WarCom announcement here

Whilst it’s likely to be the bigger, more established events really getting crunchy coverage, the promise of a diary has piqued my interest, as it helps asvertise even the smallest events, such as Gaming Clubs looking to start a local Tournament type thing,

All in all, better than a kick in the face.

A really neat idea with the Calendar which could easily build into GW even listing a lot of local clubs too. It's one thing to have your own store network (and clearly GW wants to focus on that) but listing the private clubs is another great thing; esp as so many can take place with very little internet advertising. So its very possible to have local clubs very near that you're totally unaware of!

While it is a great idea, wanting "at least 4-5 months" notice to list events limits its usefulness.

What I gathered from the article is that there will be an event finder of sorts like WOTC has, and if the event is large they may send a rep. Certain events may be officially endorsed by GW if they meet certain criteria.

That's a step, I guess. Hopefully they'll get proper organized events going, and provide prize support, and maybe rankings or something.

I'm a big pro-proxy/3rd party stuff/etc... guy... but I find absolutely reasonable for GW to want certaint standards, at least for the events where they offer prize support, etc...

So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

If this means GW will have 'control' over events, or what is allowed in those events- I would GW just ease the hell back and focus on making plastic toys and writing books and errata.

It invites a lot of problems. First we get 'ban lists' because someone says something negative about ADB's book, or because someone used third-party bits, or someone didn't have a physical hard copy of Imperial Armour, etc...

No. I don't want GW in ANY position where they can impose ANY rules outside of a Codex and gameplay Rulebook. If I wanted to deal with that, I'd play in the GW store where the shop owner is practically ramming merch in your rectum while you play.

Mob Rule is not a rule.

same as any sponsorship type arrangement really, you don't like the strings play the drums instead

GW were mad to walk away from the tournament scene, it can't have been that expensive to support (and what it could could probably be written off as part of the marketing budget anyway), but critically walking away meant a lot of the "official models only" stuff vanished and allowed other companies in (personally I'm glad that happened)

trying to regain it now won't be easy, especially as the terrain they love to supply isn't overly well suited to the actual rules

Events would be free to accept or deny GW attending simply by not entering into the program. I can see good justification that if GW is giving backing to an event the use of 3rd party models might well become more restricted at some events; however on the flipside if those events are getting official support and being boosted then whilst we might lose in one area we will gain in another.

Heck this might even get the events that don't sign up to get their act together on a more serious lvel if they want to stick around long term; so it could result in raising the overall standards of events across the board both sponsored and separate.

Calm down feller, GW can’t force themselves on an event.

It seems perfectly decent of GW offer to support if you want it.

Reckon the worst that’d happen is that any ‘live stream’ games would have to be GW models only.

Based on nova that's pretty much the extent. GW made the terrain on the table to match nova terrain but with their own product and non gw models couldn't be played on the stream.

Seems the easiest way to do it. Vetting each and every army would be an awful lot of extra work.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

It's all very well to say "events are free not to accept", but if the support GW ends up offering is significant the practical reality will be accept it or die off as loads of people attend the event with big prizes and a chance to get on WHTV or whatever.

Not to mention there's already a tendency with a lot of tournament types to see "official" anything as superior.

People always forget - they don't need to entice everybody, just enough to undermine the alternative to the degree people begin to question whether it's worth attending. Network Effect is everything with social hobbies.

Showing up to cover things but only allowing own-brand models and terrain on their own stream is fine, but even if that's the extent of any interference for now anyone who thinks they'll stop there if they get a chance is 'avin a larf.

Biggest problem with this would be if it means usage of 3rd party kits starts to decrease if so many events starts to ban non-GW models/parts due to this. Monopolies are bad.

Personally I'm happy I don't live in UK. GW has zero power to bother people with any restrictions on models used on tournament even if they want.

Now if GW doesn't be like a jerk and start war on 3rd party models with this then it can be good and even better for GW than war on 3rd parties.

Well, they'll only list events with 30+ participants, and support those with over 500 so I don't see it having much of an impact at club level.

Unless those club level players collect their armies with the idea of possibly using them bigger...

You could argue "ITC rules aren't relevant on club level without ITC rules" but then you have players preparing for tournaments etc so ITC standard becomes club standard as well. Units that aren't good in big tournaments are less seen because people don't want to waste money that sucks in bigger tournaments(though could work in less cut throat club level meta)

Same way GW doesn't even have to get even half the events follow GW's rules for it to affect proportionally larger group. If people start to feel too many tournaments starts banning their armies if they get 3rd party kits that will affect number of people willing to spend that money. Not all can afford to have armies for GW model only and all bets are off tournaments.

It’s only bad if GW’s offerings are objectively spank?
