Hey Dakka, been searching for a small minis case to hold around 12-14 models. What do you all suggest for a case around this size that has foam on the inside?

GW blackstone fortress case; though for around $50 you minds well get the next level up, their citadel battle case for around $60, which holds a lot more.

For stuff that small I tend to just cut up a sheet of foam and chuck it into a cigar box, Tupperware, hinged tin or similar.
Its possible to buy single sheets of foam with whatever sized openings you like or split up a larger cardboard case.

If I can recommend Feldherr. they have small boxes or bags that can hold up to 20 models in a single tray.

I actually really like the small GW cases, I just don't like the zig zag foam for metal models. If somebody made a replacement foam tray I would honestly look into them.

Ah! Great, those small KR cases are near exactly what I am looking for. However, I do find the KR website to be a hassle to navigate unless you are well versed into their particular nomenclature for trays and cases.

The small 21 mini and card deck trays would be perfect for games like Rogue Stars once I print off cards instead of sheets for my models.

Feldherr sells on Amazon in the US, IIRC with prime shipping. I do like my 64 model cap one for holding my killteam stuff, but IIRC, I don't think they go below a two sheet/32 model case.

My go to with anything these days is metal sheet+magnets. Just find appropriate sized plastic container, metal sheet to bottom, magnets to bases, hey presto

Ah, that wouldn't really work for me, need something padded I can throw into my backpack while riding my motorcycle/bicycle.

Awesome! I will make sure to send them an email when I am ready to purchase, and, thank you for being so willing to help. Going to try one other solution before committing though.

I like battle foam trays inserted into aluminum briefcases/tool cases of different sizes. A bit expensive but so durable and customizable

find you a harbor freight. They got pluck foam camera/gun cases. The smallest one would suit you at 14.00. I got the next size up for 25 and it currently has 5 flashgitz, 3 meganobz, and around 20 boyz. And I could still add more.

As long as you don't mind the 'Warcry' branding on the outside, GW sells a small case that they say can carry up to 20 miniatures for $35.

For all the opprobrium that GW cases receive and have received in the past, I find their latest range to be surprisingly good - the ones with the zig zag foam. They fit awkward models very well and you can fit quite an unexpected amount in them.

And I completely hate the new zig zag foam. While it can be good for weird shapes, good old pluck out does the job even better.
Zig Zag is also terrible for smaller models as they just slip under.
I would rather buy something from Feldherr.

Do both.
Feldherr for small troop-types, and a GW for bigger fiddly ones.
One-size-fits-all is not a common thing in this hobby.

Chessex makes nice, sturdy cases. I have three that I've been using for close to 40 years.

Another issue I have with the zig zag foam is that in order to preserve the flexibility of the dividers, they're not fixed to the base. Consequently, if you place anything even remotely heavy in it (like metal models) the whole tray tries to implode because there's no structural rigidity.

I daresay one could reinforce it with some card glued to the base, or by not having the temerity to use anything other than plastic minis, but it rendered the skirmish case near useless to me once it began to fit a bit full with some metal figures and I had to rethink how I transported them.

You know, I saw those at Harbor Freight the other day while I was there for something else, and should have stopped to take a closer look at them.

Hah, I totally forgot about those Chessex cases. Looked at them last night and they looked like a great option as well. The 14 mini small cases seem great for the 10 model crews I bought for Rogue Stars. I was going to ask how well the hinged hold up, but if you have been using the same three cases for close to 40 years, probably don't have too much to worry about.

Yeah, and that is my issue, the models I bought for Rogue Stars are metal, so the zig zag foam is going to be absolutely worthless with the case in a backpack.

I'd be careful with the Chessex cases, I have two of the larger cases with two levels that hold my metal DnD figs (old school Ral Parthas). They're great for the old 25mm models, but I don't think my new GW models would fit in either dimension (either base or protruding arms and such). My oldhammer Brets (metals) fit because they're fairly flat but their weapons stick out of the slots.

I'm going to check out the Harbor Freight boxes today, as I need something to store my AT titans.

I also use the cardboard cases from KR multicase, and they're great. Sturdy enough to store alone, then stick 'em in a carry case and off you go. I think they'd be fine in a backpack.

I have some Ultra-Pro cases that are great for skirmish games. 2 layers, 16 foam spaces on the top layer and 9 larger foam spaces on the bottom.

If I don't need all the spaces for minis, they can hold dice or cards instead.

You can also buy just the foam for $10.

KR cannot be beaten for flexibility, you can rip the foam out and restick it if needed.
