With social distancing and self isolation, how are fellow players coping with not being able to play games with other players?

I know there are other elements to the hobby which we can still do, like painting and modelling and terrain-building... But no games

Sounds good. Are people actually managing to play 40K over Skype?

Certainly, being able to play at home with household members would be great.

Seeing as I've not played a game of anything since September it's business as usual for me...

I’m painting all those minis I bought earlier.

If I want to play a game, there’s Vassal, Tabletop Simulator (exceptionally awesome with VR) and older games like Dawn of War.

Or,I just go over to my brother’s house, or play with my son who’s home from college for the moment.

It never ends well

I'm playing games against myself.
It's nice to get to play out cool scenarios.
I don't have room for a table, so my Necrons defend the couch or ottoman, I run boards between chairs, like massive bridges over impossible caverns.

For now I'm coping, but I know I'll get blue balls very soon. I don't have the table space at home to play against myself, and it just wouldn't be much fun anyway.

I just got the latest Seraphon army book and I'm frustrated that I'll have to wait before trying out their nifty new rules. At least I'll have plenty of time to grow and paint my Sisters of Battle before I field them; I hate playing with unpainted models.

Painting and list planning for this year's ITC.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Being lonely, reading forums, painting miniatures, and considering theoretical list ideas for whenever the lockdown ends.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Actually I'm lucky enough that my brother plays to, so after being sent back to my native town for self isolation, I could fianlly play after llong months not having the time to!

However their isn't that much time for playing itself really, as there are plenty of things to do home that are more or less time consuming.

40k: Necrons/Imperial Guard/ Space marines
Bolt Action: Germany/ USA
Project Z.

The Wife is able to play W40K (Orks), but we have just been watching a lot of movies.

The wind has left my sails as far as W40K is concerned anyway.

I play perhaps six times per annum a tabletop game. Even if this low number dwindles to zero it wouldn't be a big deal for me. There are a lot of things you can do with your time besides pushing minis around.

I see what you did there.

Mostly I've just been painting, although I've been a bit more active on the mobile games.

I am working remotely, so I am occupied during most of the day, and there are plenty of things to do around my place. Outside of that I am managing to do more painting, assembling, and terrain building.

Getting a bit more painting and list brewing time in now, though my academic work was mostly remote to begin with. Number of rpg sessions refereed per week has increased, though, thanks to eager players dwiddling their thumbs at home without having to wait a week for the next club evening.

I'm not...

I just had a GT cancelled today that wasn't until May, Making the third event so far. Already paid for, hotel already paid. I'm not doing well. This game is my outlet for life stress.

Painting seems moot to me most days now. As, my main driving force was events.

Life as usual. Had a tough call at Christmas whether to get more Sisters swag (which would be collecting dust now) or an Xbox. I went the latter and currently very glad I did.

Unfortunately my only gaming buddy is a high risk of death if he gets the virus and seeing as I do deliveries to isolated people's every day, I need to keep my distance from him to make sure he stays alive and I got a gaming buddy in future.

I'm working on the pile of shame.

got my sisters nearly done, then I'll finish off a dark apostle I forgot about, then I'll return to the space wolves project I began last year and set aside in the excitement of the space marines, CSM and sisters codex releases.

once I get those done I'm gonna do up Ghaz, and the rest of that set for Orks combined with my old ABR Orks. I figure come fall at my current rate I'll have my space wolves in a ready state and a decent small Ork army.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Well it has only been one weekend so far. Painting a Death Guard army that was only supposed be a primer only job for someone. am kinda stuck with the models so agreed to paint them up now.

I am one of the lucky ones that still has work. If anything more work as I suspect everyone is trying to get as much done before another round of work restrictions might happen.

The Thur/Fri/Sat gaming options down at the local shop have been eliminated for the time being.

Wich has simply added 3 more evenings to work assorted gaming projects.
Current plan is:
* Monday evening: AoS project (working on FW Squigs atm)
* Tue evening: Write stuff up/prep for next weeks D&D session(s)
* Wed evening: TV/movie night - tend to catch uup on about a weeks worth of shows via streaming.
* Thur. evening: Flames of War (WWI, WWII, Nam/Arab-Isreli/or Team Yankee - I play them all & have plenty to paint....)
* Fri. evening: It'll alternate between 40k projects (Orks!) & a Bolt Action project. With a greater emphasis on Bolt Action for a bit.
* Sat. evening: I'm about to begin working on a dedicated minis game table. Ether a 6x4 or 8x4 with a green/tan reversible surface. Have to do some measuring/rearranging & see what'll fit the room best.

Its an ache that grows and fades like waves over time. Interest in the other aspects of the hobby like painting wanes as it feels pointless without the game to justify the effort. Eventually you just stop caring and somewhat move on to other endeavors but the longing still lingers.....

Too bad they didn't release Blood Bowl 3 in time for this social isolation period. Could still play BB2 which is a close mirror to the actual tabletop game. But BB3 was announced for this year and no news yet. I'm finding myself spending more time painting my minis and playing video games. I'm not particularly thirsty for tabletop gaming at the moment, not until all this has blown over. My lgs was like a very large bedroom but with no windows and ventilation, no way in hell would I be in there even if they were open for business.

Well it feels odd that there is no game night for the week, but it has allowed me to paint alot of minis i have been procrastinating on. my axis laser themed force for DUST is fully done now and i have started on my allies force. i have been spending the other time doing yard/housework or playing games online.

I live in Vietnam and no one plays 40k here. I played 40k tabletop for 3 years when I was in the UK. Good time. Will definitely miss that.

2 alternatives I can suggest:

+ Watch battle reports online. There is a ton of them released each day.

+ Play Dawn of War Retribution. There are still people playing it.

paint the recently reduced pile of shame into a shamefully painted pile of shame (atleast for me that is the niveau )

Do something else.

Considering how I'm stuck doing my job from home office and watching after the kid at the same time, free time has become a valuable good anyways.
Some times I basecoat some boyz to paint for my daughter so we can both spend the afternoon painting, but in general there is less time for painting than before.

I did have my first game using TTS though, and at while it's no replacement for playing in the real, it's definitely a replacement for not playing.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.
