Hi.

I am an old Warhammer fantasy player. I have plenty of Khemri models, and I like them a lot. But I understand they are not playable anymore? (The fan index did not get updated to the new edition I belive?)

But I can not for the love of me understand AoS. All of the old armies are out right? Or at the very least divided into very small armies. (High elves are like 4 different smaller armies, right?) So the 'official' armies have battle tomes. And those tomes have like 5 to 6 unit enrties, as opposed to the bloated armies of old?

But the sigmar warriors seems like they have REALLY many units toc hoose from. Please comment. I am confused.

I realise the gameplay is very different.

Khemri is still playable, they just got point updates in the newest General's Handbook (which releases once a year with new/expanded rules and reworked point costs).

Most of the old armies are still playable either if they have a Battletome or as default Grand Alliance armies. I play Destruction with old Ogre Kingdoms, mixed with some monsters. I works out okay-ish.

Not only Stormcast have a lot of units, Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch, Skaven are pretty big, though being the posterboys for AoS, they get a lot of GW love, that much is true.

What would I need to play Khemri these days?

Models, rule book, generals hanbook. Are there stats somewhere?

Rules are all in the app under "Death>Tomb Kings" or https://www.games-workshop.com/resources/PDF/AoS_Compendiums/warhammer-aos-tomb-kings-en.pdf

Core Book or Legions of Nagash gives you the default GA: Death allegiance abilities. General's Hanbook or the Warscroll Builder gives you the points.

AoS in terms of models, began its life primarely from the old WHF armies. Moust got renamed and restructured into new "armies", thouse that dident got a warscroll compendium.

Tomb kings are a legacy army. GW dont make thouse models at all anymore nor support them as an AoS faction, but they made a warscroll compendium for them, meaning tomb kings can be used as an army in current AoS.

you can find the compendiums containing warscrolls and pointcosts for WHF armies here:

The GHB 2019 brought back their matched play points.

However, if you are a competitive player trying to do well in tournaments you may want to pause and do some research into whats good.

Tomb Kings are probably not going to do you any favors.

If you are ok with that, rock on.

No, I am just looking to dip my toes into AOS. As long as I do not play very competetive I should be fine. although I have all of the models, soI should be able to change things up if I need to.

As long as the matched play points a balanced I should be fine.

What do I need though? I got the models, I have the war scrolls, I have local opponents and a place to play. What else do I need?

- Rulebook?
- Generals handbook 2019 (asuming I do not use battlescribe all the way but that seems off.)

What are the 'grand alliance' bonuses, and what are the endles spell things?

as for endless spells, i belive any in this box: https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Age-Of-Sigmar-Malign-Sorcery-2018-eng?utm_source=Warhammer+Community&utm_medium=Post&utm_content=Aos07112018
just remember they too have a point cost that is included in your army total.

for grand alliance, generic death. you find the bonuses in GHB.

Matched play points are not balanced. They are as balanced as 40k and whfb points ever were.

I think the rulebook is the only resource with the complete breakdown of how the game is played in 2nd edition, if I'm wrong someone please correct me.

General's Handbook 2019 is your up-to-date living document outlining what your points costs are and what the matched play rules are.

You might be able to forgo one or both of these if your opponents are down with teaching you the game system for introductory purposes but I'd consider them baseline for anybody who isn't absolutely brand new to the hobby.

Generally speaking AoS' matched play format involves an army consisting of one common faction referred to as an 'Allegiance', your allegiance can be one of the four Grand Alliances: Order, Chaos, Death, Destruction; these represent the very broadest categories and serve to separate which factions would ally with one another and which ones they absolutely never would. Alternatively, your allegiance can be the individual factions with their own books, effectively exchanging the variety of units you could potentially take with a Grand Alliance for special rules, unit synergy, relics more suited to the needs of your army, etc. In your case, because Tomb Kings were effectively dropped I assume you'd be running as Grand Alliance Death - but someone who knows the death armies better might know alternatives.

When building your army in matched play you also need to adhere to certain limits in particular unit types, in a medium sized game you need 1-6 heroes, no more than 4 behemoth, at least 3 battleline, for example. Units have a minimum and maximum size in their point list, and their size is increased in increments. For example, I can pay 100 points for one unit of 10 dryads, 200 points for a unit of 20 dryads etc. Some units are discounted if you take them at maximum size, 30 dryads are 270 points.

Endless Spells are special spells represented with models. Unlike regular spells which your wizards know automatically or get for free when you build your army, the ability to cast endless spells cost points purchased when building your list.

Please bear in mind one thing- unless things suddenly change, and its unlikely, Tomb Kings will never get updated. No new models, no battletome, they don't even exist in the official background of the game. GW has the rules up so people can play with their old armies, but that's all you can expect from them, so as time goes by, the army will be less and less viable. They stripped out all keyowords used by "main" armies from the legacy Tomb King list, so there is zero synergy between modern Death units and TKs too

That being said, all you really need is the rules https://www.games-workshop.com/resources/PDF/AoS_Rulesheets/ENG_AoSSW_Rules_booklet_web.pdf
and the general's handbook for point costs.

The core book does however have rules for Death allegiance abilities (special rules for armies made up of only DEATH keyworded units) and scenarios etc. so itd be worth purchasing.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

As long as they keep the points balanced I think I will be OK.

I suppose that will depend on your threshold for 'balanced'.

Because the points have several nasty balance issues. The new GHB points are only a couple weeks old, so time will tell what that has done to the overall game.
