Back in 1961, writer Michael Moorcock introduced Elric of Melniboné in the novella The Dreaming City, and he would go on to become the main protagonist in the multi-story epic collectively known as The Elric Saga. Reported by Deadline today, the fantasy-horror series has been acquired by New Republic Pictures’ Brian Oliver and producer Bradley J. Fischer.

The plan? To first turn the saga into a television series, with Glen Mazzara (“The Walking Dead”) and Vaun Wilmott (“Star Trek: Discovery”) on board to adapt the novels.

Deadline describes, “The novels are sensual and atmospheric sword-and-sorcery tales that center on the title character, a brooding albino warrior who presides over an unruly, decadent island nation. The novels follow Elric on a series of adventures, in which he is betrayed by his cousin, sent into exile and attempts to come to terms with his own humanity.”

Oliver and Fischer are now tasked with shopping the small screen project around.

I’d prefer to see Corum, but Elric should at least be watchable.

Since people seem to miss the BLATANT SARCASM inherent in ALL of my postings ...

SARCASM TAGS:

Elric even did the incestuous fantasy thing first (AGoT are but a johnny-cum-lately to that world).

and if ratings showed nothing else, people are fine with that in a fantasy setting. So some ground in that genre has already been broken in that regard.

He's also a white (very) male character, so there's already an audience waiting to lap up every utterance as if it were some kind of gospel.

END SARCASM.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

If memory serves since it’s been 20 years since I read them Elric is an albino right? So giving them stick for some kind of white privilege seems a bit harsh.

Your last point is especially laughable and comical, because not only the 7th ed Valkyrie shown dumber things (like being able to throw the troopers without parachutes out of its hatches, no harm done) - Irbis

Same here!

I really like Elric, but I prefer Corum and Hawkmoon, but we probably can’t get to them without a wildly successful Elric first...

OK wow - I am HUGE Stormbringer and Elric fan

This should be good - it has the Dragons, sex and violence to appeal to those who enjoyed that in GOT - same with the dynastic scheming.

Casting will be intersting.

Really?? He is a Albino non human drug addicted, weakling of a decadent doomed race.... the image is misleading (or maybe represents him boosted by Stormbringer)

No modern TV show would ever get political with a pale skinned, drug addicted weakling of a decadent failed race/empire fighting against the tide of lawless, strange newcomers to the land his people used to exploit for their pleasures.

Not pale skinned - ALBINO.

Elric is a Demon summoning prince whose people sacrifice people for kicks and power - he kills more of his loved ones than his enemies - or rather his sentient sword does. He was created as the anti Conan.

There are no "strange newcomers" - not sure where you are getting that. There are humans who have picked up and ran with the worship of Chaos.

Changing alot of stuff here to fit your narrative.

Not my narrative. I just saw the Terminator movie made political by people on both sides of the culture war with even less to work with. And considering how outspoken Moorecock was politically, I’d be surprised if there wasn’t any politically motivated drama.

Edit: Note that I don't want the show to be political or to be altered to avoid or embrace any "toxic" fandoms. If just think that might be too big a wish in a Post Ghostbusters 2016 world.

Wow, I think this could be awesome in the right hands.

Could also be hot, hot garbage. I really like Elric, but I think even Moorcock himself didn't capitalize as well on Elric's story as he could have.

Elric was one of the first anti-heros and the whole Elric saga was a great way to contrast the fantastic moral clarity of Tolkien, for example. However, I'm not too sure how much stomach any studio would have for a serious exposition of that.

it could be wonderfully daft or something awful on the scale of that Earthsea adaption, either way I'm up for it (plus it'll come with the bonus spot the idea Warhammer 'borrowed' game)

And the related forum drinking game: every time someone complains about Elric the Show 'stealing' ideas from Warhammer.
