Seeing as we have the opposite question in another thread let's go with the flip side of the coin.
Not one to dodge controversy here is my choice:
Knights - whether Imperial or otherwise. I really don't see what the appeal is model wise.
|
Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you. |

Hard to say since i wouldn't like to talk in stead of the others.
But I'd say the Death Guard sculpts, too goofy for my taste.
Note that I like the knights, the imperial ones, although I have no further arguments than: they look cool to me!

I'm not a fan of the Custodes existing outside the fluff as a playable faction. That colors my perception of the models enough that i really, really don't like them.

No problem re: knights.
Not the intention of the thread to bash others' preferences.
I see a lot of people speaking highly of the knight models but they do nothing for me e.g. the Porphyrion looks like a CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT with legs.
Oddly I quite like the AT scale knights.

Imperial knight design does seem goofy to me. That is because when compared to the elegant Japanese Anime Gundam that is a giant robot that weights many tons is able to fly faster and more agile than a fighter jet. Complete weeabo fighting magic. Gundams fighting like Dragon Ball Z.
Imperial Knights compared to Battletech Mechwariors, the mechwarriors appear more realistic in design and concept. Melee punch is secondary while ranged weaponry is primary form of attack. Mechwarriors are walking tanks that lumber into position and fire all weapons. Imperial Knight walk briskly and try to swing a giant chainsword. Is it a good idea to use a chainsaw to cut through metal? Not really, because the best saw design is a rotor saw, the kind used to cut car doors open, and even then if you tried to attack with a saw, the tooth gets bent as you swing and glance off the side of the sheet of metal.

Tor Garadon is seemingly favoured among many, yet I find him one of the ugliest characters yet out of the new space marine characters. I literally audibly wheezed and laughed when I saw his face and his oversized schnozz.
Fuel added to the fire when none of these characters came with a helmeted option, something that I praise the Calgar model heavily for.

The entire necron codex.
Literally ALL their models are dumb looking. They're space tomb princes, yet they gave the actual Egyptian motif to 1k sons instead. So necrons have no theme other than being generic skeletons with non-sense non-functional vehicles.

Pretty much The whole slanesh daemon line, just don’t like the models.
Also Phobos armor for primaris, not a fan.
Pretty much all the human tanks, their design is silly with tons of flat sides that are perfect for getting blown up. It’s part of the reason my current space marine force does not use any tanks.
Dark eldar and harlequins just don’t like the models.
Eldar tanks
SM flyers(but it seems this might be a common dislike)
GSC except for the ridge runners.
Aggressors, they just look silly.
Reivers, hate unhelmeted SM models, if they had helmets it would be better.
Kroot, just don’t like the way they look.
Tau flyers(the GW ones in the codex) they are so ugly, I am glad they are terrible so I don’t have to see them.

At this point, while hate is a strong word, I'd say I dislike (to a level where I would not buy them nor play the army) maybe 50% of GW's releases from the past few years. The move toward larger miniatures with more (often copious/pointless) details and doo-dads, and ever increasing "dynamic" poses is generally a turn off. I feel like many of the sculptors get carried away with the bits catalogue they must have access to, and many of the miniatures suffer for it.

I totally agree with Imperial Knights. To the point where I was at the point of splitting the Renegade Box several times with a friend but didn't do it because I just find those things terribly ugly. The Chaos Knight on the other hand is a vast improvement (as with everything Chaos it's just... better).
I also consider most Primaris Marines to be... not better than the old ones', just different. Yes, their proportions are better, but their poses often look goofy (especially Reivers) and the monoposes and too little bling don't help them. The phobos marines overall are cool, though, at least they have a lot of stuff on them which I expect from a 40K mini .
Aside from that maybe Tyranids? I consider them to be the ugliest faction in 40K despite being a fan of Alien and the Zerg. Probably because I'm a fan of Alien and Zerg, Tyranids simply look like bad caricatures of these, as if someone took the concept drawings of Giger and tried to dial them up to 11 - in effect making them look stupid.

While I don't "hate" them, I am completely nonplussed by the clamour for "Diaznettes". The current sculpts are far superior, IMO.

A lot of people's choices in here don't seem all that controversial or different to general opinion…
Lemme show you how it's done:
Abaddon. I hate that model. Takes itself WAY WAY WAY too seriously for a ridiculous over-the-top heavy metal space barbarian warlord.

Although I agree about Giger's Alien looking amazing, I disagree with the Tyranids. To me they are unique because they are the sci-fi "bug" race but they arent actually bugs. Just like with most daemons, the models dont do them justice. Looking at some of the old Tyranids artwork (like the 5th ed codex art) and some more recent ones like the current codex art, its clear to me that the models, or atleast Eavy Metal's pain scheme dont properly reflect the terrifying biomechanical look of the tyranids

Hmmm.
I dislike the new super chubby terminator dudes, not sure what they are called. But I think they are generally considered to be quite poor so not sure it fits.
I would say I am not a fan of any of the Primarch models that have been released either from Forgeworld or from GW because I think it is absolutely ludicrous to make them giants, aside from the Daemon Primarchs. And the Daemon Primarchs they have released do not live up to what I imagined, reading about them years ago. When I read about the Primarchs when I got into the hobby I always assumed they were pretty much normal sized space marines, and there was never any information to the contrary. How does Guilliman interact with everyday life in the Imperium if he is so huge?

In fairness to them they used to be much less space tomb kings so it at least makes sense they have the mismatch.
For me it's the old Celestine. I've seen so many people say she was amazing and a classic but I just couldn't see why you'd like her.

Considering that all the buildings and places Guilliman is likely to be in are typically massive in scale (like how so many things in 40k are), I think he'll be fine with getting around most rooms.
As for things like writing instruments, they actually make a joke about that in a short story featuring Guilliman post-resurrection, where he gets annoyed by his inability to pick up a sheet of blueprints.

You gotta admit, it's a pretty hilarious image. Constantly getting cobwebs and bugs in his hair whenever he walks around old Terran palaces and stuff…
And he can't even take off the armour without dying!

I think the only reference to their size being out of the ordinary, was when Sanguinius brought a Bloodthirster down over his knee and broke its back during the siege of terror. I remember thinking... hu? thats a bit weird. But also I was a teen so right after that my brain went AAAAWESOME.
But beside that I'm totally with you. If they really had to go down the "bigger is better" route, a few centimeters would have been more than enough. Just think of how much difference 4 inches makes in the perception of a person.
But well, i guess that is neither here, nor there.

Ok, feel a need to correct you here, it's battletech Battlemechs, a Mechwarrior is the driver not the combat unit. and Battletech's been around so long that it's design of units vary pretty wildly.
moving onto that, I'm gonna name something that might be one of the most contriversial... the Lemen Russ.
It just looks a tad clumsy, like it's suffering from an identity crisis and was designed by someone to look "old fashioned and cool" without a thought as to how it'd function. the size of the barrel is rediculas factored against the size of the tank. the amount of ammo it'd be able to store would be tiny. TBH I'd not be opposed to a re-imagine of the entire Guard tank line. taking the basic basic elements of it but making it's scale etc work better
