I must confess I laughed my ass off, felt a little bad afterwards though.

Peregrine; for the love of cod can you please just let it go. Its done, its over, the people who own this site have decreed that they don't want it here and your ceaseless badgering and attempts to vilify the volunteer mods show exactly why. Please just go to the new site for politics or a different site or make a blog or whatever, but please just leave it alone.

Peregrine, are you so miserable in real life that you can't help but spread your misery on Dakka?

I'll admit that I'm lazy as F when it comes to moderating a political thread. It's enough work to read back through eight pages of a YMDC thread that has a Mod Alert to see if it's valid, how egregious it might be, if it needs an in-thread warning or a quiet private message, if anything contributed to the situation, etc. Context matters. Being fair matters.

I am ABSOLUTELY NOT willing to wade through that for politics, religion, or any other number of non-wargaming related topics. I'm going to come off as condescending here, but that's only because at this point I think that I'm a much better person than you are.

THIS FORUM FOR MAKE-BELIEVE GAMES

See? I made it simple.

I keep hearing you harp on how every hobby is inherently political, and yet you've not provided any evidence. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and you repeating this statement isn't really evidence. You need some actual... well, you need a TON of actual, outside examples. Outside of the pulpit you like to put yourself in.

I am THRILLED that Politics and Religion (the real-life versions) are banned. And the big advantage I have is, in the long run, I really don't give two stale farts as to what you think of me or the rest of the moderation team.

So rail on, and I'm actually a bit chuffed to have given you something new to rant about. It beats hearing the same doggerel over and over.

Well then you probably shouldn't post things like...

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/763286.page#10138684

The way to not endorse something is to simply not say anything about it and let people find their own way there, rather than posting links and saying it has the blessing of the mod team.

I am appalled that this is considered acceptable behavior for a moderator here.

Do you really think that removin discussions of politics and religion from the OT is going to detract from your ability to discuss the tabletop gaming hobby on Dakka because you can’t figure out which posters are Nazis? If you can’t engage in a mundane superficial pleasant exercise like discussing shared interests with fellow hobbyists without first finding out their political positions and determining if they pass your personal litmus test of acceptability then that’s a you problem not a Dakka problem. The site requiring that Dakkanauys discuss the hobby with others in a polite manner is just basic decency it isn’t some kind of tacit endorsement of Nazis and it’s honeatly worrisome that you see it that way.

You're missing the point here. The claim was made that political discussions make people hate each other, the reality is that people are already going to hate each other and open political discussion just removes the illusion that we're all one big happy family. And it amazes me that this is actually a subject of discussion. I think virtually everyone would agree that if a Nazi shows up they aren't welcome just because they left the swastika flag at home. They're still a Nazi, and who wants to pretend otherwise? So the basic principle is established, that politically extreme or objectionable people do not belong in the community, the only disagreement is on where the line should be drawn and exactly who should be excluded.

And you highlighted the problem with the situation in your own words describing the forum: "mundane superficial". IOW, nothing of substance, nothing of value. You have to limit everything to inane small talk to be sure that you don't accidentally find out something objectionable about the other person. If the goal is to make conversation mundane and superficial, well, what is the point in even having a forum at all?

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

The issue is when all the other moderators and most other posters agree with him, what ya gonna do Johnny?

Just walk away, this has long gone past any sort of objection, valid or otherwise, and is starting to read a little like a genuine mental health issue.

Hey guys, I'm not comfortable with where we've ended up in this thread. People have the right to post unpopular opinions, that's actually part of what makes a discussion forum work! I'm going to lock this for the moment...

And just to reiterate my clarifying post about The Wasteland from last page in case anyone is just viewing the end of the thread. I think it's well worth a try, but it has absolutely no connection to Dakka in any way! Any questions on that, just PM me:

Looks like I need to clarify my post guys:

What I meant was simply, we'd welcome folks to continue talking about politics elsewhere, but we're no longer allowing it in Dakka. Hordini (quite generously) immediately volunteered that folks should consider The Wasteland, and I personally think this is a brilliant idea since it's always been a community of Dakkanauts.

However, it is definitely not officially endorsed, or connected to Dakka in any way, shape, or form. It's just an alternate site that has historically been a place Dakka posters go to blow off steam, and discuss things that don't fit on Dakka (we originally had no OT section here at all, for instance). For a history on how it got started, check this article:

https://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/The_History_of_Dakka

If you have any more questions about my (RiTides) take on this, please PM me and I'd be happy to talk about it! But, this was just a suggestion, and if it's not for you there are lots of other options to talk politics. It's really up to you!

Any questions, again just PM me. Cheers
