We'll find out soon enough eh.

I love that "we take your safety so seriously, we've been selling you this thing for nine years without realising it doesn't meet Canadian safety standards"

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks
-----
"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

Like a lot of things, the government safety standards as written in law is likely something really simple and open to interpretation. It then gets passed down to be interpreted into best practice codes by various interested departments and bodies, which is often where things get complicated. It might be that the cap was interpreted as OK for all those years or was never challenged, but that recent changes (which might even just be the appointment of a new person or team in charge of the best practice codes) have caused revision. The result is that the cap no longer or "might" no longer meet the same standards and interpretation of the rule. Hence the recall.

Or it's taken Canadian safety standards nine years to realise?

Has that version of the bottle ever been sold in the UK? It doesn't seem familiar.

I susoect it's a bit of both. the standards likely say "it must meet this standard" GW produced their bottles in good faith beliving it met the standards and eventually it came up that the ministry didn't consider it good eneugh.

The standard might also have shifted, even if in a very subtle way, which might invalidate the old design and due to its nature, prompt a full recall rather than just changing the design going forward. GW might even be acting in good faith and doing a full recall rather than a life expectancy recall of the product in order to avoid any potential legal backlash down the road. Meanwhile a retail outlet selling food with packaging that gets a recall might only have to recall within a few months of sale because after that the content (food) would have perished beyond consumption anyway.

Or along the way, someone has managed to choke on a part in a way that no-one ever considered possible before!

That's why we now have holes in the top of Bic biros and hinged lids on Kinder Egg capsules.

That's fascinating. Do you have any other examples? I imagine that this is not the first time this caused a headache for a model company. Hopefully this doesn't inconvenient our Canada brethren.

I know GW stores have had to take some paints off the shelves before because it was mislabelled (wrong safety data IIRC) but I don't think that was an actual recall.

You should see the amount of insane stuff you have to do to meet "CE" requirements.

I swear the way the standards are written it is specifically designed to prevent North American sales in the E.U. especially since you need a representative located there to comply to requirements.

So yeah, it is incredibly easy to be contrary to regulations or even things that "should" be ok.

Found out we had a new health hazard at work: crates from Thailand are made of treated wood to prevent invasive species living in them (which is a good thing).
BUT they are allowed to rather than heat treat them and fry the pests out they can use chemical treatment to kill them.
Problem is, it makes the sawdust of cutting these things to break them down hazardous dust (hazardust! ) if you breath it in.

There are "small" stupid things we find all the time that are gotcha's we need to be aware of.

Safety symbol graphics, language laws of the land, I am a Quality Engineer for a multi-national company and I have to research this kind of stuff all the time, not just once, but these things change from year to year with little or no notice.

So no, no I am not surprised this kind of thing happened, I am sorry they have to deal with this problem.

A revolution is an idea which has found its bayonets.

I can't remember if it was an actual recall of a released product or a delayed release as some parts on the original sprue needed to be altered at short notice.

They're just some of the things that you notice as you get older.

Biro lids have the hole so that a swallowed lid will still allow air to pass. I assume Kinder capsules are hinged to avoid the swallowing of half or maybe there was an eye injury because I can remember us popping the capsules at each other at play times.

I've a distinct memory that one way to open the kinder eggs was to pop it in your mouth half way and lightly bite so that you squashed the inserted half so that it popped out of the cap half.

Yup. Due to pointy bits, the packaging needed a different child safety warning thing. I’ve dim memories of my store being sent sticky labels to put over the shelf stock?

YES because you've got a tongue that gets in the way whilst you do it. You're not trying to swallow it

Tongues were evolved to help you not swallow things like nails, staples and half a kinder egg

Thats how nearly every child (Myself included) opened them... and thats probably why they changed it.

That kinda makes sense. I recently managed to acquire some cheap Carnifex bits and while assembling the torso with elastics managed to nigh-eviscerate my index finger on their ventral blades. Those are sharp!
