Unfortunately for civies and crew applications you don't usually have a rifle across the chest to help obscure the zipper.
Look at the figure on the left. Is the zipper too obvious for you? Now this is also a close up. It's less obvious at a distance of 3' when gaming. Also, painting dark colors should hide the zipper at distance, while here the contrast is more apparent.

Not as bad, but I still don't like it and I know it would bother me.
The zipper is bad enough, but it's like a padlock or a testicle just dangling at the end of that thing. Ugh...

Wargames Atlantic, in my opinion, seem to have found a niche in the market by making attractive sets that, in a lot of cases, wargamers didn't know they needed.
For some wargamers, WA have produced sets they needed but never thought they'd see in plastic.
Either way, WA are certainly doing well in my allocation of hobby funds.

Hopefully they’ll take criticisms on renders more seriously next time, before moving into tooling.
hence why I harped on the Ooh Rah's leg straps. On some of the renders they look fine, on others, they look like the guy is wearing long rubber socks, like a fisherman.

Just had a gander at the new Boxers up at McDougall Designs. Like many War Games Atlantic kits, they don't immediately fit my usual collection genre (Sci Fi,) but they look like they'd be absolutely perfect for something interesting. They have essentially no armor, which I was interested to discover helps give them a lot of versatility. For fantasy aficionados, they're a great resource for monks or impressed Cathay grunts. For martial arts fans, they'd fit easily into a Shaw Brothers peasants revolt milieu. For cyberpunkers, one could kitbash them with some techno bits for Blade Runner aesthetics as warriors or (with no-weapon arm swaps) civvies.
If there are any problematic elements of racist caricature in their facial features, I'm not detecting them (at least at the resolution of available photos,) and the expressions seem to range appropriately from serious and determined to pissed off.
I really like the looks of this kit, which seems like an inspired idea executed well. Definitely down for a sprue of these. I'll work them into my jumble of futuristic minis somehow.

I don't think WGA ever had any problem with racist caricatures with their faces and everyone seems relatively well-represented, from Chinese and Japanese (soon), to Africans (Senegalese) and native Americans like the Aztecs.
I know people did complain about the fact one of the improvised weapons in the boxer kit was resembled a cleaver, for some reason, even if it was a very accurate depiction of a very popular Chinese vegetable knife.

That would be a fantastic kit for Fistful of Kung Fu.
That McDougall allows you to buy by the sprue means that a warband for almost any Song of Blades based game can be put together for between 9 and 15 bucks.
Another Sprue I should have put in my order!

Most skirmish games have some sort of Tong/Boxer/Triad type faction that these are great for!

Big zippers are back in cannon fodder 2!
I know this is a deeply important and emotional issue that divides our community, so to the many people who can't get enough big zippers, while I don't share your preference, I'm happy for you. I never had to deal with green-stuff correcting oversized zipper aesthetics until these cannon fodder sets came along, whereas you've had to re-sculpt and enlarge normal-sized zippers on every single mini you've ever purchased. In all fairness, it's about time you finally get a few big zipper sets.
I think I've learned an important lesson.
-----------------
All snark aside, WGA fans: I really like a lot of what they do, and will probably end up ordering a sprue of cannon fodder 2 anyway, just to get more bald female heads for my Maelstrom's Edge Karist force. I'll just have to file away those pesky explosive collars.
New topic: Has anyone tried Kitbashing WGA Cannon fodder and Victoria miniatures conscripts?
Victoria miniatures have a selection of convict heads that include tributes to Riddick, Hannibal Lecter, and probably a good many other famous characters I don't recognize that could be fun to mix in to a set. While the Victoria line is resin and much more pricy if you're buying whole units, it is also sold as individual bits, so buying some arms, legs, heads, what-have-you to mix-and-match with WGA's set is, on paper, feasible - the critical factor being whether or not Victoria and WGA scale well together. Does anyone know?

[Raises hand] That would be me.
The arms are Victoria Miniature Close Combat Arms, which are US$8.99 for five pairs. They fit well. There is a club arm that is sculpted oddly; it's on the blue cyclops. It's hard to make out, but it bends backwards. I tried imitating the action with my own arm, and it is possible, but uncomfortable, and not a position from which one can strike easily or quickly. In retrospect, I should have glued that arm with the club parallel to the ground, so the odd bend would be camouflaged by positioning.
Edit: The zippers are a bit large for my taste, but it is not a deal-breaker for me. When Miniature Market gets the female Cannon Fodder in I'll order a box and the Bulldogs while I'm at it.

I can't tell that close from the picture, but if the zippers are big that's a mostly-no-thanks for me.
I may also order a sprue of the females to have some more female conversion parts. However, with Stargrave female crew around and more female sets on the way I'm not sure I even care enough to bother with the cannon fodder.
It does strike me as another evidence that we're in the golden age of gaming that I can look at a plastic female trooper kit that would have been a unicorn 5 years ago and say "Meh, no thanks, I'll have the other one!"

The Stargrave Crew 2 is good. But only 2 Unhelmeted female human heads. There arent a ton in cannon fodder 2 but there are more than 2. Edit: There are more than 2... but with like cyber eyes and other high-tech stuff.
I plan on using Heads 85, 84, 83, 82, 81, 78, and 79 for the actual Cannon fodder girls. They will be convicts. Heads 3, 76, 35, 75, 74a, 73 and 72 will be used for fantasy conversions.
That leaves 32, 4, 69, 68, 21, 2, 34, 21, 65, 66, 67, 21, 61, 60, 59, 57, 62, 70, and 72 as extras.

Looking at the whole Sprue, there's definitely enough there to get me to purchase one or two of them for bits.
As for the zippers, they look even worse on the females then the males. The exception to the zippers in both cases is in both cases may be as hazmat or space suits with the hazmat helmets. In that arrangement, the giant zipper seems somewhat more plausible.

Thanks for that. Think I might give those Victoria heads a try. Automatically Appended Next Post: Eilif wrote:The exception to the zippers in both cases is in both cases may be as hazmat or space suits with the hazmat helmets. In that arrangement, the giant zipper seems somewhat more plausible.
In a close combat situation, wouldn't a giant exposed zipper be pretty risky to have on a spacesuit?

In space close combat a needle is pretty risky thing.
If I did them as spacesuits they'd not be equpped for close combat. More likely as ranged or civilian workers.

You're welcome. Just to clarify, those are Victoria ARMS, not heads. While I do have some Victoria Miniatures heads, I've yet to use them. But as you can see, the Stargrave heads work too.
An aside. There are VERA gun arms (looks like a rotary autocannon to me) at Victoria Miniatures. I bought one, and discovered while they do fit Stargrave plastics, the join at the back is not flush. Putty work is required to hide the gap. Still, it is a good looking support weapon, and when I again order from Victoria Miniatures I'll purchase one or two more.
