You don’t Beat him, you just slow him down. While he’s incredibly powerful, he’s not at all agile anymore, so dumping environmental stuff on him like that just to buy time is an effective strategy. I thought it was handled quite well.

Also made me realise Maul is the only Apprentice Sidious had that was purely Sith. Dooku and Anakin were both formerly Jedi.
So unless there’s one before Maul, he’s the only one not taught Jedi techniques. Which might’ve been interesting for Vader?

I think this first season of Maul Shadow Lord was surprisingly good. I had lower expectation but I found myself enjoying this series quite a bit. The animation style has come a long way from the Clone Wars and Rebels all the while remaining very similar.
I was a bit disapointed by the rather disappointing death of Rook Kast. I rather liked her as a sympathetic villainess and expected a more heroic death that all the other characters had instead of getting bodied off screen by Darth Vader.
I was also curious when Vader was revealed as to how they would handle the voice now that James Earl Johns has passed. I was wondering if they would use a voice module to modify another actor's voice or if they would go for Scott Lawrence who voiced the character in couple of video games (my prefered choice). Turns out they chose not to choose by making him uncharacteristically quiet and so we lost on some of Vader's snarkiness.

JEJ signed over his vocal rights for AI use a while back so it ain't that.
Probably going for the direction of Vader being truly menacing like at the end of Rogue One.

Yeah. It also suggests that it’s only really Ahsoka, Kenobi and Luke that can, for varying reasons, really get under his skin. His complete silence in this fight suggests to me he had contempt for his opponents. Like they’re not worth the energy of actually getting angry at. It also suggests that to some degree, he was playing with them, fighting only as hard as he needed to, rather than just obliterating them.
Art wise I loved the grimy feel of this. Star Wars has of course a long history of muck and grime in plain sight. But here it felt extra. A further element of visual language showing how beaten down everything is in the face of the Empire.
This is night and day with the ultimately rather dull Bad Batch. Yes, BB had some moments. But for the most part stuff just sort of happened with little consequence, especially in the second season.
Maul? Well we now see his in to Crimson Dawn, and of course we know how that all ultimately turns out at two future points. I could go for further seasons leading up to from Solo, up to his arrival in Rebels.

I wonder where they intend to go with Devon. When we see Maul in Rebel he is basically in lonely sith-hobbo mode and the first thing he seeks is to take Ezra as his pupil. This leads me to think Devon is out of the picture either after a falling out or simply dead.

I don’t think she’ll survive the series. Either an Inquisitor will get her, or Maul will turn on her.

People have thrown around the idea she's the future Darth Talon. Granted Talon is both Legends, a controversial Legends at that, and from 80+ years in the future but a popular design.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Maul next shows up in Solo and later dies in Rebels right? A duel with Obi Wan?

Yup.
Cameo as High Heedyin of Crimson Dawn in Solo, right at the end. Then shows up in Rebels a seemingly broken man, and over some episodes ends up confronting Kenobi in what for me is one the absolute best Star Wars moments. If not the best.

Apparently the name Darth Talon and her look was taken from some of GL's ideas for a sequal trilogy, where she and Maul are important. So its Almost cannon to canon to legend canon to ?

Finally saw the Acolyte. Just one question. Did they watch any other Star Wars movies before making this?

Maul is the first Star Wars in awhile that left me wanting more. Kind of annoying actually. How long till season 2?
Lathe Biosas wrote:Finally saw the Acolyte. Just one question. Did they watch any other Star Wars movies before making this?
If you wanted to, you could notice some cool ideas in the bones of Acolyte like how it asks 'was Qui Gon Jin just an donkey-cave taking Anakin, an impressionable child?' and 'isn't the way the Jedi order raises kids kind of doomed to make them boring sticks in the mud or sociopaths' but like... None of that really ends up mattering that much because the plotting of Acolyte is atrocious, Every plot point is obvious because the foreshadowing is dismal and the story run of the mill for all the questions it deigns to suggest and then do nothing very interesting with, most of the characters don't actually matter, and the series spends a lot of time chewing on a story that really should have been a film instead of a series.
On top of which it just has a lot of WTF stupid moments that I could rant about for a long time, like how no one ever questions timelines in Acolyte, but of course they don't. Time is a warp in that series where people are always able to reach where they need to be but only exactly when they need to be there, no matter how little sense it makes for everyone to reach the same spot at the same time no matter how far they had to travel to get there or how one of them should have been there days ago.

She came out of Star Wars Legacy a comic series by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema from the 2000s which stared Luke Skywalker's drug-addicted bounty hunting son.
It was a dark series that went to dark places. I really liked it but apparently there's a lot of fans and folks at Lucasfilm who hated it.

I think it does a good job portraying the Jedi the way I pictured them from Obi-Wan's description in ANH. It's just a complete disaster in terms of storytelling that any of the things it does well are wildly overshadowed.

Shouldn't have Anakin's blade turned red during the prequel trilogy?

I think it takes a conscious effort to channel the negative emotions into the crystal to affect it that way. Anakin never did that. That's my headcanon, at least.

Forcing kyber crystals to bleed was something Disney added in general though its generally been a pretty popular concept. The cover here is that Osha's saber is damaged and she's in physical contact with the crystal when it happens.
Granted, Vader was wearing gloves when he made his red saber but if I had a nickel for every time a story treated gloved hands as direct contact... I'd have way more than two nickels. It's still too easy of a switch compared to the way its been depicted in the comics, but by that same token if I had a nickel for every time comics depicated the Force as a more bombastic energy source than the films.... I'd have sooooo many nickels.

Acolyte just goes for "OMG WOW" over stuff actually making sense, which is fine when you don't have like what 40 years of material cutting about but not so much the other way around.

To be specific, the first run of the series focuses on Cade Skywalker who is something like Luke's great-great-great grandson. I don't think it's ever specified how many generations removed he is. The series is set 127 years after Return of the Jedi so he's 3 or 4 generations down from Luke and Mara Jade.
There was a second run focused on Aina Solo that started but I don't think it finished.
The Legacy run was a sort of mixed bag. It read a lot like something out of the 80s and the Dark Age of Comics but it was like 20-30 years late? It had some cool ideas like the One Sith as a villain and the Imperial Remnant having fully formed an independent state in the Galaxy. And the Imperial Knights who were probably the coolest part of the setting but were never much the focus of what was going on. The Jedi Order got destroyed again as they often do and that's probably the most boring part of the story. That and Cade just being a sad boy with a bland story line overall but he banged the hot red chick so I guess there's that!

Thank you yes I mean to say Grandson, or even further down the line, I don't remember the exact generation either.
One cool thing about it was you have Jedi, rebels, Imperials and Sith in great numbers (the rule of 2 had been replaced by the One Sith!). It had its ups and downs but was overall pretty good and IIRC actually ended with a conclusion. Along with Dark Empire it's on my short list of comics I want to see adapted.
