Hey everyone,

I'm looking for opinions on a possible list for a tournament in May. I'll need to buy, build and paint a fair few units for whichever list I build, so looking to figure out which direction to go early.

Healthy Balanced Diet Sautekh Necrons

Battalion:
Imotekh the Stormlord
Cryptek: Canoptek Cloak, The Abyssal Staff

10 x Immortals
10 x Immortals
10 x Immortals

1 x Nightbringer

6 x Wraiths
3 x Scarabs

Spearhead:
1 x Lord: Hyperphase Sword, Veil of Darkness

1 x DDA
1 x DDA
1 x DDA

What do you think? I had Destroyers over the Wraiths in the first draft, but I feel like the combat flank of wraiths and Nightbringer gives me some flexibility. The DDA triplets are standard at this point, and Imotekh make sense with the 3 x Immortals plus his storm is a nice psuedo smite. Any ideas for changes? The tournament was described to me as 'competitive, but not insane' so not expecting to run into 100% grossness, but I'm pretty sure it'll be Knights a go-go. However it will also essentially be modified versions of the new CA missions, so Knights have their own problems.

Anyway, yeah, what do you think?

P.s. some tournament rules here. They don't hugely affect this list, but do affect what I'll run into:

• Battle forged matched play armies only, of at most 3 Detachments
• One detachment must be chosen as the primary detachment
• The Primary Detachment must be the detachment with the highest points value
• The Warlord must be in the Primary Detachment
• ONE special Character may be taken per army
(The Gellarpox and Farstriders do not count as special characters for this purpose)
• Warlord Traits and Relics can only be used by the Primary Detachment
• Army Specific Stratagems can ONLY be used from the codex of the Primary Detachment
(So the main rulebook ones can be used by the whole army)

I'd consider changing one of the Doomsday Arks to a Tesseract Ark, if you can find the points. The ability to have one of your anti-tank units move without severely reducing it's damage output gives you a bit more mobility in an army that a) has to castle (Immotekh + Cryptek + 30 Immortals for 5++ Chrono, RP boost, and MWBD) and b) remain immobile (DDAs) to fire at full effect.

I would still say Destroyers over Wraiths, but that's a personal preference of mine; I have a very hard time not taking 6 Destroyers in ever Necron list I write (but I really should give it a shot sometime).

I'm assuming you're taking Immortal Pride for Imotekh as well.

Yeah, I may swing back to the destroyers, but I'll do some play-testing on that. Wraiths are just a fantastic road-block, which is something the list otherwise lacks. The Tesseract Ark is an interesting shout. Again, I'll playtest that before I buy the third Ark.

Imotekh has to take the Sautekh trait (CP farm) and you only get his +1 CP if you take him as Warlord, so stuck there. But honestly, I don't think you need Immortal Pride unless you're rocking warriors blobs. The CP is mainly going to be used for Ark rerolls and the odd tech choice stratagem (Wraiths adv and charge, wraiths reanimation, solar pulse, Smite scarabs etc). There isn't much in in the list that demands CP to function.

does nightbringer count as a special character?

That's a good point, I'll have to check. I wouldn't have thought so, but it does say you can only bring him once per army.

If he does, I can make him a Transcendent with a few alterations I guess.

With the tournament rules, would suggest putting the doomsdays in the same detachment, drop the Lord and night bringer, and see about getting two triarch stalkers

that way, you can get your immortals and doomsdays rerolling. and use all good strats on anything in the army

I wouldnt. A Tark is inferior to a DDA when it comes to anti tank.

Destroyers only get to kill one enemy unit with EP. Then your opponent realizes how dangerous they are, and wipes them out. Wraith suffer the same fate, but they need much more firepower to kill them.

I party agree, but i would go with one stalker and use the rest of the points on scarabs.

Well, I would agree here with pfreak that Wraiths are superior to Destroyers, especially if you have firepower elsewhere (here in the form of DDAs).

Nightbringer and deceiver are both unique named characters.
for the mortal wounds potential I'd say he's worth keeping more than Stormlord .. drop him for an overlord and use the stratagem to buff your immortals

Well, I'd prefer the Deceiver over the Nightbringer any day
as he allows to reposition part of the army before the battle begins.
This may give you a tactical advantage over the enemy which should not be neglected.

He does, but he's got less punch for more cost too. If I was running more combat or gauss units, I'd definitely be running him to reposition them, but as it stands I really just have a mobile gunline that doesn't need magic-ing up the field. With that said, I've now realised that Nightbringer counts as a character, so I have to choose between Imotekh and Transcendent C'Tan or Overlord and Nightbringer. The second option is a ton cheaper, but at the cost of command points.

As to dropping the Lord and the Nightbringer... I feel like the Mortal wound output of the C'Tan is something I want on the table, not to mention the backup for the Wraiths. With that said, I could drop the Lord and take Imotekh down to just an Overlord, then I might be able to squeeze in a Stalker.

Healthy Balanced Diet Necrons Take 2

Battalion:
Overlord: Warscythe.
Cryptek: Canoptek Cloak, The Abyssal Staff

10 x Immortals
10 x Immortals
10 x Immortals

1 x Triarch Stalker
1 x Nightbringer

5 x Wraiths
7 x Scarabs

1 x DDA
1 x DDA
1 x DDA

8 CP total (could spend one to get the Veil of Darkness on the Overlord, just as a toolbox item).

What do you think? It keeps the combat detachment at mostly full health, while buffing the scarabs wound count and throwing a Stalker in there. Sad to lose the Stormlord, but either him or the Nightbringer had to go anyway. I still have some decent MW output anyway, and can use Phaeron's Will to buff the Immortals.

I'd say that list is less all-round than mine. It's all guns. I want to have some combat units and some staying power to give me some ability to hold the middle of the board. Also I'd never bring Imotek without at least 2 full squads or immortals.

I felt the same but I really wanted the DDA'S and the destroyers the sacrifice was a couple of immortals. But idk would like to fill it back up.. I don't really like the wraiths as much as everyone else does... Mortal wounds kill them flat JS.

Is there any necron not getting killed right away by MWs ?? Protect wraith with scarabs.

Yeah, basically this. The scarabs give them some early game cover and after that their job is largely to get shot by everything anyway, hopefully tieing up and eating a few choice targets whilst also serving as a screen for the Nightbringer. They're one of the most effective distraction carnifexes in the game for my money, partially because of their intimidating frame and refusal to die. They're not heavy damage dealers, but people can't resist pouring everything into them anyway. Beyond that, they give me some board control options that we're otherwise lacking.

Dont underestimate 9 novokh scarabs, re-rolling all failed hit rolls. They get even better with a crimson haze warlord, getting additional attacks, failed hits from those attacks can also be re-rolled.

Yeah I usually play Novokh in my friendly games, just because most of the units I started with were from Forgebane, so very combat heavy. Novokh necrons in general are scary.

Back to my list, what do you all think for Warlord trait? It's basically between Hyperlogical Strategist and Immortal Pride. I think given that I only have 8 CP, a little farming will be useful but at the same time, not having to worry about morale on the Immortal might pay for itself.

Well, your opponent will wipe out the entire unit when you choose immortal pride. That way you force him to maybe spend more firepower on that task than needed. If you pick HS you get to farm CP and maybe get the 2CP needed to automatically pass the morale check. You may not even get any CP back.

Yeah. I'll do some playtesting with Pride, see how much it comes into play. Cheers everyone.

Btw I dropped 1 scarab and 2 immortals from a squad to fit in the final wraith. Making them as annoying to remove as possible seemed like a sensible choice.
