Paint job looks fine, its just that the head looks wrong floating there in a sea of darkness whilst having no clear shading/highlighting to reflect the arching over armour cover. Strikes me that the head and body were painted separately (understandable) but no shading was done on the head to account for it.

Also might have worked better if the painter had gone for less shadowing and instead painted the area around the head brighter instead of black.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Yup. Can't wait to see what the model actually looks like under the paintjob.

I bet the situation was:

-Giuseppe, we need this painted asap.
-But it's christmas man, and I still haven't bought any presents, and i've loads of commissions...
-Do it or you fired
-OK, fine

That's a terrible model with a worse paint job (still better than I could do!). Very disappointing reveal.

Everyone keeps saying the model is mediocre. However I want to remind people we thought the same thing about that lizard monster until we saw it without the paintjob.

Part of me wonders if they're aiming for "realistic hobbyist level paint job" to inspire the vibe of: here's what yours might be like. Possibly to combat the wealthy persons GW image they have? No idea but it's inexplicable otherwise, just like their unwillingness to release pretty much anything 40k.

If that's true it's happened very recently, as he regularly shares his paint jobs on Facebook and I've seen recent stuff, such as the Blood Angels, in the last couple of weeks.

Plus it's obviously one of his efforts, the style is pretty distinctive.

It's a shame they felt like they needed a paintjob on him when clearly there was little to no time for it.
It would have been better to just have pictures of the actual mini imho.
That's clearly a speed paint so I'd love to know the time spent on it

Don't get me wrong, he's not terrible by any stretch but I think it's fair to say the paintjob makes the reveal a bit underwhelming?

Still a better job than 75 percent of those here on Dakka, my stuff included.

75% of the stuff on Dakka isn't being used by a major company to market their products.

People don't take issue with this guy's work because it's bad in the sense of lacking talent & technique, but because it's bad in the sense that it rarely shows off the actual miniature.

Both of those are correct.

For a demo paintjob, it’s not what we’ve come to expect from FW. That doesn’t mean it’s objectively poor. Just not their usual standard.

It's not terrible but feels worse than other characters. I compare it to my conversion and the only thing I feel envious of is the base.

Eh, I don't like both SW and FW paint jobs, but this is honestly not that bad. Far less ugly highlights than usual, head is problematic yes but it's mostly down to black neck cover. If it was painted any other color to avoid 'floating head' effect, and if the hair was a bit darker, it would be pretty OK.

My main gripe is the bolter. Why the hell it has front handle used only on PA models? The rear grip should be where the front handle is, like on DA termie plasma cannon, then it would be both more balanced and wouldn't look so ridiculously long...

At least the wolfskin doesn't look as terrible as the other FW Space Wolf Terminators. Good God. Those were heinously awful.

Isnt it just! Golly it’s a shocker, blending is barely evident, the paint looks rather thick in places. Usually I think people exaggerate how ‘bad’ they claim studio paint jobs are, given the standard of even better hobbyists, but this isn’t good.

He always had that written under his profile, iirc. As Azreal mentioned, the style is very distinctive. Unless he just gave some tutorials to another painter, who then copied. That still wouldn't explain why the axe blade looks so amateurish.

So he's no longer employed by FW but has set up his own studio and sub contracts. He's still doing FW studio pieces and this SW looks like his work.

Beautful models that people destroy with sad tabletop quality (and pile on a ton of mud effect to the base and feet to make it "gritty")
