Hi all, Just picked up some furniture for my new place and the packaging has some potential. I'm thinking something like this (Guardian for scale):
Any other ideas?
How can I build this in to semi nice looking scenery? Obviously is made of card and paper so it's not very sturdy to paint/transport, etc... Any suggestions? (Disclaimer: never built scenery before.)

That's not bad! Spray it black and brush it with metal all over and it'd look OK. Add some details, doors windows. It's a start.
Add some guard rails to the walkway and tops of the buildings perhaps?

Interesting, but I have found those to be extremely light.
Any plans for mounting or how to make them less likely to blow away from the table top?
Cheers,
CB

Honestly, I'd say keep it as it is...if you want to use it. It'd be a waste to put real time and efffort into some subpar materials...however, it looks excellent as a quick "throw on the table" option. I just wouldn't invest any time or money in it.

The question I'd ask is what do you want it to read as? Corrugated metal? Hewn rock?

Honestly my thought process hasn't advanced much further than "huh, these look like they could make cool buildings or something...". (Moving has been a long arduous task!)
I just moved half way across the world and left most of my gaming stuff behind. Because of that, I want to get in to Kill Team because it is way smaller scale and will be more manageable.
So really I want to make some kind of buildings/structure that is somewhat modular so I can have something a little bit interesting to play on.
Hadn't thought about how light they are, but I wasn't planning on mounting them, since the idea is to be cheap and simple. I might just deal with the fact that it might blow away occasionally... But the breeze in my apartment is minimal, so it's a risk I am happy to take!
As for how I want it to look, I can't say I've thought about it much. Obviously their current appearance lends themselves to corrugated iron, which is also thematically appropriate for Kill Team. Maybe I could cut them down in to storage container sized pieces? Or maybe I can put card around those vertical sections to have a smoother appearance for a building or two? Maybe a mix of both could look good, give some variety, and still be cheap and easy?
Keep suggestions and comments coming!

Just get a metallic spray paint and go with the steel look. Get artist's putty/Blu-tak to temporarily attach the buildings to the playing surface. (Blu-tak is also reusable). This will give you a quick start so you can start playing ASAP. As time and money permit you can add fancier pieces.
Also, there are a few DIY threads in the Painting and Modeling forum which may be useful

This is a great idea. The materials are easy to collect and the physical structure looks good to build. +1 on metallic spray.

There are also textured spray paints that give a more stone like look.

See if you can find a picture of the classic Necromunda terrain if you want ideas on how multi-level modular terrain works.
You can't buy it now, unless you want to spend a small fortune on Ebay, but it should give some ideas.
I'm thinking of starting a thread to show some of my scenery made of cardboard.
I'm sure cardboard scenery is generally reviled for a reason (it mostly looks terrible) but I've been experimenting with some ways to add texture (and to hide the fact it's cardboard) and I think I have some results that look fine - considering it costs nothing and takes a very short time.
For a basic 'roughened' finish try mixing some fine sand and PVA, paint that all over the card before undercoating. I've also made some proper textured paint bu mixing some leftover masonry paint, pva, filler and sand. It's still drying but the results look good, like a rough concrete finish, which is what I was after.
And why not stick a couple of coins to the bottom of the boxes if you want to stop them moving?
