Here's mine currently:

1) Need to finish painting and basing 6 War Dogs (3 still need silver trim painting and 5 need basing)
2) Need to build and paint my Knight Despoiler

And they will be in that order - I've promised myself I'm not building the Despoiler until the War Dogs are finished!

How much do you have unfinished or unbuilt?

When the hateful Day-Star is a burnt out cinder, my pile of shame will endure. The grey legions are without count, and are only the third wave, reinforcing the old guard of “safe” alloys and a core of lead from dark ages past. For the mortal mind to ponder the piles of the unbuilt and unfinished is to court madness; the scope of such is beyond human ken.

My primed pile of active projects is about 90ish assorted models. I should do a formal inventory. My active to-build list will probably add another 30-40 models to that. This assume I buy nothing more, or dig deep into the pile for projects to do for painting competitions.

I'm in agreement with Budforce, all I have is my 75% completed Chaos Knight on the hobby table, nothing waiting for build or paint. This hobby is crazy expensive and I can't justify buying and then not completing (painted fully) any of this stuff

Next purchase will be two Armiger Knights and some 3D printed bits to make them into Chaos War Dogs and no other purchases until they are done

My backlog has:

1) LOTS of Tyranids. At least two of the old battleforce army sets (so loads of gaunts) and lots of other things. Thankfully I've managed to stop adding to it soo I tend to chip away at it now and then - 3zoanthropes done recently and I've a mawlock and Trygon that I'm aiming to finish up next. Slow and steady with them is my current approach as they aren't my main focus.
Long as I can keep chipping away and not add to it I'm fine.

2) Daughters of Khaine - a few odds and ends but mostly Cauldrons that need building. On hold because my DoK has reached the scary point I need to apply paint to them and the Cauldron kits are easier painted in stages for some parts.

3) Skaven - a bit like the Tyranids at present, not a primary focus and a backlog, though not anywhere near as big.

4) Slaanesh - actually nearly through the backlog of building. One more Exalted Chariot to go and I've built all the plastics.

5) Odds and ends of other armies and stuff. Loads of bits here and there.

So basically my backlog hits a wall of applying paint to models and stalls. However I'm aiming to crack that nut this year and get paint onto models.

Honestly this year my main aim has been to curtail purchases and where they are made aim to complete construction of them. Hopefully by Christmas I own less boxes and more models and maybe even some painted models.

I'm in pretty good shape... for me, anyway.

I'm in the middle of painting up a Lizardman army, and aside from a Skaven Doomwheel and a couple converted DE Cult of Slaneesh riders, that's it.

Honestly... a quarter of the way through the Lizardmen at best. Probably closer to 20%. Maybe even less than that...

I build basically as soon as I have the sprues in hand so I havent had any unbuilt boxes laying around.

When I do paint I generally try to paint in an assembly line but may stop for life stuff and then return to them at a later date.
Currently:
30 MKIV marines 50% done
5 Sternguard 25% done
Predator primed only
Razorback primed only
5 Cataphrachtii Termies 75% done
5 Indomitus Termies 50% done
10 Reivers 50% done
4 Helverins 25% done
Castellan 75%

and that's just the Imperial stuff.

I've barely started on my Flawless Host warband & my Ynarri are awaiting more models.

1 biovore that needs to be repaired from a paint stripping (was a kitbash. needs reassembled and painted).
1 hive tyrant
1 swarmlord in the process of being assembled (waiting for bone swords)
6 tyrant guard
6 hiveguard
3 venomthropes (maybe 6? Gotta check my bits boxes)

I find it shocking that someone would count 7000 points as shameful. If I could get just my Eldar down to 7000, I'd be delighted. And that is before even thinking about marines, GSC, Chaos Renegades, my Afterlife models, my Pantheon of Chaos models, my GW fantasy Chaos models, etc, etc...

You know seeing that makes me think a few things

1) In boxes it looks bigger than it is

2) Darn it sort those boxes out - you've got some leaning on others and there's potential for squished boxes!

Though seriously I find just sorting out and making a neat pile of shame actually makes it mentally easier to tackle; having a jumbled mess not only makes it look more than it is, but also makes it harder to see and get at things. That means when you get inspiration to work on something you can't easily get to it, putting a barrier in the way which can stop you bothering. Also sorting through a pile of shame can be fun, the other day, whilst my pile is nowhere near as big, I had forgotten that I'd got 3 Slaanesh chariot kits from a long while back - I now have another seeker and another exalted chariot that I didn't know I had!

Glad it struck a chord. Feel free to quote if you want to.

So I thought I’d inventory my primed pile while drinking my morning coffee. Once I wake up enough, I’ll try to chip away at it.

Ultramarines: 33
12 RTB01 bolter marines
3 RT assault marines on foot
2 RT veterans
1 RT captain
5 30k destroyers
1 terminator librarian
1 primaris standard bearer
2 blind-box heroes
1 ML/SB tank hatch crewman
2 scouts
1 stalker/hunter/command tank
1 stormhawk
1 TML/HB land speeder

Eldar: 7
2 war walkers
1 jetseer
3 bikes
1 wave serpent

Deathwatch:18
3 agressors
5 reivers
2 inceptors
6 vets (4 w/ heavy guns, 2 SB/chainsword)
2 terminators

Misc.: 8
1 nighthaunt axe guy
3 nighthaunt scythe guys
1 nighthaunt bell guy
1 sister of sigmar novice
2 D&D young wizards

Hm 66. Lower then I thought. Of course, I’ve got 10 things active out on my painting area, and that doesn’t count the spare bits and options kicking around. The guns to swap my LRR to a LRC alone should count as a mini or two. Plus some assorted scatter terrain bits.

The short to-build list, from stuff I own

Ultramarines:
1 primaris librarian
? Finish striping and rebuilding RTB01 marines.

Eldar:
5 dire avengers
5 wraithblades w/axes
1 farseer on foot

Deathwatch:
3 sb/chainsword vets
4 sb/ss vets
1 vet sarge
2 Vanguard vets
1 watchmaster

Nighthault:
24 rest of the soulstorm box

Terrain:
3d printed crates, ruins, pipes, etc.
foam hills

Before the release of Killteam I didnt have a backlog at all since I was only painting 75mm miniatures. But now I am already building 2 Killteams and I am thinking of startig 2 more.

So i currently have

5 Acolyte Hybrids / Hybrid Metamorphs
8 Genestealers

5 Catachan
5 Tempestus Scions
3 Ogryns

The terrain from Killteam starter set

And I dont have it yet but I have preordered the Warcry starter set so in a week or so I will also have

9 Untamed Beasts
6-12 beasts

and the terrain

I hope I can paint the GSC miniatures until then but I really hate cleaning mold lines and covering gaps with green stuff.

This thread sort of made me a bit happier about myself haha. I thought I was just terribly lazy and too compulsive with getting dat plastic crack.

I have 4 different 2000pt armies to paint up now, so a little too long of a backlog to type out. But even in my perfectionist ways I have resorted to Contrast paints to get my Free Cities Empire army painted for the new Battle Tome on its way.

I tend to use 'pile of shame' as the descriptor for the unfinished pile, without actively considering it to be particularly shameful. I reckon in truth it's only shameful if you're not making progress on it. I'm making good progress and spend a lot of time painting, but I've been accumulating new stuff faster than I've been painting, hence the growth in grey plastic and bare, shiny metal.

I respect the folks in this thread who're managing to stick to buying a box and totally finishing it before buying the next. I'm not sure whether that's willpower or simply a different mindset. I like to have plenty of different sprues to hand (scattered around my mancave mainly), so I can start on whatever model I feel like at the time. But I certainly didn't mean to build up as large a backlog as I have - which has mainly come down to spotting the right ebay deals at the right time and taking advantage of box deals and pre-order discounts while I had the chance. It's got to the point where I've got enough grey plastic I feel a bit guilty about buying more, even though there's things I'd like to buy. But then, if I bought them they'd only add to the grey pile anyway and may be waiting for some time to see clippers or paintbrush.
