That’s pretty damning. What were they thinking releasing such an underdeveloped app, they’ve massively dropped the ball here. This was their opportunity to hoover up subscriptions and make the app the go to army builder. The interest and attention the launch of 9th has garnered etc has been utterly wasted. Anyone who does subscribe will be disappointed, and likely angry, and the ones who don’t subscribe probably never will now. Massive wasted opportunity.
I guess I was right about them shipping out pre-orders on Friday, as my rulebook and Chapter Approved were sat on my porch from UK mail order this morning.
It was packed pretty badly sadly, quite a few bumps and scrapes as a result. GW used to be really good at making sure your stuff didn't get wrecked in transit.

The enhanced codexes on iOS are much better from a user perspective than the straight-to-PDF android books I have.
I’m going to hope against hope that the iOS version is more in line with the AoS app and the just pity the poor android users. The 40k app just aggravates me so much simply because of how good the AoS app is. They did it once so very well, why couldn’t they just do the same thing again? Instead they managed to make it worse while charging more for it.

I may be wrong but I kinda expect both app to be the same, built on a multiplatform engine, like, say, unity, rather than two separate different native apps.

Broadly it's all webviews rather than native, which suggests it will be the same on both.
Having said that, the billing solutions used here would normally get an app rejected from the Apple app store, so we'll see.
It's very hard to imagine the rules data will somehow not have piles of typos and errors in it for the iOS version, same as the Android one.
Hopefully it’s just a case of the app having to prove itself viable before they invest resources into improving it rather than this being the product they intended to release.
There’s a difference between having a hobby and being a narcissist.
Here in the UK the GW shop hasn't updated yet, where normally it would have done so.
Yesterday on FB the WHC team kept mentioning that 'the web team' were working to fix errors in The App as quickly as they could.
We also have Warscroll builder on their website...this increases my suspicion that Warscroll builder was a test-bed of sorts for thirty builder portion of the app.
I love Azyr, despite it's faults, so I was hoping that WH40k The App was going to be Azyr 2.0 with the kinks knocked out and best bits taken from the iOS books plus whatever ideas they stole from other similar products.
On the initial announcement, I had high hopes that the App would be revolutionary for 9th edition. With the move towards more frequent FAQs/rules updates - an app which auto updates makes a lot of sense.
I started to have some concerns when they announced pricing/features...
Now I've downloaded it - imo it is an absolute train wreck. Borderline unusable from a UX perspective. The pricing at the moment is a joke for the available feature set.
I've seen many comments about it needing more time and to be patient, but that is no excuse. The app as it stands should be a free alpha test, with the features marked as WIP. As it stands it would make me feel absolutely awful to have spent money on it.
Clearly someone in management decided the app had to launch on 9th release, but feels months away from an app I would even consider paying a subscription for.

So its already dead?
I mean GW already proved that it is not worth investing something as there are not a lot of downloads and it has a low rating
so how should it proof itself viable now?
It can't, the target audience are already visibly dissapointed, it would need to become both more refined and cheaper to even begin to lure a lot of people back in.
The whole thing is baffling, they claimed to be working on this when 8th launched, we're here 3 years later with an app that honestly feels like its had no QA whatsoever, knocked out from scratch by 2 guys in a shed over a month.

One thing that GW always get praised for is replacing faults. If it is damaged enough, you may be able to get another one. Could get a store delivery if you want to be sure to avoid damage.
Hell, I've known GW managers who would just straight swap a damaged book, no questions, if you go in.
cheaper?
until this thing is actually doing what was promised and adds an advantage over the physical books (for now I am faster to get thru my books to search for units than to browse thru the app, not even talking about that I added references with pencil to my books so I can find stuff in the other books faster) it needs to be free
I would not pay 25 Cents a month for somehting like this and hope that GW maybe improve it later
I mean "just release it we can always fix it later" was their way to go since 4th Edition, with the problem they forget to "fix" stuff on a regular bases because their focus is already on the next product/edition
Harry, bring this ring to Narnia or the Sith will take the Enterprise

Fix some of the UX issues, include the armybuilder, make it cheaper and they have a chance imo.

GW should take notes from Wyrd on making a great app, with lots of smooth in and out of game functionality.
And their app is 100% free. XD
I also find it amusing that GW claims to be a model company first and foremost, but is one of the last mini game companies to hold its game rules behind paywalls.
Saw this floating around on Facebook. Obviously teasers like this often mean very little (or I'd be neck-deep in Noise Marines by now). As a disclaimer, in the 8th edition rulebook there is mention that the Salamanders stop Angron from being summoned to Armageddon:
Spoiler:
Given the nature of the new timeline, this new teaser might simply be the missive that summons the Salamanders to stop Angron from being summoned - which we already know about. That being said, there are some key differences between the two.

Hopefully this will be supported and eventually become something decent...
But again, the AoS app they have out right now is great. All they needed to do was make a 40k version of that.
Good point, I never checked it out. Was it any good a launch though?
IMHOGW has a history of half heartedly jumping into this whole "internet" fad then flipping away. Recent years have been good but there's still an anti technology culture there that makes me dubious about new apps from them.

As far as I can remember the AoS app hasn’t really changed since launch, at least not in any significant way. Here’s my review of it I wrote on a different forum earlier;
Spoiler:
The AoS app is why I had fairly high hopes for the 40k app. It flat out gives you every warscroll in the game for free. Broken down by faction and easily searchable. My sole complaint to the warscrolls are endless spells are crammed in the middle and don’t have a category for you to single out. No points are included in the warscrolls.
To view rules in the app you have to buy the digital rules Thru the app. It’s a completely separate store from their other digital offerings. They are however quite a bit cheaper this way. For example, the physical Seraphon battletome is $40. The pdf on iTunes is $35. The app charges $17. I’m Hoping the 40k app goes with this model, but my expectations are low at this point.
The list builder is a $1 a month subscription. You pay $1 a month and you can build lists for every army, even ones you haven’t purchased books for. You still see all the points, you can still add all the options for everything. You do need to have purchased the book to see what the rules for the stuff are. It has a moderate list validation. It’ll tell you you don’t have enough battleline, or too many elites, or haven’t named who your general is, but if you’ve added a special warscroll battalion, it won’t tell you if you’ve met the requirements for the battalion. It doesn’t have any way to assign who’s actually in that battalion.
My single biggest complaint with the app is it periodically forgets you’ve subscribed to it. Try to use the list builder and it tells you you need to subscribe. Hit subscribe and it tells you you’re already subscribed. Try to use the list builder again and it still tells you you need to subscribe. In the past I could only get past that by deleting the app and redownloading everything. It properly remembers what books you’ve purchased and doesn’t try to charge you again, but it was still a huge hassle and you’ll have lost all the army lists you’d made. HOWEVER I was recently informed it’s Way easier to just go to manage subscriptions and unsubscribe then resubscribe. I have done that once and that indeed fixes it without deleting everything, so now even my biggest complaint has an only mildly annoying work around.
