wee bit different dimensions but close enough.

Another option is the Project Durandal thread from here, but I don't think th3y are quite on production yet.
