What was the novel where there was a serial killer, and it was a detective type novel where the agent of chaos was sent to try and get a book that the Emperor had signed in blood?

So long since I read that, but wasn't that mainly about Valdor finding the four assassins and ordering them to kill Horus, I'm pretty sure the story I'm talking about was a novel itself, maybe a short story.

It's definitely Nemesis. The detective story was the B story in that novel, while the assassins were the A story. They two storylines come together at the end.

Actually you could be looking for Legacy. It’s a Shria Calpurnia Novel, was a part in her Omnibus ”enforcer”. An arbite need to solve an inheritance dispute about a rogue trader charter signed by the Emperor himself (in blood). Of course the charter is an insanely valuable artifact so various factions try to get their hands of it. Plenty of detective work and killings involved.

I actually cross referenced Nemesis and Legacy. Unfortunately there’s no references from one book to the other. It’s a shame because they have some similar themes. Nemesis is set in 30k, Legacy is set In 40k.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

Was it the second Shira Calpurnia novel? There was a Rogue Trader's Charter signed in the Emperor's blood.

It really sounds like Nemesis. The serial killer he mentioned is Spear, the weird Pariah with a daemon bound to his skin that was sent to collect some of the Emperor's blood in order to assassinate him.

Although I have not read Legacy, and what the others describe sounds really similar(both involve a RT charter signed with big E's blood apparently), so who knows?
