If this means frequent releases of amazing new Primaris models, I'm absolutely fine with this.
How are people OK with this? Those books are expensive! For EUR32.50, I would hope for at least 5 years of validity with digital updates included.

I'm not, just bought the marine codex last month. But it's clearly the way GW intends to operate going forward.

Or maybe, given the accelerated releases of 8th Ed books we're just resuming the usual cycle of updating armies. The codexes of the past two years have mostly been GW playing catch-up to shift armies from Index to Codex. We'll likely see the next codex in 2-3 months instead of 2-3 weeks so it'll be more likely 4 years or so before the next marines codex.

I think the usual drip-feed of new marine stuff will carry right on. Evidence: the suppressors are not yet getting a proper kit with this release. Further evidence: all the new splatbooks and we know that Iron Hands at least are getting a new model, presumably with the splatbook.

So GW have broken the biggest faction down so that they can spread the releases out a bit over the year as that fits their whole business model.

I got back into marines this year partially because I have learned the lessons of AoS; if you play a fringe faction you can go years without new content to get you excited but if you play Marines/Stormcast there will always be something around the corner to pique your interest.

Realistically I would not expect to see a 6 month period with absolutely nothing new for Marines in it. With the increases in their design and production capacity why would they neglect the core of their business? On the other hand a major overhaul like they are teasing this week will probably only happen every 2 years or so.

My son is exactly that - he has an unreasonable love of Swooping Hawks and Autarchs with Wings. If you could run an army of just those he probably would, maybe with Harlequins sprinkled in for the existential horror of death by interpretive dance. A former guildy of mine from SWTOR absolutely loves the eldar aestetic. thing is, people who love an army for the aestetic are as often as not the guys playing 40k with a handful of buddies in the garage, often playing narrative play etc. Thus they're not visiting tournies etc. Tourny players, DO tend to see a MUCH greater percentage of meta chasers.. you almost HAVE to

Outside of Tournies, he could do a Corsair army, using Wings as Jetpacks. That gets you troops with wings! They're horribly uncompetitive (and you might want to just houserule Corsair squads as CWE troops for him), but they do exist.

For kits, if you want more winged units consider getting Scourge wings. They look amazing. My Exarch, Baharoth, and some of my Corsair Princes use a lot of Scourge bits.

Part of that, on the forums at least, is the toxic sludge that feels the need to attach itself to any pro-CWE post/poster. I can't count how many times I've been told my opinion doesn't matter, or inherently worthless, or whatnot on these forums by the more toxic rabid posters here, specifically because I'm an "Eldar fanboy" or whatnot.

God, I fething hope so. I find it so hilarious that the sisters release they're hyping to hell for a full year is going to have like...1-2 more kit boxes than this marine release they just sharted out with zero warning.

If any other faction got a release this size their fanbase would be partying in the streets, the marine fans took this release like "Meh, it's a rhino chassis, three new character molds, two new specialist infantry kits, a new dreadnought, and a new troop kit. Throw it on the pile, I guess."

Remember like...three years ago, when they released the ENTIRE marine range over again so they could sell every kit with some new grav doodad? Then when the new edition hit they dropped that like a bag of dogshit?

Then two years ago, when they cannibalized all of forgeworld in favor of a whole separate game with dozens of kits that was ONLY space marines vs space marines? Then when the new edition hit they dropped that like a bag of dogshit?

Then a year ago, when they redesigned every marine type from the ground up to rerelease the whole range 5mm taller, and they didn't even give them an edition of being good, they went straight into bag of dogshit mode?

And now we've got "Marines, rereleased and redesigned again but sneaky, oh and here's yet another marine codex with new rule variations you'll build an army around and then have to totally rebuy next year when we make them all disappear/become dogshit."

How do marine players exist still that don't understand this is a cycle? How do people just keep buying this new stuff without realizing in a year the rules you used to build your army will be shoved into a bin of planned obsolescence?

Remember the...what was it, FIVE marine flyer kits and the anti-air tanks? Remember the half dozen rules supplements at the end of seventh? Remember the plastic Heresy range? Remember Deathwatch, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Space Wolves and Grey Knights all getting their own special boxes of dreadnoughts, Terminators, and Tactical Marines?

Just stop buying this stuff, guys.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I am sure a new marine model of some type will come out every other month at least. But do you think we will go two years before gravis and tacticus get the love they (may or may not) deserve? That seems like a long to to have an unbalance range, but even nuGW has it's limits.

It does bug me how lack luster the primaris range has preformed. If they made primaris good from the beginning, there would be hell to pay. At least an uncompetitive primaris range prevents them from replacing normal marines. In fact throwing all the new marines on the gak pile means old marine armies are still good while also giving people new shiny bits to buy. I guess that means when the new gravis and tacticus units come around they won't amount to much either. I don't know if I will ever play primaris marines at this rate.

I am not partying in the streets, but I am very happy with the recent release of Primaris models. Most of what as previewed is getting added to my army. I am not going to get too worked up here has I only know of a handful posters that even like Primaris. Most posters seem to dislike them very much, and I doubt I am going to change their opinion and don't really care to interact with them when they thread crap or are other negative toward Primaris stuff which is going to be any thread on Primaris marines. I would prefer they act like I do with Sisters of Battle and largely ignore what they aren't interested in. But where I live is a free country and they are free to complain gripe and otherwise be misanthropic on a model line that has won me over and become my favorite.

Yeah, kinda; I was fairly new to 40k and played CSM so didn't really care about grav weapons.

I was more upset that Battle for Calth was a pretty good game system that fit on a small table and didn't require rulers or tape measures so it was much easier to get board gamer to play it. I think more people should have the tried the game in the set instead just getting it for 'cheap' models. Might re-learn it one of these days and bring it to a board gaming night as it can pass as one.

Okay it took me a bit to get onboard with a larger amount of Phobos armor units, but I really like the models and don't consider 40k the kinda of game to get all twisted up if my faction isn't great. I'll do my best with the stuff I got, but I don't play or study 40k enough to know if I am losing becuase I am a bad player or I have a bad army. As long as my opponent isn't a complete tool (which they usually aren't) I have fun.

the_scotsman wrote:

I don't have any illusions that 40k will ever be a balanced game and winning it not where I find my fun in it. I am also aware of the cycle but if I don't like it I don't buy it. So long as I have two decently painted forces on a table with nice looking terrain I am happy enough. If the game also happens to be close and fun that is even better. I do plan to have reduced spending on my Primaris army since I am under the impression that Phobos armor units are going to be on the back burner for a while. I am keeping with one of the lost legions as the background for my army so I just need the Space Marine codex which I am mostly picking up because it is re-setting the cycle. If it were next year I probably would just make due to Battlescribe.

I remember I have have the power of the consumer and don't have to buy anything I don't want. Which is pretty easy since I am not chasing the meta. Like I said, I have been really liking the stuff that has been coming out. I think it is a little bit expensive so I don't buy as much of it as I want, but still a little more (it is those big boxed sets that get me) than I can paint.

Zero warning except for the release of shadowspear in march, ohh and the statement back at the launch of 8th that the primaris we saw where always intended to be and the weeks of tease lead up to the Marines. nope no warning at all. none I never would have guessed a new marine release was coming, not with shadowspear introducing an entirely new type of primaris Marine!

actually from what I can tell most people have accepted primaris marines, it's just the detractors are a VERY VERY vocal minority prone to shouting down any who might like them

Is there an emote for a standing ovation?

This is something I realized around 4th edition (playing since 2nd), and my collection since has mostly only consisted of units that wouldn't have been out of place in Rogue Trader. I have to swap out Heavy and Special weapons and change their Transports or deployment strategies as editions/metas change about, but Tacs, Scouts, Assaults, Devs, Vets, Rhino/Razors, Pods, and Dreadnoughts have carried me through 4 editions now.

Agree. The amplification of Grav to a full "weapon of the line" was a little drastic. But at the end of the day it's a Space Marine with a strange futuristic energy weapon, so it doesn't alter the icoography or flavor at all. Grav really was an answer to the inflating MCs of 6th and 7th, and the lack of a Damage characteristic. Lascannons were fine in 3rd when the toughest MCs around were Wraithlords with 3(?) wounds and no invuln. When you have Riptides with a 3++ and 6(?) wounds, you plainly need some other solution. Grav was the antidote.

I have binned 40K to all intents and purposes.

The Chaos Spacemarine release was similar to this SM release. Everyone was awed at our new evil marine chaps (who aren't a great deal shorter than Primaris and are Black Legion whether you like it or not - give or take the odd paint job) and I admit I was at first.

Why you ask, the character, dimensions, sculpts perhaps? No, because CSM received nothing of significance for years other than dinobots nobody wanted in the first place. The more I look at the recently released range the more I recognise it for the contrived gak it is.

History repeats ladies and gentlemen.

Merry Primaras i.e. SM Xmas

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Yeah. There really isn't anything new about the nature of this release. Space Marine releases have always been a cyclical beast, and undoubtedly always will be, which honestly suits me just fine. I love having new plastic options to consider. If they're beautiful, awesome, if they're not, that's no skin off my mickey, but what really chaps my ass are the books! They really aren't worth the money they cost. Paying 4 hours salary (if you're lucky) for what amounts to what is essentially a reprint of an old book with a bit of new artwork and some updated data sheets, should provide more than two years validity. And don't even get me started on the cost of the digital books. In what universe does it cost as much to produce a hardcover paper book than a digital file? Yeah; when it comes to books, I think I'll take your advice and just stop buying stuff.
