I like(d) the sculpted banners. Paper ones no.

Meanwhile I'm envisioning colorful neck frills & wildly colored individuals within broods (imagine a Baboons rear end - but as a whole gaunt).

I think banners on characters are cool and thematic and really bring home the "medieval fantasy but in SPACE" theme of 40k. If I can get my freehand skills up to par I hope to eventually paint some elaborate banners on stuff.
The people I play with use main bodies for LOS, not banners and poky bits. I like the way kill team arena requires you to draw line of sight to the base.
I often play in tournaments, which by definition means a lot of WAAC stuff happens. In casual play it's usually not an issue though, as you say.

I used to build those until I discovered how they would always break during transport, so instead I put those banners on bases and now I got cool markers/objective tokens!!
Different color for each banner, though I think if I could paint some nice gothic style 1, 2, 3... to identify the banners it would be even better!

I really like to put banners on my marines. I'm working on a little Kill Team where everyone will be getting a back banner of some sort. After all, it's all about looking flashy and cool.
