Bought a bigger bottle of Tennessee Honey. First went down smoother than an Otter of the bank, and it was on offer too.

Defo cheaper than the beer too. 70cl bottle should last me a few weeks for £16 ( not including mixers)

Back on the good stuff.

Nomad Brewing Co, Bleak Season. 6%, veering solidly into Porter territory.

Definite Marmite kick, a taste I embrace.

Nearly six months later....we’re back in lockdown.

And for “proper beers”*, that means it’s Porter Season, what with it being Autumn/Winter.

Whatcha drinking, Dakka?

You folks have inspired me to snag a six of my favorite hefeweise tonight while its still easy to shop around here. Surging cases .. sigh .. mean a lockdown is likely and when they are in place, I can't go outside anyway lest I get it and destroy the business I work in by shutting it all the way down.
Result is, drink while you got em, cause we will be all sipping on straight chlorine in our houses (that's a reference to the water supply being chlorinated, not something wierd) whilest we wait for a chance to go to a bar (that's american for either an ursine nightmare animal like https://nypost.com/video/grizzly-bear-takes-shotgun-blast-at-point-blank-range-and-keeps-charging/ or for a pub in yankee.

Yes, that was 50 percent just an excuse to post this awesome overwatch in real life between, apparently, a gaurdsman with a rapid fire weapon (he could shoot it twice) and a bear with a lousy charge roll.

Guard gaurd gAAAARDity Gaurd gaurd.

I wish the local breweries would ease up on the IPA and make more stouts. I know they can do good ones, but it’s not trendy, so hard to find on the shelves.

Last pack I picked up was Oatbituary, from Northway Brewing Co. Oatmeal coffee stout, quite good.

Amen on the Stout wish.

I’ve nothing against IPA like. I just find hop heavy beers to taste a bit soapy.

Gimme my malty beers.

But not malt Whisky, as I don’t like it. Go figure!

Ah, glad I saw this topic. Reminded me to check in on my favorite local brewery to see what's available.

They do 24oz cans which are perfect and last forever. I've still got a can of their key lime pie wheat beer which turned out pretty nice.

Let's see:

"Beer That Built the House" - Robust porter, "Maris Otter and caramel malts, as well as flaked rye, chocolate rye — and decadent Laura’s Fudge — make up a delightfully complex bill of fermentables."

"Swashbuckling Interstellar Quests" - Imperial stout, "complexity and variety in its malt bill, and the inclusion of some milk sugar, create layered depths of both dark and milk chocolate flavors throughout this baddie’s sumptuous drinking experience."

"La Vie En Rose," Golden ale, "notes of doughy sweet bread and hushed tones of melon on the nose, followed by a crispy and bright drinking experience."

Other three are pale ales or IPAs, so I'll pass.

Ah ah ah!

No merely reading the brewery’s tasting notes!

I mean, I could* get all wordy and poetic on the scent of a big fat poo.]

*not gonna. My big words are reserved when I’m at work, and being paid a worryingly large** amount given my total lack of qualifications!

My local brewery has come up with a brilliant idea; a night-in party box. Beers, snacks and glasses all bundled together:

Rum rumrumrurmrum RRRUUUUUMMM.

This is a revelatory drink for me having been a vodka man my drinking life.

It could be my age but Spiced Rums are a nice relaxer on a lockdown evening while binging on box sets.

Curently making my way down a bottle of 'Duppy Share' a mixed Rum but fairly easy drinking.

I have found its also worth going for a 'poncy' mixing cola...I've changed....

I keep a bottle of Kraken on the shelf. It’s an easy to get, solid spiced rum. Not top shelf, but good for rum and cokes, dark and stomies, or splashing into mulled cider. Could be taken straight sipping, but good for mixers as well.

(If I was just going sip it, I might spring for something a little more quality, but if I’m in that kind of mood, I’m drinking bourbon)

No ales for me lately but plenty of mead.... love the stuff. A drink sent from the old gods themselves. Going down nicely while I’m playing Valhalla.

I’ve had a few, can’t say that I cared for them overmuch. Not bad, but like a cross between a light beer and a sweet wine. As I prefer dark beers and dry wines, not my thing. But I can see why people enjoy them.

And just the fact that you are drinking mead stirs images of battleaxes and feasting halls, which is not a bad thing.

Ha yeah.... mind you with the winter solstice/ Yule in a few weeks I’m sure il be drinking loads more mead.

Yeah it’s not to everyone’s taste but it goes down pretty well with me.

When it comes to Mead, I love a bottle of Moniack.

Oh. And Vikings Blood. It’s a wee bit pricey, but worth it for an occasional treat.

Just ordered half a dozen of each of these:

https://www.vibrantforest.co.uk/beer/cambrian-root
https://www.vibrantforest.co.uk/beer/viridis

I've had the Cambrian Root before and it's spectacular. The Viridis is a rather pricey punt but it sounds lovely...

"Salted liquorice stout" sounds interesting. Like an adult root beer.

Now I want an alcoholic birch beer... A local brewery serves a "Not Your Daddy's Sarsaparilla," which is a mix of their homemade sarsaparilla soda and one of their wheat beers.

Tried a can of the Viridis last night. Really really sour - it's like the Toxic Waste super-sour sweets. If it was slightly toned down it would be perfect, flavour is otherwise really nice. Not sure I'd rush to buy more though, just too damn expensive.

My beer tastes are rather standard, so here's my mediocre contribution:

Hiver Beer, honey-based lager and ale produced small-scale in the UK. Went on a beekeeping tour of the hives a few months back as well as a tasting session, immediately bought a crate. It's available in some M&S and Waitroses, would definitely recommend.

Fourpure Brewing; based in Bermondey, London. Wide selection of lagers, ales, sour beers and stouts. While I'm not a fan of "poncy beer" as I put it such as silly-flavoured ales and sours, their lager is definitely worth trying, albeit a little bit pricier than your standard pint.

These and a lot of others can be found in the Bermondsey Beer Mile, 16 independent breweries/taprooms within walking distance. Have completed it a couple times in the past, worth giving a go although it takes the best part of a day to try it all.

Toying with getting some Beers in for the weekend. None particularly in mind, and to be honest having been off the sauce all week, I’m kinda enjoying it.

Currently enjoying a bottle of Hiver. Thank you for the recommendation!

Not sure it’s a session beer, but it’s very distinctive, and may be good in a stew?

Glad you enjoyed it. Haven't considered using it in a stew, my gut feeling is the honey flavour would be too subtle. Have tried cooking with wine recently using a spag bol recipe from James May's new book. I was always under the impression you use just use a drizzle, whereas this recipe called for around 300mls' worth. Overall was the best thing I've ever cooked, so I'm now looking at other beers/wines which would be good to cook with.
