Yeah the original splitting was even worse but even new one wasn't perfect and this was compounded by AA(see? AA isn't holy grail ) which in turn was compounded with boresight weapons. At worst you had stuff like one omega cruiser vs 2 smaller ships. In theory good nice game. In practice if small ships were split you got one shot with main guns half the time and then you didn't get any until your secondaries took out other(which could be hard. secondaries weren't THAT powerful). And that's assuming smaller ship isn't manouverable enough to stay out of front anyway.

So you needed initiave sinks. A lot. As it is for narn's it was the skirmish level ships that were the king. G'quan was not that good(well the bigger games helps them as the split system did have advantage of favouring bigger ships in bigger games. 5 battle was different to 10 raid despite nominally being "same")

Track That Target order is your friend, makes boresight weapons fore (or aft) arc against nominated target. Also Narn skirmish ships (bar the Thentus) suck, raid is where its at!

It was out of steam at the end, but I loved those massive space battles in the show and especially the Earth battleships with the rotating hulls. Thanks for the heads up on that one.

Link in my sig is to an on going campaign (though not updated in a fair while) if you want to check out how it plays, if you can get hold of the vassal module feel free to hit me up for a game, same name, will happily teach you the basics.

For sure Heroscape, and then I guess the Wizkids Pirates! CSG game. I was too young to fully appreciate Pirates! and too poor to fully appreciate Heroscape. Though I have been putting the terrain to good use recently.

I bought into the ill-fated Hero Quest reboot because I wanted a "lighter" boardgame version of a dungeon crawl for my (at the time...7 year old?) nephew. He's now 13, but could still enjoy that kind of intro game.

I miss the 90's "solid content" of most of their board games.

Thunder Road!!! Got the chance to play that at a Con before the lockdown, and it was as fun as it was 30 -some years ago.

2nd place would be to FASA Star Trek combat simulator. Not for the game, but that they had some great miniature models that are impossible to find.

3rd place would be Epic. I still have a small collection, but would like to have easy and supported access to the models and rules.

I unfortunately have a copy of Sky Galleons. The models are gakmy, brown blobs and would need a serious modern revision (and it would help if they were up scaled). Leviathans is a much, much better quality and rendition of this game.

OMG, Thunder Road is a strong candidate for a reprint. Technically the first "minis" game I played, and much appreciation for my Aunt for buying it for my brother and I back in the late 80s. Loved the continuous-board-swtiching thing it had going on...sigh. Y'know, a few models from Dropzone Commander's reistance range would be swanky stand-ins, and the boards should be easy enough to whip up, leaving just a stand-in for the wreaks....hmmm. I think I might give that a try and do a thread here, when I get some free time.

it might still be in print but robo-rally, i still have my wotc copy but just knowing other gamers were doing the robo-shuffle makes i amused (the movement is card based with forwards and 90 degree turns so players would wiggle in their chairs whilst planning our their turn)

also Dragon (maybe Dungeon) Quest wildly unfair dungeon crawler with a random map and turn limit

People tend to forget that Space Hulk worked well because it involved two asymmetric forces combined with a tightly written ruleset. That was what made it a classic. It started to break down, and even outright suck when you added non Terminator and non Genestaler forces and ranged combat on both sides. Be careful what you wish for. While I agree the game should be available, skip the expansions. They were horrible.

For an oddball request for something I'd like to see come back from GW, how about Battle for Armageddon? People forget that GW did a few 'traditional' wargames in their setting, and BFA was actually a darn good one. I still have my copy, and they did it as print and play, but both were many years ago now.

I loved Armageddon and the nids/iyanden one but could never quite shake the feel they were errm inspired reskins of older North Africa and d-day games

Well, Armageddon did draw its map and most of its campaign details/history from Operation Barbarossa, Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. So by default, it can't help but feel like a WW2 campaign, or Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812, as that is what it was largely based on.

agree totally on the models in Sky Galleons, the game however is amazing, would like the Starline range of models from ADB to be easier to get hold of, I have Star Fleet Battles but without models no one round here will play it

I've got the rules somewhere, with White Line Fever and the other expansion, really just needs the track making and Gaslands models using - would just like a reprint with a reasonable range of models and ideally plastic track sections

would be ideal as a boxed game with a couple of expansions, doesn't need a massive range, especially if they went something like 1:72, you sell the game, the box set, counters, track, the basic cars then have a range of "upgrade packs" for conventional model kits

or just go 40k scale for wacky races

Following up a thought from another thread on Rogue Trader; it would be great if GW released it again but as a game for those not interested in competitive play, but simply as an excuse for some major kitbashing to cover factions that would be too awkward for regular 40K or other games.

Y'know the sort; gang warfare, planetary governers fighting uprisings, Eldar pirates and savages enjoying their unsavory and barbaric hobbies, Inquisitors being their usual charming selves and freighter crews repelling boarders or hunting down that large drooling stowaway...

Lordy, wasn't that back in the Rogue Trader days when they added Eldar, Harlequins, Space Marines and Orks? So they say, anyway...

To be honest, I doubt it would ever get that far with Space Hulk. They seem to chuck out a new print every so years.

You might be thinking of Advanced Space Crusade. I only remember the Death Wing and Genestealer additions. Death Wing was okay (appearance of Lightning Claws, Thunderhammer and the like), but with Genestealer, it went off the rails with the psychic sub game and the various hybrids with weapons.

To be honest Advanced Space Crusade was a complete mystery to me save for owning the "Terminators & Tyranids" set. Something to do with scouts storming a hive ship.

I think I might have seen it in the Space Hulk Bible on the net - maybe it was a fan thing?

Throw in another vote for Epic, though hopefully with a bit less madness. We don't need ork bubble chucker templates and Cheesey Eldar Weapon Phases. more focus on man and tanks, less on crazy oddball weapons.

And of course Space Fleet, for the crazy ship designs.

d6 Star Wars also has a place in my heart.

They did reprint D6 Star Wars, didn’t they?

As far as I’m concerned, that system is the gold standard for RPGs.

The problem with the Genestealer expansion for Space Hulk was the addition of hybrids with big guns, taken from the old Chaos heavy weapon sprue. It turned the game into ‘Fragile hybrid steps out. Marine overwatch usually splatters said hybrid. If by a miracle it should miss or jam, hybrid splatters you with conversion beamer.’ Boring!

The problem with Deathwing was the psychic rules were horribly overpowered, routinely cleansing entire room sections with ease. Game over man, game over. Boring!

And don’t even get me started on the lousy additions from White Dwarf like Space Marines, Orks, etc. Yeah, it was great idea to send in the Imperial Guard to face ‘stealers in close quarters. Such fun when the stealers roll 3D6 in close combat and you were rolling 1D6-3... made for a lot of tense moments...Not!

In short, pretty much everything Space Hulk other than the base game and extra Terminator v. Genestealer missions and campaigns were poorly thought out and executed.

Hmm for me I don't really want to see "reprint" but rather "remakes" because for the games I want to see back there have been such strides in the market and technology that I wouldn't really want whole armies of the old models.

1) Epic+Titan Legions - we are slowly getting there, I can see it happening but not for some years. Even if we don't get there I really hope to see Xenos titans in Adepticus Titanicus.

Same for me!

But if nothing else, I'll be happy to continue playing Space Marine/Titan Legions using the new Titans - IF they eventually release new correctly scaled Xenos Phantoms, Warlocks and Gargants!

4) Rackhiem - I really like the model designs and style that they had going with that game. It's a huge shame its basically been a dead duck for a long while and it seems the company that currently holds it can't even run a company without failing (SD seems to have a lot of directors of other failed sister companies.....).

I'd also LOVE to see Confrontation return - for real, legitimately, sustainably, with the same art direction and miniature sculpting style from the 3.0/3.5 days...

Non-GW: Star Wars: Epic Duels.
GW: Battlefleet: Gothic. Seriously with a videogame and the chance for a whole other scale I have no idea why we got Aeronautica (which was never that popular) instead of BF:G, which was.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

Battlefleet Gothic has a surprisingly lively fanbase. While the minis are out of print, they’re not exactly out of...printing. It’s going to be really weird when GW brings it back only to charge $30 a cruiser and find out half the market is already glutted with ships that cost a fraction of that.

I'm pretty sure that's the reason. The old plastic cruisers were awesome kits and I'd be happy to pick them up if they went back in print. But the fact is everything in the BFG library has a free STL file these days. Not everyone can or wants to print a fleet, but they're out there.

I imagine that's the reason for the rumored Battle Fleet Heresy game.

Honestly unless SD goes belly up (and actually belly up not just shifting to another firm...) and sells it on I think Rackhiem is dead. Even if they've good faith they just seem incompetent.

I'd say best bet is to look at Signum. It's got the same art and sculpting style

https://signumgames.com

The only black spot against it is that its made by recasters who had been making Rackhiem for years since it went out of print (though they did pull sales when SD started selling it again - for the most part). It's one of those rare cases where a recaster is actually putting back into the hobby and business wise they seem far more trustworthy than SD.

It’s a shame. If they came out with plastic cruisers now, or better for them a year and a half ago when Dropfleet was at its lowest, hey could have captured that market instead of losing it near permanently. Heck, if they just priced their cruisers reasonably (like $15 or maybe $20 for a fully loaded cruiser sprue, twice the price of BFG 1st edition plastics), I bet they still could. If they come out swinging with the kinds of prices I expect, they.’ll just kill their brand even faster.

For comparison, Dropfleet Commander had a resurgence when Battle for Earth came out and still has momentum. Their plastic kits come to roughly $15 per cruiser before discounts—but each cruiser sprue comes with a ton of optional bits. People make whole battlegroups of lighter craft from the leftover bits in a starter set. The value is there in the plastic kits. The only 3D printed Dropfleet things I’ve seen were base inserts, sector tokens, that kind of thing.
