So I'm thinking of starting an Ulthwe army, and I'm looking for a black primer to use instead of the white I've been using so far. Do auto shop type primers work will for that?

This is one I've been looking at, as it is affordable and available near me:

Lots of people do use autoprimers of various types and brands, I would be hesitant about the one you linked here however as it says its good for filling cracks and imperfections, which on a miniature means detail!

I would be careful with those, if they are "sandable" or "filler" primers it means they're meant to build up texture. You could certainly use just a normal, all-purpose black primer though.

Danielle Rae,

One thing I have learned with car primers is use it sparingly. Car sprays are designed to fill in gaps and nicks and they will do the same with your models if you spray on too much.

Hope that helps,

I've used the Dupli-color sandable primer for years, ever since Ali McVey (of Studio McVey) recommended it on the Privateer Press forums. I haven't used a different brand in over a decade.

When I restored my motorcycle I used a sandable automotive primer over a fiberglass patch on the gas tank and it built up quite a bit (which is what I wanted so that I could sand it all back down smooth). I don't think it was Dupli-Color, though.

I don't know about Dupli but I use Krylon "flat" black primer and have never bothered to try anything else.

I also use Krylon and Rustoleum a lot and they work very well. They're also only $3-4 per can.
