Yup.
I’m a fan of Primaris Marines. I really like their Lore, though I get why other don’t.
I’ve just finished up constructing the Vanguard Start Collecting, and a box of Eliminators (seriously nice kits).
And it’s because they’re something new. I’ve always quite liked Space Marines, but overtime found them a little stale. Now? It’s like a brand new force to me (and yes, I get that’s why others aren’t keen).

Went from Marines to Eldar (CWE), despite Eldar being terribad, because I loved their fluff. And chose Uthwe over Biel-Tan, despite, liking the looks of Biel-Tan more, because I liked Uthwe's fluff more.

Lore made me consider other factions than NUrgle, too. But they never made me switch because it's too much of an investment and Nurgle has a range that is broad enough to support nearly any playstyle so I usually thought: Yeah, that's a nice army too, but I can do that already with X.
Sometimes lore makes me interested in a faction but then I realize GW doesn't provide the proper models or took them out of production - I'd be interested in Snakebite/ Savage Orks but GW hardly supports them and even killed of Greenskinz in AoS which could have been the base models for them.

It’s made me start another army. Looking at you stunty little turds with bat ears (Night Lords) I spent a fortune on not long before the new CSM models came out. Now I can’t even bring myself to paint them. They’re sat in a box undercoated with their little stunty legs, even the release of Night Lords Blue paint hasn’t spurred me on.

I guess I never meant abandon the first army, but switch of focus.
But It does seam like a lot of us are heavily influenced by the lore.
I am curious did you abandon the Necrons strictly because of the fluff or are they back in stasis due to fluff and current rules?

I don't start a faction if I don't like the model appearance and the lore to some degree, but lore is basically the last thing that determines my "focus" out of my 5 factions.
In general, the focus of my factions is driven by:
The size and available of models already in my collection. I rarely buy new Guard stuff compared to other armies, because I already have a lot of guard models and any new model would be a duplicate of something I already own. I buy a lot of Grey Knight stuff, because they're my newest faction and I don't have all the options and nice models there are to have yet.
What I'm running competitively. Sisters are my main competitive army, and Guard are my second [though I'm unhappy with all the lists I've drafted with the new sisters codex, so that might change], so I buy things for them to make sure that lists I want to run competitively can be run. I bought some mortars recently, and another rhino for my Sisters. I need to buy more basilisks too.
New models and models that are really cool. My enthusiasm for my space wolves went up dramatically with the release of the tacti-cool marines and the Executioner [though the expensive tank is on my wishlist for next summer since Sisters of Battle were a more immediate priority], and I bought a ton of Sisters stuff to get both the things I want before they go OOP and the new stuff that's coming out.
That said, right now I have a bunch of Sisters stuff to paint, and that needs to happen before I buy new things.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

Yes. The CWE lore of remnants world ships drifting through the void of space is the sole reason for getting back into 40k.
Not into Ynnari - because of their take on suicidal tendencies "coz reasons and stuff" for a dying super advanced super developed alien race scared of dying.
Tyranids intialy got me into the hobby as their lore of ultra fast mutating all devouring alien swarm is epic. (the interaction with GSC is very meh personaly and feels like a bad re-run of falling skies.. Cant believe I watched that show!)
If necrons went to oldcrons lore wise I thinkt hey would be a strong contender for my second army of unfeeling, impersonal, emotionaly blank T100's <3

Re: Crons - I hit a rough patch in life and sold off a bunch of stuff. My Cron army included. I'm always thinking about rebuilding that army but the lore shift and balance shift (the degradation of key units, namely Warriors, Immortals and Flayed Ones) really bugs me.
Which is related to the Tyranid - Primaris think as well. I want powerful villains in 40k, Necron Warriors used to be better than Tac Marines, but they went down and Primaris inflated the loyalist stats. Tyranid Warriors seem to be the only Xenos core unit who is outright superior to an Intercessor, so I built an army based around Tyranid Warriors.

Necrons are IMHO a bit of a problem, they're supposed to be a numberless swarm... but they're also supposed to be hyper powerful, this isn't exactly easy to present in a war game as if you make them really powerful, people can't take a big army (imagine if a necron army was custodes sized?) but if you make them cheap eneugh that they work as a largish army they're not going to be as good as they're fluffed to be,

Yes; I thought if I ever start a marine faction it would be grey knights, the model range aesthetics are my cup of tea outside of the ‘baby carrier’, then I delve into their lore and they are major a-holes, not to mention crazy stuff written by the 5th chaos god; so I went with deathwatch just before they got their own codex.

Switch factions? No. But the aesthetics/lore are the only reason I choose an army, nothing else matters.

Not really, the IG is and will always be me bois, also I gradually started loving a few other factions, mostly necrons of which I now have a small army.
Tyranids are exception: I love them.but don't feel really thrilled playing them, although I love playing scenarios or against them or reading stories in which they are involved.

You mean like Tyranids?
The 3rd ed Cron book did it really well I thought. For the baseline, 10 Warriors was roughly the cost of a Tac squad with weapons, except the cost of the special weapons was spread evenly across the Necron Warriors by giving them the Gauss ability. Warriors were therefore individually slightly better than Tac troopers in terms of their weapon. They lacked ATSKNF, but could reanimate (on 4s I think). So the basic Cron at 18 was markedly better than the Tacs at 15. The effect of the Resurrection in-game effectively felt like they were larger in number, as your own numbers would dwindle and the Necrons could start steamrolling you with bodies that just wouldn't die. To balance out the potential power of the resurrections, there was another rule that meant Necrons would just Phase Out once the army got below 25% "Necron" units. Which lore-wise was cool because it meant that all the casualties you had just done to them at the cost of your own models was for nothing, as they would just repair and come back again.
Additionally, because of the way the Resurrection and Phase Out worked, it promoted armies that were large and filled with bodies. This meant that a solid Necron army would tend to have big blobs of Warriors, while a Marine army might spend points on Dreadnoughts and Tanks. So even though the base troopers were similar in cost, the Necron army design actively promoted larger body counts. The way the army wanted to manifest was naturally higher body counts than average marine armies, where each body was better than a basic marine.
